Claims
- 1. An olefin polymerisation process wherein at least one olefin is contacted, under polymerisation condition, with a polymerisation catalyst comprising:
- (I) a transition metal composition; and
- (II) an organic compound of aluminum or of a metal of Group IIA of the Periodic Table or a complex of an organic compound of Group IA or Group IIA of the Periodic Table with an organic aluminum compound wherein the transition metal composition which is component (I) of the polymerisation catalyst is the product obtained by forming a suspension from an inert liquid medium which is an aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon and particles of at least one solid material, wherein the suspension contains a compound of a transition metal of Group IVA to VIA of the Periodic Table which compound is either dissolved in the inert liquid medium or is present as a solid material suspended in the inert liquid medium, spray-drying the suspension and collecting a spray-dried solid material having a particle size in the range 20 up to 100 microns.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein component I of the catalyst is the product obtained by using a titanium halide as the compound of a transition metal of Group IVA to VIA of the Periodic Table.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein component I of the catalyst is the product obtained by suspending particles of the solid material in a solution of titanium tetrachloride dissolved in the aliphatic aromatic, or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein propylene is polymerised using a catalyst which also includes a Lewis Base compound.
- 5. An olefin polymerisation process wherein at least one olefin monomer is contacted, under polymerisation conditions with a polymerisation catalyst comprising:
- (I) a transition metal composition; and
- (II) an organic compound of aluminum or of a metal of Group IIA of the Periodic Table or a complex of an organic compound of Group IA or Group IIA of the Periodic Table with an organic aluminum compound wherein the transition metal composition which is component I of the polymerisation catalyst is the product obtained by forming a suspension from an inert liquid medium and particles of at least one solid material wherein the solid material is, or contains, a titanium halide selected from the group consisting of titanium trichloride, a solid titanium trichloride-containing material and a product of contacting titanium tetrachloride with a support which is silica, alumina, magnesia, a mixture of complex of two or more thereof, or magnesium chloride, spray-drying the suspension and collecting a spray-dried solid material having a particle size in the range from 20 up to 100 microns.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein ethylene or propylene is polymerised or copolymerised in the gas phase in the essential absence of a liquid phase.
- 7. The process of claim 5 wherein propylene is polymerised using a catalyst which also includes a Lewis Base compound.
- 8. The process of claim 5 wherein component (I) of the polymerisation catalyst is the product obtained by suspending particles of the solid material in an inert liquid medium which is an aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon.
- 9. The process of claim 5 wherein component (I) of the polymerisation catalyst is the product obtained by forming a suspension which contains a Lewis Base compound which is an ether, an ester, an organic phosphorous compound or a sulphur-containing organic compound.
- 10. The process of claim 9 wherein component (I) of the polymerisation catalyst is the product obtained by using as the solid material the product of grinding titanium trichloride or a solid titanium trichloride-containing material in the presence of the Lewis Base compound.
- 11. The process of claim 5 wherein propylene is homopoymerised or is sequentially copolymerised with ethylene.
- 12. An olefin polymerisation process wherein at least one olefin monomer is contacted, under polymerisation conditions, with a catalyst which is active for the stereospecific homopolymerisation of propylene and which comprises:
- (I) a transition metal composition; and
- (II) an organic compound of aluminium or of a metal of Group IIA of the Periodic Table or a complex of an organic compound of a metal of Group IA or Group IIA of the Periodic Table with an organic aluminium compound wherein the transition metal composition which is component I of the polymerisation catalyst is the product obtained by forming a suspension from an inert liquid medium and particles of at least one solid material wherein the solid material is, or contains, a titanium halide selected from the group consisting of titanium trichloride, a solid titanium trichloride-containing material and a product of contacting titanium tetrachloride with a support which is silica, alumina, magnesia, a mixture or complex of two or more thereof, or magnesium chloride, spray-drying the suspension and collecting a spray-dried solid material having a particle size in the range from 20 up to 100 microns.
- 13. An olefin polymerisation process wherein at least one olefin monomer is contacted, under polymerisation conditions, with a catalyst which is active for the stereospecific homopolymerisation of propylene and which comprises:
- (I) a transition metal composition; and
- (II) an organic compound of aluminium or of a metal of Group IIA of the Periodic Table or a complex of an organic compound of a metal of Group IA or Group IIA of the Periodic Table with an organic aluminum compound, wherein the transition metal composition which is component I of the polymerisation catalyst is the product obtained by forming a suspension from an inert liquid medium which is an aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon and particles of at least one solid material, wherein the solid material is, or contains, a titanium trichloride, a solid titanium trichloride-containing material and a product of contacting titanium tetrachloride with a support which is silica, alumina, magnesia, a mixture or complex of two or more thereof, or magnesium chloride, spray-drying the suspension and collecting a spray-dried solid material having a particle size in the range from 20 up to 100 microns.
- 14. An olefin polymerisation process wherein at least one olefin monomer is contacted, under polymerisation conditions, with a catalyst which is active for the stereospecific holmpolymerisation of propylene and which comprises:
- (I) a transition metal composition; and
- (II) an organic compound of aluminum or of a metal of Group IIA of the Periodic Table or a complex of an organic compound of a metal of Group IA or Group IIA of the Periodic Table with an organic aluminum compound wherein the transition metal composition which is component I of the polymerisation catalyst is the product obtained by forming a suspension from an inert liquid medium which is an aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon and particles of at least one solid material wherein the suspension contains a compound of a transition metal of Group IVA to VIA of the Periodic Table which compound is either dissolved in the inert liquid medium or is present as a solid material suspended in the inert liquid medium, spray-drying the suspension and collecting a spray-dried solid material having a particle size in the range from 20 up to 100 microns.
- 15. A process for the production of an olefin polymer which comprises the steps of
- (A) forming a suspension form an inert liquid medium and particles of at least one solid material wherein the solid material is, or contains, a titanium halide selected from the group consisting of titanium trichloride, a solid titanium trichloride-containing material and a product of contacting titanium tetrachloride with a support which is silica, alumina, magnesia, a mixture or complex of two or more thereof, or magnesium chloride;
- (B) spray-drying the suspension and collecting a spray-dried solid material;
- (C) mixing the spray-dried solid material with an organic compound of a metal which is an organic compound of aluminium, or of a metal of Group IIA of the Periodic Table, or is a complex of an organic compound of a metal of Group IA or Group IIA of the Periodic Table with an organic aluminium compound; and
- (D) contacting at least one olefin monomer with the mixture of (C) under polymerisation conditions and separating an olefin polymer.
- 16. A process for the production of an olefin polymer which comprises the steps of
- (A) forming a suspension from an inert liquid medium which is an aliphatic, aromatic, or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon and particles of at least one solid material, wherein the suspension contains a compound of a transition metal of Group IVA to VIA of the Periodic Table which compound is either dissolved in the inert liquid medium or is present as a solid material suspended in the inert liquid medium;
- (B) spray-drying the suspension and collecting a spray-dried solid material;
- (C) mixing the spray-dried solid material with an organic compound of a metal which is an organic compound of aluminium or of a metal of Group IIA of the Periodic Table, or is a complex of an organic compound of a metal of Group IA or Group IIA of the Periodic Table with an organic aluminium compound; and.
- (D) contacting at least one olefin monomer with the mixture of (C) under polymerisation conditions and separating an olefin polymer.
- 17. An olefin polymerisation process wherein at least one olefin monomer is contacted, under polymerisation conditions, with a catalyst which is active for the stereospecific homopolymerisation of propylene and which comprises:
- (I) a transition metal composition; and
- (II) an organic compound of aluminum or of a metal of Group IIA of the Periodic Table or a complex of an organic compound of a metal of Group IA of Group IIA of the Periodic Table with an organic aluminum compound, wherein the transition metal composition which is component I of the polymerisation catalyst is the product obtained by forming a suspension consisting essentially of an inert liquid medium which is an aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon and particles of at least one solid material, wherein the solid material is, or contains, a titanium trichloride, a solid titanium trichloride-containing material and a product of contacting titanium tetrachloride with a support which is silica, alumina, magnesia, a mixture or complex of two or more thereof, or magnesium chloride, spray-drying the suspension and collecting a spray-dried solid material.
- 18. An olefin polymerisation process wherein at least one olefin monomer is contacted, under polymerisation conditions, with a catalyst which is active for the stereospecific homopolymerisation propylene and which comprises:
- (I) a transition metal composition; and
- (II) an organic compound of aluminum or of a metal of Group IIA of the Periodic Table or a complex of an organic compound of a metal of Group IA or Group IIA of the Periodic Table with an organic aluminum compound wherein the transition metal composition which is component I of the polymerisation catalyst is the product obtained by forming a suspension consisting essentially of an inert liquid medium which is an aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon and particles of at least one solid material wherein the suspension contains a compound of a transition metal of Group IVA to VIA of the Periodic Table which compound is either dissolved in the inert liquid medium or is present as a solid material suspended in the inert liquid medium, spray-drying the the suspension and collecting a spray-dried solid spray material.
