Claims
- 1. A digital telecommunication apparatus comprising:
a first port configured to be coupled to a digital communication network; a second port configured to be coupled to a time division multiplexed (TDM) digitized voice communication link; a third port configured to be coupled with a cell-based communication path, over which cell-based digital communications are conducted with a host processor; and a multi-protocol communication interface coupled to said first, second and third ports, and being operative
to interface digital communication signal traffic received at said first port and TDM digitized voice signal traffic received at said second port, as cell-based digital communication signals for application to said third port and transport therefrom over said cell-based communication path to said host processor, and to interface each of cell-based digital communication signal traffic and cell-based digitized voice communication signals, received at said third port from said host processor via said cell-based communication path, and destined for delivery to a communication circuit served by said digital communication network, as digitized communication signals for application from said first port to said digital communication network.
- 2. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said cell-based communication path comprises a Universal Test and Operations Physical (PHY) Interface for a synchronous transfer mode (ATM) (UTOPIA) communication path.
- 3. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said multi-protocol communication interface is configured to interface each of ATM cell-packetized voice signals and ATM cell-packetized data signals.
- 4. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said multi-protocol communication interface further includes a TDM voice communication link-to-digital communication network transport path, which is operative to interface TDM digitized voice signals, received at said second port from said TDM digitized voice communication link and destined for delivery to a voice communication circuit served by said digital communication network, with said third port and transport therefrom over said cell-based communication path as cell-based digitized voice signals to said host processor, and to interface cell-based digitized voice signals, supplied to said third port over said cell-based communication path from said host processor and destined for delivery to said voice communication circuit served by said digital communication network, as digitized communication signals for application from said first port and transport via said digital communication network to said voice communication circuit.
- 5. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said TDM voice communication link-to-digital communication network transport path includes
a TDM voice communication link input path, coupled between said second and third ports, and being operative to interface TDM digitized voice signals received at said second port as said cell-based digitized voice signals for transport from said third port over said cell-based communication path to said host processor, and a digital communication network output path, coupled between said third and first ports, and being operative to interface cell-based digitized voice signals and digital data traffic, as supplied to said third port via said cell-based communication path from said host processor, as digitized communication signals for application from said first port to said digital communication network.
- 6. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said digital communication network output path comprises
a dual cell-based communication path coupled to said third port, and having a cell-based digitized voice signal path portion and a cell-based digital data portion, a digitized voice signal serial output buffer coupled to said cell-based digitized voice signal path portion, a digital signal serial output buffer coupled to said cell-based digital data portion, and a cell-based transmitter, which is operative to transmit cell-based digital communication signals via said first port to said digital communication network in accordance with contents of said digitized voice signal serial output buffer and said digital signal serial output buffer.
- 7. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said multi-protocol communication interface further includes a digital communication network-to-TDM voice communication link transport path, which is operative to interface digitized voice signals, received at said first port from said digital communication network and destined for delivery to a voice signaling circuit served by said TDM voice communication link, with said third port and transport therefrom as cell-based digitized voice signals over said cell-based communication path to said host processor, and to interface cell-based digitized voice signals, supplied to said third port over said cell-based communication path from said host processor and destined for delivery to said voice signaling circuit served by said TDM voice communication link, as TDM digitized voice signals for application from said second port and transport via said TDM voice communication link to said voice signaling circuit.
- 8. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 7, wherein said multi-protocol communication interface includes a full duplex digitized voice signal playout buffer unit coupled with each of said TDM voice communication link-to-digital communication network transport path and said digital communication network-to-TDM voice communication link transport path.
- 9. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said multi-protocol communication interface further includes a digital communication network-to-TDM voice communication link transport path, which is operative to interface digitized voice signals, received at said first port from said digital communication network and destined for delivery to a voice signaling circuit served by said TDM voice communication link, with said third port and transport therefrom as cell-based digitized voice signals over said cell-based communication path to said host processor, and to interface cell-based digitized voice signals, supplied to said third port over said cell-based communication path from said host processor and destined for delivery to said voice signaling circuit served by said TDM voice communication link, as TDM digitized voice signals for application from said second port and transport via said TDM voice communication link to said voice signaling circuit.
- 10. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 9, wherein said digital communication network-to-TDM voice communication link transport path includes
a digital communication network input path, coupled between said first and third ports, and being operative to interface digitized communication signals from said digital communication network as cell-based digitized voice signals and data traffic supplied to said third port for transport therefrom via said cell-based communication path to said host processor, and a TDM voice communication link output path, coupled between said third and second ports, and being operative to extract, from cell-based digitized voice signals received at said third port from said host processor, TDM digitized voice signals for application to said TDM voice communication link via said second port.
- 11. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said digital communication network input path includes
a dual cell-based communication path coupled to said third port, and having a cell-based digitized voice signal path portion and cell-based digital data portion of said dual cell-based communication path, a digitized signal serial input buffer coupled to said cell-based digitized voice signal path portion of said dual cell-based communication path, a cell-based receiver, which is operative to receive cell-based digital communication signals via said first port from said digital communication network, and to couple said cell-based digital communication signals to said digitized signal serial input buffer, and a cell routing mechanism which is operative to selectively route cell-based digitized voice signals and data traffic in said digitized signal serial input buffer to said cell-based digitized voice signal path portion and cell-based digital data portion of said dual cell-based communication path for transport via said third port and said cell-based communication path to said host processor.
- 12. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 11, further including a digital communication network-host processor transport path, which comprises
a digital signal serial output buffer coupled to said cell-based digital data portion of said dual cell-based communication path, and a frame protocol-based transceiver, which is operative to receive frame protocol-based digital communication signals via said first port from said digital communication network, and to couple said frame protocol-based digital communication signals to said digitized signal serial input buffer, and to transmit frame protocol-based digital communication signals via said first port to said digital communication network in accordance with contents of said digital signal serial output buffer.
- 13. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 1, further including a fourth port, configured to be coupled with an auxiliary digital communication path over which non cell-based digital communications are conducted with an auxiliary digital communication device, and wherein said multi-protocol communication interface further includes an auxiliary digital signal transport path, which is operative to interface auxiliary digital communication signals, received at said fourth port from said auxiliary 10 digital communication path, with said third port and transport as cell-based auxiliary digital communication signals over said cell-based communication path to said host processor, and to interface cell-based auxiliary digital communication signals, supplied to said third port over said is cell-based communication path from said host processor and destined for delivery to said auxiliary digital communication device, as non cell-based auxiliary digital communication signals for application from said fourth port to said auxiliary digital communication path.
- 14. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said multi-protocol communication interface includes a digital communication network-host processor transport path, which is operative to interface different types of digital communication signals, received at said first port from said digital communication network and having different communication protocols, with said third port and transport therefrom as cell-based communication signals over said cell-based communication path to said host processor, and to interface cell-based digital communication signals, supplied to said third port over said cell-based communication path from said host processor, as network-directed digitized communication signals having one of said different communication protocols for application from said first port to said digital communication network.
- 15. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 14, wherein said different types of digital communication signals include cell-based digital communication signals and frame protocol-based digital communication signals.
- 16. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said cell-based digital communication signals comprise a synchronous transfer mode (ATM) signals and said frame protocol-based digital communication signals comprise high level data link control (HDLC) signals.
- 17. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said multi-protocol communication interface includes a digital cross connect unit that is controllably operative to interface TDM communication signals between said first and second ports, exclusive of said cell-based communication path.
- 18. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 1, further including an echo cancellation and voice compression mechanism coupled in a digitized voice signal path between said second port and said cell-based communication path.
- 19. A digital telecommunication apparatus comprising:
a host network processor configured to be coupled to data terminal equipment; and a multi-protocol communication interface, which is operative to execute diverse types of digital communication signaling interface functions with a plurality of communication ports, under the control of supervisory control signals supplied by said host network processor, said plurality of communication ports including a first port configured to interface ATM cell-based voice and data traffic with a digital communication network, a second port configured to interface TDM voice communication signals with a time division multiplexed (TDM) digitized voice communication link, and a third port configured to be coupled with a dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path over which ATM cell-based communications containing communication signals interfaced at said first and second ports are conducted between said multi-protocol communication interface and said host network processor.
- 20. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 19, wherein said multi-protocol communication interface includes a bidirectional digital cross-connect switch coupled to said second port, and providing TDM voice signaling connectivity between said second port and an internal TDM bus, said internal TDM bus being coupled with said dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path in such a manner as to interface TDM voice signals at said second port as ATM cell-based voice communications over said dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path with said host network processor.
- 21. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 20, wherein said bidirectional digital cross-connect switch is further coupled to said first port, and wherein said multi-protocol communication interface is configured to interface ATM cell-based voice communications received over said dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path from said host network processor through said bidirectional digital cross-connect switch with said first port for application to said digital communication network.
- 22. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 20, wherein said internal TDM bus is coupled with a voice gateway having a first, TDM legacy port for providing access to a TDM voice legacy circuit, and having a second, TDM throughput port coupled with a full duplex digitized voice signal playout buffer unit that is operative to interface TDM voice signals transported by said internal TDM bus as ATM-cell based voice communications over said dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path with said host network processor.
- 23. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 22, wherein said full duplex digitized voice signal playout buffer unit contains a plurality of full duplex digitized voice signal playout buffers respectively associated with a plurality of voice channels served by said digital telecommunication apparatus, and wherein a respective voice signal playout buffer has a length less than twice the length of an ATM cell.
- 24. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 20, wherein an echo canceler and ADPCM voice compression operator are coupled in cascade within said internal TDM bus.
- 25. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 20, further including a plurality of dual tone multifrequency (DTMF) detectors coupled with said internal TDM bus.
- 26. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 19, wherein said dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path has a signal transport rate an order of magnitude greater than that of said digital communication network.
- 27. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 19, wherein said dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path contains a first PHY portion used exclusively for the transport of digital data and a second PHY portion used exclusively for the transport of digitized voice signals.
- 28. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 27, wherein said multi-protocol communication interface includes
a digital signal serial output buffer coupled to said first PHY portion of said dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path, and a digitized voice signal serial output buffer coupled to said second PHY portion of said dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path, and a cell-based transmitter, which is operative to transmit ATM cell-based digital communication signals via said first port to said digital communication network in accordance with contents of said digitized voice signal serial output buffer and said digital signal serial output buffer, with priority of transmission given to digitized voice signals buffered in said serial output buffer.
- 29. The digital telecommunication apparatus according to claim 19, wherein said multi-protocol communication interface includes a fourth port, configured to be coupled with an auxiliary digital communication path over which non cell-based digital communications are conducted with an auxiliary digital communication device, and wherein said multi-protocol communication interface further includes an auxiliary digital signal transport path, which is operative to interface auxiliary digital communication signals, received at said fourth port from said auxiliary digital communication path, with said third port and transport as ATM cell-based auxiliary digital communication signals over said dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path to said host processor, and to interface cell-based auxiliary digital communication signals, supplied to said third port over said dual PHY ATM cell-based communication path from said host processor and destined for delivery to said auxiliary digital communication device, as non cell-based auxiliary digital communication signals for application from said fourth port to said auxiliary digital communication path.
