Claims
- 1. A dual porosity tube made by a method comprising the steps of:
- a. concentrically joining a first preformed tubular billet and a second preformed tubular billet each of the first and second preformed tubular billets comprising;
- i. PTFE resin particles having an average particle size greater than or equal to 355 .mu.; and
- ii. a lubricant, the first and second tubular billets having predetermined lube levels in the range of 50 to 150 grams of lubricant to 500 grams PTFE resin and different from one and other;
- b. co-extruding the first and second preformed tubular billets to meld the inner and outer billets into a composite tubular extrudate having an inner surface with a first porosity and an outer surface with a second porosity different from the first porosity;
- c. longitudinally expanding the extrudate; and
- d. sintering the extrudate.
- 2. The dual porosity tube of claim 1, wherein the lube level in the first billet is less than the lube level in the second billet.
- 3. The dual porosity tube of claim 2, wherein the lube level in the first billet is less than or equal to about 80 and the lube level in the second billet is greater than or equal to about 120.
- 4. The dual porosity tube of claim 1, wherein the dual porosity tube has a microstructure having internodal distances at inner and outer surfaces of the dual porosity PTFE tube within a range of about 0.10-200 .mu..
- 5. The dual porosity tube of claim 1, wherein the average particle size of the PTFE resin of the first billet and the average particle size of the PTFE resin of the second billet are different.
- 6. The dual porosity tube of claim 5, wherein the average particle size of the PTFE resin in the first billet is less than or equal to about 200 .mu..
- 7. The dual porosity tube of claim 6, wherein the average particle size of the PTFE resin in the second billet is greater than or equal to about 700 .mu..
- 8. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 1, wherein the first tubular billet is an inner billet and the second tubular billet is an outer billet.
- 9. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 1, wherein the first tubular billet is an outer billet and the second tubular billet is an inner billet.
- 10. A dual porosity tube made using a method comprising the steps of:
- a. forming a first preformed tubular billet of PTFE resin particles and a lubricant, the lubricant being present at 10 to 30 weight percent of the PTFE resin;
- b. forming a second preformed tubular billet of PTFE resin particles and a lubricant, the lubricant being present at 10 to 30 weight percent of the PTFE resin and different from that of the first preformed tubular billet;
- c. concentrically joining the first preformed billet and the second preformed billet to form a co-extrusion billet;
- d. extruding the co-extrusion billet to meld the first and second preformed tubular billets into a composite tubular extrudate;
- e. longitudinally expanding the extrudate to create a porous PTFE microstructure in which an inner surface of the longitudinally expanded PTFE tubular extrudate has a first average internodal distance within the range of about 8 to 60 .mu.m, and an outer surface of the longitudinally expanded PTFE tubular extrudate has a second average internodal distance within the range of about 16 to 68 .mu.m and is different from the first average internodal distance; and
- f. sintering the extrudate.
- 11. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 10, wherein the first tubular billet is an inner billet and the second tubular billet is an outer billet.
- 12. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 10, wherein the first tubular billet is an outer billet and the second tubular billet is an inner billet.
- 13. A dual porosity PTFE tube made in accordance with the method comprising the steps of:
- a. preforming a first preformed compressed tubular billet comprised of an admixture of PTFE resin particles and lubricant, the lubricant being present at a ratio in the range of 50 to 150 grams of lubricant to 500 grams PTFE resin;
- b. preforming a second preformed compressed tubular billet comprised of an admixture of PTFE resin particles and lubricant, the lubricant being present at a ratio in the range of 50 to 150 grams of lubricant to 500 grams PTFE resin and at a value different from that of the first preformed compressed tubular billet;
- c. concentrically joining the first preformed compressed tubular billet within the second preformed compressed tubular billet a first preformed tubular billet and a second preformed tubular billet to form a co-extrusion billet;
- d. extruding the co-extrusion billet through an extrusion barrel and die and about an extrusion mandrel to meld the first and second preformed tubular billets into a composite tubular extrudate having an inner surface with a first average internodal distance within the range of about 8 to 60 .mu.m, and an outer surface with a second average internodal distance within the range of about 16 to 68 .mu.m and is different from the first average internodal distance;
- e. longitudinally expanding the extrudate; and
- f. sintering the extrudate.
- 14. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 13, wherein the extruding step further comprises the step of heating the extrusion mandrel.
- 15. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 13, wherein the extruding step further comprises the step of forwardly positioning the extrusion mandrel within a tapered region of the extrusion die thereby narrowing an extrusion passageway between the extrusion mandrel and the die.
- 16. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 15, wherein the extruding step further comprises the step of heating the extrusion mandrel.
- 17. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 16, wherein the extruding step further comprises varying an extrusion rate in the range of about 2.5 to about 5.1 cm/sec.
- 18. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 16, wherein the step of heating the extrusion mandrel further comprises the step of heating the extrusion mandrel to within the range of about 25 to 200.degree. C.
- 19. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 13, wherein the extruding step further comprises the step of varying an extrusion rate in the range of about 7.5 to 15.5 cm/sec.
- 20. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 13, wherein the first tubular billet is an inner billet and the second tubular billet is an outer billet.
- 21. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 13, wherein the first tubular billet is an outer billet and the second tubular billet is an inner billet.
- 22. A dual porosity tube made by a method comprising the steps of:
- a. forming a first preformed tubular billet of PTFE resin particles and a lubricant, the lubricant being present at 10 to 30 weight percent of the PTFE resin;
- b. forming a second preformed tubular billet of PTFE resin particles and a lubricant, the lubricant being present at 10 to 30 weight percent of the PTFE resin and different from that of the first preformed tubular billet;
- c. concentrically joining the first preformed tubular billet and the second preformed tubular billet to form a co-extrusion billet;
- d. extruding the co-extrusion billet to meld the first and second preformed tubular billets into a composite tubular extrudate;
- e. longitudinally expanding the extrudate to create a porous PTFE microstructure in which an inner surface of the longitudinally expanded PTFE tubular extrudate has a first average internodal distance within the range of about 8 to 60 .mu.m, and an outer surface of the longitudinally expanded PTFE tubular extrudate has a second average internodal distance within the range of about 16 to 68 .mu.m and is different from the first average internodal distance; and
- f. sintering the extrudate wherein the step of longitudinally expanding the extrudate further comprises the steps of:
- i. inserting an expansion plug into each of two opposing ends of the tubular extrudate;
- ii. concentrically engaging a deformable band about each of the two opposing open ends of the tubular extrudate and the inserted expansion plug; and
- iii. deforming the deformable band about the inserted expansion plug and the tubular extrudate at each of the two opposing open ends of the tubular extrudate, thereby creating an interference fit between the deformable band and the expansion plug to retain each opposing open ends of the tubular extrudate there between.
- 23. The dual porosity PTFE tube as in claim 22, wherein the step of inserting an expansion plug further comprises the step of providing a plurality of expansion plugs each having an annular recess.
- 24. A dual porosity PTFE tube, consisting essentially of:
- a first bias layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene characterized by a node-fibril microporous microstructure and having a first average internodal distance within the range of about 8 to 60 .mu.; and
- a second bias layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene characterized by a node-fibril microstructure and having a second average internodal distance within the range of about 16 to 68 .mu. and which is different from the first average internodal distance of the first bias layer, the second bias layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene being concentrically joined to and in intimate contact with the first bias layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene.
- 25. A dual porosity tube made by a method comprising the steps of:
- a. concentrically joining a first preformed tubular billet and a second preformed tubular billet, the first preformed tubular billet comprising PTFE resin particles having an average particle size less than or equal to about 200 .mu. and a lubricant, and the second preformed tubular billet comprising PTFE resin particles having an average particle size greater than or equal to about 700 .mu. and a lubricant, the lubricant being present in the first and second tubular billets at a concentration within the range of about 50 to 150 grams of lubricant to 500 grams PTFE resin and different within the first tubular billet than the second tubular billet;
- b. co-extruding the separately preformed compressed inner and outer billets to meld the inner and outer billets into a composite tubular extrudate having an inner surface with a first porosity and an outer surface with a second porosity different from the first porosity;
- c. longitudinally expanding the extrudate; and
- d. sintering the extrudate.
