Claims
- 1. A brake booster and master cylinder assembly comprising:
- a first differential pressure powered booster section having a first control valve for controlling differential pressures therein;
- a second differential pressure powered booster section in operative series with said first differential pressure powered booster section and having a second control valve for controlling differential pressures therein;
- a master cylinder section in operative series with said booster sections to be actuated thereby;
- and manual force input means controlling the actuation of said booster sections by operation of said control valves and providing for manual actuation of said master cylinder section;
- each of said booster sections being power operable to actuate said master cylinder section independently of power operation of the other, with one of said booster sections being conditioned for power operation by operation of its control valve by said manual force input means in sequence with and subsequently to the conditioning for full range of power operation of the other of said booster sections by operation of its control valve by said manual force input means to actuate said master cylinder section, said first differential pressure powered booster section normally being actuated up to its full range of power operation to actuate said master cylinder section without operation of said second control valve and said second differential pressure powered second control valve then being operated to actuate said second differential pressure powered booster section to further actuate said master cylinder section, said manual force input means manually operating said master cylinder section only after both of said booster sections have been conditioned for power operation.
- 2. A brake booster and master cylinder assembly comprising:
- a differential air pressure powered booster section;
- a hydraulic pressure powered booster section in operative series therewith;
- a master cylinder section in operative series with said booster sections to be operated thereby;
- and manual force input means controlling the actuation of said booster sections and providing for manual operation of said master cylinder section;
- each of said booster sections being power operable to actuate said master cylinder section independently of power operation of the other, with one of said booster sections being conditioned for its full range of power operation of said master cylinder section by said manual force input means in sequence with and subsequently to the conditioning for the full range of power operation of the other of said booster sections by said manual force input means for actuation of said master cylinder section, said manual force input means manually operating said master cylinder section only after both of said booster sections have been conditioned for their full ranges of power operation of said master cylinder section.
- 3. A brake booster assembly comprising:
- a manual input member selectively subjected to manual force for assembly operation;
- an assembly output member for actuating a brake system during assembly operation;
- a first power booster connected with said input member;
- a second power booster connected with said output member;
- and means connecting said first and second power boosters in sequentially actuatable alignment and operable upon and with actuating movement of said input member to transmit manual force and power boost force from said first power booster through said second power booster to said output member without actuation of said second power booster and acting upon and after power runout of said first power booster to actuate said second power booster to further power said output member;
- said output member being responsive to and moving in accordance with movements of said input member.
- 4. A brake booster and master cylinder assembly comprising in series a manually actuated input member, a first booster section powered by a first differential pressure and controlled by a first control valve actuated by said input member, a second booster section powered by a second differential pressure independent of said first differential pressure and controlled by a second control valve operatively actuated by said input member, and a master cylinder;
- said assembly having means therein transmitting master cylinder actuating forces from said input member and said booster sections to said master cylinder in accordance with manual forces applied to said input member and the power available to each of said booster sections;
- said first booster section first control valve being first actuated by movement of said input member, said first booster section then acting to actuate said master cylinder without actuation of said second booster section and to the extent that power is available to power said first booster section;
- said second booster section control valve being actuated by additional movement of said input member, said second booster section subsequently acting to actuate said master cylinder when more master cylinder actuating force is required than that which can be generated by said first booster section;
- and additional manual force applied by said input member subsequently acting through said force transmitting means to actuate said master cylinder when more master cylinder force is required than that which can be generated by said booster sections.
