Claims
- 1. A hopper for holding granular material for transport in and for dumping from a dual use, belly-dumping and end-dumping vehicle, said hopper comprising:
- (a) angled side walls and end walls defining a top opening and a bottom opening;
- (b) a first pair of spaced apart pivot points attached to at least one of said end walls, each pivot point spaced apart in opposite directions from a center line of said hopper a predetermined distance which is less than one-half of the distance between the center line and each respective side wall;
- (c) a pair of actuator arms pivotably connected to said pair of pivot points;
- (d) a pair of hopper bay doors, connected to said pair of actuator arms and having an inwardly pivoted closed position at which said hopper bay doors cover said bottom opening and an outwardly pivoted open position at which said hopper doors pivot in opposite directions from each other to uncover at least part of said bottom opening and each bay door having a curved interior surface with a radius of curvature approximately equal to the distance from the bottom opening to said pivot points, so that an imaginary vertical line from said pivot points to said hopper doors intersects the interior door surface at a point which is closer to the center line than to the side walls at the bottom hopper opening, thereby causing a greater proportion of the granular material in said hopper to act by the force of gravity to pivot each door inwardly to a closed position;
- (e) a hydraulic actuating cylinder, attached between said actuator arms, and operatively connected to a controllable hydraulic pressure supply to selectably move said hopper bay doors between said inward closed position and said outward open position;
- (f) further comprising a timing mechanism interconnecting between said pair of actuator arms by which each of said actuator arms is actuated an equal distance as each other actuator arm of said pair, but in opposite directions, upon actuation of said actuating cylinder, wherein said timing mechanism comprises:
- (i) a first control arm, rigidly attached to one of said actuator arms and having a predetermined length between the pivot and a first connector point, which first connector point is positioned below said pivot point of said actuator arm;
- (ii) a second control arm, rigidly connected to said other actuator arm, having a second connector point at a distance from said pivot point of said actuating arm which is equal to said predetermined length of said first control arm, and said second connector point being positioned above said pivot point; and
- (iii) a rigid free floating connector rod, connecting to said first connector point of said first control arm and connecting to said second connector point of said second control arm, thereby causing said actuator arms to move in a fixed relationship relative to each other upon actuation of said actuating cylinder.
- 2. A hopper for holding granular material for transport in and for dumping from a dual use, belly-dumping and end-dumping vehicle, said hopper comprising:
- (a) angled side walls and end walls defining a top opening and a bottom opening;
- (b) a first pair of spaced apart pivot points attached to at least one of said end walls, each pivot point spaced apart in opposite directions from a center line of said hopper a predetermined distance which is less than one-half of the distance between the center line and each respective side wall;
- (c) a pair of actuator arms pivotably connected to said pair of pivot points;
- (d) a pair of hopper bay doors, connected to said pair of actuator arms and having an inwardly pivoted closed position at which said hopper bay doors cover said bottom opening and an outwardly pivoted open position at which said hopper doors pivot in opposite directions from each other to uncover at least part of said bottom opening and each bay door having a curved interior surface with a radius of curvature approximately equal to the distance from the bottom opening to said pivot points, so that an imaginary vertical line from said pivot points to said hopper doors intersects the interior door surface at a point which is closer to the center line than to the side walls at the bottom hopper opening, thereby causing a greater proportion of the granular material in said hopper to act by the force of gravity to pivot each door inwardly to a closed position;
- (e) a hydraulic actuating cylinder, attached between said actuator arms, and operatively connected to a controllable hydraulic pressure supply to selectably move said hopper bay doors between said inward closed position and said outward open position;
- (f) a timing mechanism interconnecting between said pair of actuator arms by which each of said actuator arms is actuated an equal distance as each other actuator arm of said pair, but in opposite directions, upon actuation of said actuating cylinder, wherein said timing mechanism includes:
- (i) a first control arm, rigidly attached to one of said actuator arms and having a predetermined length between the pivot and a first connector point, which first connector point is positioned below said pivot point of said actuator arm;
- (ii) a second control arm, rigidly connected to said other actuator arm, having a second connector point at a distance from said pivot point of said actuating arm which is equal to said predetermined length of said first control arm, and said second connector point being positioned above said pivot point; and
- (iii) a rigid connector rod, connecting to said first connector point of said first control arm and connecting to said second connector point of said second control arm, thereby causing said actuator arms to move in a fixed relationship relative to each other upon actuation of said actuating cylinder, and wherein said rigid rod, which is connected between said first and second control arms, has an adjustable length so that the position of said pair of bay doors can be adjusted to meet at a contact point along the center line at the hopper so that maximum retention of granular material within the hopper is maintained during transport.
- 3. A hopper for holding granular material for transport in and for dumping from a dual use, belly-dumping and end-dumping vehicle, said hopper comprising:
- (a) angled side walls and end walls defining a top opening and a bottom opening;
- (b) a first pair of spaced apart pivot points attached to at least one of said end walls, each pivot point spaced apart in opposite directions from a center line of said hopper a predetermined distance which is less than one-half of the distance between the center line and each respective side wall;
- (c) a pair of actuator arms pivotably connected to said pair of pivot points;
- (d) a pair of hopper bay doors, connected to said pair of actuator arms and having an inwardly pivoted closed position at which said hopper bay doors cover said bottom opening and an outwardly pivoted open position at which said hopper doors pivot in opposite directions from each other to uncover at least part of said bottom opening and each bay door having a curved interior surface with a radius of curvature approximately equal to the distance from the bottom opening to said pivot points, so that an imaginary vertical line from said pivot points to said hopper doors intersects the interior door surface at a point which is closer to the center line than to the side walls at the bottom hopper opening, thereby causing a greater proportion of the granular material in said hopper to act by the force of gravity to pivot each door inwardly to a closed position;
- (e) a hydraulic actuating cylinder, attached between said actuator arms, and operatively connected to a controllable hydraulic pressure supply to selectably move said hopper bay doors between said inward closed position and said outward open position, wherein said controllable hydraulic pressure supply comprises an electrically driven hydraulic pump.
- 4. The hopper, as in claim 3, wherein said electrically driven hydraulic pump is mounted to said dual use vehicle adjacent to said hopper toward an end of said vehicle at which said hopper is pivotable for end dumping.
