Claims
- 1. A method of transmitting at least one optical signal comprising at least one through channel and a switched channel in an optical network including at least one optical amplifier, the method comprising:
transmitting said at least one optical signal; and amplifying said transmitted optical signal using a linear amplification regime of said at least one optical amplifier, the through channel experiencing insubstantial transient impact from the switched channel.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of transmitting further comprises a step of transmitting said at least one optical signal on at least one wavelength division multiplexed channel.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said at least one switched channel of said signal carries bursty traffic.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of amplifying further comprises a step of amplifying the transmitted optical signal to provide at most one decibel of gain compression.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of amplifying further comprises a step of amplifying the transmitted optical signal to provide at most three decibels of gain compression.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of amplifying further comprises a step of amplifying said transmitted optical signal using a linear amplification regime of at least one semiconductor optical amplifier.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of amplifying further comprises a step of amplifying said transmitted optical signal using a linear amplification regime of at least one erbium-doped fiber optical amplifier.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of amplifying further comprises a step of amplifying said transmitted optical signal using a linear amplification regime of at least one Raman optical amplifier.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein said linear amplification regime includes a nearly linear amplification regime.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein said at least one switched channel comprises a channel that has been added or dropped at said optical amplifier.
- 11. An optical network operable to dynamically add/drop one or more channels from an optical signal, the optical network comprising:
a transmitter transmitting at least one optical signal comprising a plurality of channels in said network, said optical signal comprising at least one through channel and one switched channel; an optical trunk connected to said transmitter and carrying said at least one optical signal; a receiver connected to said trunk and receiving said at least one optical signal comprising said at least one through channel; and at least one optical amplifier operated in a linear amplification regime and amplifying said at least one optical signal transmitted from said transmitter, said through channel having no substantial adverse impact when said switched channel of said optical signal is switched to an on or off state.
- 12. The network of claim 11, wherein said at least one signal includes at least one wavelength division multiplexed channel.
- 13. The network of claim 11, wherein said at least one switched channel carries bursty traffic.
- 14. The network of claim 11, wherein said at least one optical amplifier amplifies said at least one signal to provide at most one decibel of gain compression.
- 15. The network of claim 11, wherein said at least one optical amplifier amplifies said at least one signal to provide at most three decibels of gain compression.
- 16. The network of claim 11, wherein said at least one optical amplifier includes at least one semiconductor optical amplifier.
- 17. The network of claim 11, wherein said at least one optical amplifier includes at least one erbium-doped fiber optical amplifier.
- 18. The network of claim 11, wherein said at least one optical amplifier includes at least one Raman optical amplifier.
- 19. The network of claim 11, wherein said at least one optical amplifier amplifies said optical signal in said trunk.
- 20. The network of claim 11, wherein said at least one optical amplifier amplifies said signal in said receiver.
- 21. The network of claim 11, wherein said linear amplification regime includes a nearly linear amplification regime.
- 22. The network of claim 11 further comprising an add-drop fiber node for adding or dropping at least one channel, said add-drop fiber node intermediate said transmitter and said receiver, the through channel experiencing insubstantial transient impact by adding or dropping said at least one channel at said add-drop fiber node.
- 23. A method of transmitting at least one optical signal comprising at least one switched channel in an optical network including at least one optical amplifier, the method comprising:
transmitting said at least one optical signal; and amplifying said transmitted optical signal using a linear amplification regime of said at least one optical amplifier, the switched channel experiencing insubstantial transient impact from the transmission of data on said switched channel.
