Claims
- 1. A method for transmitting data over a telecommunication system that uses a multi-carrier transmission scheme from a head end to a service unit wherein the service unit is assigned to a subband of a transmission channel of the telecommunication system, the subband including a number of payload channels that transmit data at a first rate and a control channel that transmits data at a second rate, the second rate being slower than the first rate, the method comprising the steps of:receiving a request to transmit data to a service unit at the second, slower rate; determining whether to transmit the data at the first, faster rate based on the size of the data; when a payload channel in the subband is available to transmit the data at the first rate, allocating the payload channel to transmit the data to the service unit over the payload channel; and when the payload channels are allocated to service units and at least one of the allocated payload channels is idle, reallocating the idle payload channel to transmit the data to the service unit over the payload channel at the first rate.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of receiving a request to transmit data to a service unit at the second rate comprises the step of receiving a request to download software to the service unit over a payload channel.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of receiving a request to transmit data at the second rate to a service unit comprises the step of receiving a request to transmit data for a protocol over a payload channel to be used by the service unit in further communications.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the step of receiving a request to transmit data for a protocol comprises the step of receiving a request to transmit data for the LAPB protocol so that the LAPB protocol can be used for transmission on a payload channel.
- 5. The method of claim 1, and further comprising the step of deallocating the payload channel when a request with a priority higher than the data transmission is received.
