Claims
- 1. A mower comprising:
a frame; a plurality of wheels including at least a first drive wheel operatively supported by said frame; an engine operatively mounted to said frame; a mower deck operatively connected to said frame; and, a dynamic drive system for use in transferring power from said engine to said at least first drive wheel, said dynamic drive system including,
A) a drive pulley that is selectively rotated by said engine; B) a driven pulley that is operatively connected to said at least first drive wheel; C) a double pulley having first and second pulley portions; D) a first belt operatively connecting said drive pulley to said first pulley portion of said double pulley; E) a second belt operatively connecting said second pulley portion of said double pulley to said driven pulley; F) engaging means for use in selectively engaging said first belt to said drive pulley and said double pulley; and, F) an idler pulley that is used to take up any slack in said first and second belts.
- 2. The mower of claim 1 wherein said dynamic drive system further comprises:
a transmission that is operatively connected to said at least first drive wheel; and, a driven pulley shaft that is operatively connected to said transmission, said driven pulley being fixedly connected to said driven pulley shaft, said driven pulley shaft having an axis that is fixed with respect to said frame.
- 3. The mower of claim 1 wherein said second belt has a tension side and a slack side, said driven pulley operatively contacting said second belt in first and second distinct locations, said first distinct location being on said tension side of said second belt and said second distinct location being on said slack side of said second belt.
- 4. The mower of claim 1 wherein said double pulley comprises:
a double pulley shaft, said double pulley shaft having an axis that is fixed with respect to said frame.
- 5. The mower of claim 4 wherein said first and second pulley portions selectively permit said first and second belts respectively to contact said double pulley shaft.
- 6. The mower of claim 1 wherein said driven pulley is located between said double pulley and said idler pulley.
- 7. The mower of claim 1 wherein said engaging means comprises:
a double idler pulley system having first and second double idler pulleys rotatably connected to first and second idler pulley shafts respectively, said first and second idler pulley shafts being operatively connected to a double idler pulley bracket that is pivotably connected to said frame, said first belt passing between said first and second double idler pulleys.
- 8. The mower of claim 7 wherein said engaging means further comprises:
an accelerator pedal that selectively rotates an accelerator rod that is operatively connected to said double idler pulley bracket; and, an accelerator spring that biases said acceleration pedal and said accelerator rod toward a zero acceleration condition.
- 9. The mower of claim 2 further comprising:
wherein said second belt has a tension side and a slack side, said driven pulley operatively contacting said second belt in first and second distinct locations, said first distinct location being on said tension side of said second belt and said second distinct location being on said slack side of said second belt; wherein said double pulley includes a double pulley shaft having an axis that is fixed with respect to said frame; wherein said driven pulley is located between said double pulley and said idler pulley; wherein said engaging means includes,
A) a double idler pulley system having first and second double idler pulleys rotatably connected to first and second idler pulley shafts respectively, said first and second idler pulley shafts being operatively connected to a double idler pulley bracket that is pivotably connected to said frame, said first belt passing between said first and second double idler pulleys; B) an accelerator pedal that selectively rotates an accelerator rod that is operatively connected to said double idler pulley bracket; and, C) an accelerator spring that biases said acceleration pedal and said accelerator rod toward a zero acceleration condition.
- 10. A belt system comprising:
a drive pulley; a driven pulley; a belt operatively connecting said drive pulley to said driven pulley, said belt having a tension side and a slack side; and, an idler pulley that contacts both said tension side and said slack side of said belt.
- 11. The belt system of claim 10 wherein said driven pulley is located between said drive pulley and said idler pulley.
- 12. The belt system of claim 11 wherein said driven pulley operatively contacts said belt in first and second distinct locations, said first distinct location being on said tension side of said belt and said second distinct location being on said slack side of said belt.
- 13. A method of accelerating a mower comprising the steps of:
providing a mower having a frame, a plurality of wheels including at least a first drive wheel operatively supported by said frame, an engine operatively mounted to said frame, and a mower deck operatively connected to said frame; providing a dynamic drive system for use in transferring power from said engine to said at least first drive wheel, said dynamic drive system having a drive pulley that is selectively rotatable by said engine, a driven pulley that is operatively connected to said at least first drive wheel, a double pulley having first and second pulley portions and a double pulley shaft, a first belt used to operatively connect said drive pulley to said first pulley portion of said double pulley, a second belt used to operatively connect said second pulley portion of said double pulley to said driven pulley, and an idler pulley used to take up any slack in said first and second belts; depressing an acceleration pedal; engaging said first belt to said engine pulley and to said first pulley portion of said double pulley in a manner corresponding to the amount of depression provided to said acceleration pedal; decreasing the diameter of said first belt about said double pulley shaft; increasing the diameter of said second belt about said double pulley shaft; absorbing tension in said second belt with said idler pulley; rotating said driven pulley at a first rotational speed; and, accelerating said at least first drive wheel.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein, the step of depressing an acceleration pedal, comprises the step of:
overcoming a biasing force of an acceleration spring.
- 15. The method of claim 13 wherein, the step of engaging said first belt to said engine pulley and to said first pulley portion of said double pulley in a manner corresponding to the amount of depression provided to said acceleration pedal, comprises the steps of:
providing a double idler pulley system having first and second pulleys rotatably connected to first and second pulley shafts respectively that are operatively connected to a pulley bracket that is pivotably connected to said frame; and, pivoting the pulley bracket about said frame thereby applying tension to said first belt.
- 16. The method of claim 13 wherein, the step of absorbing tension in said second belt with said idler pulley, comprises the steps of:
providing said idler pulley to be rotatably connected to a pulley bracket that is pivotably connected to said frame; and, pivoting said pulley bracket about said frame such that said idler pulley contacts both the tension and slack side of said second belt.
- 17. The method of claim 13 wherein, the step of rotating said driven pulley, comprises the step of:
contacting said driven pulley to both the tension and slack side of said second belt.
- 18. The method of claim 13 further comprising the steps of:
releasing said acceleration pedal; decreasing the tension in said first belt in a manner corresponding to the amount of release provided to said acceleration pedal; increasing the diameter of said first belt about said double pulley shaft; decreasing the diameter of said second belt about said double pulley shaft; absorbing slack in said second belt with said idler pulley; rotating said driven pulley at a second rotational speed that is less than said first rotational speed; and, decelerating said at least first drive wheel.
