Claims
- 1. (I) In a vehicle having a right and left side and substantially massive components, and having at least one fixed body member connected with substantial rigidity to substantially all of the substantially massive components of said vehicle, a vehicle structure having an operating position attained during normal driving conditions and an extended position attained at the time of occupant access to the vehicle, said vehicle structure having a means to divert the impact energy in lateral impacts to be absorbed by said vehicle through the at least one fixed body member while releasing the occupants each having mass, weight, left and right sides, a back and a bottom, to move independently of said vehicle, in a predetermined controlled fashion, in order to minimize injury to such occupants.
- 2. The vehicle structure of claim 1, further comprising a passenger support mechaninsm that supports said occupant, and wherein said predetermined controlled motion of the occupants relative to the fixed body members of the vehicle is substantially achieved by shock abosorbing devices each with two ends, the first of said two ends being attached to the fixed body members of the vehicle and the second of said two ends being attached directly or indirectly to said passenger support mechanism.
- 3. The vehicle comprising floor and a center tunnel lying along the central axis of said vehicle and extending from the bottom of said floor, and said vehicle comprising a structure of claim 1, said vehicle structure further comprising a passenger support mechanism with a bottom that supports said occupant, and wherein said center tunnel extends to a height that is above the bottom of said passenger support mechanism, and wherein said predetermined controlled motion of said occupant and passenger support mechanism requires said passenger support mechanism to cross said center tunnel, a structure for said center tunnel that allows said center tunnel to crush in a lateral direction when a lateral force greater than a predetermined force is applied to it by said passenger support mechanism during a side impact.
- 4. The vehicle with vehicle structure as in claim 2, wherein said center tunnel comprises a section that is substantially the lateral profile of said passenger support mechanism, said saction being constructed and attached to the remaining center tunnel such that it will detach when it is impacted by said passenger support mechanism with a a force greater than a predetermined force during a side impact.
- 5. The vehicle structure of claim 4, wherein said passenger support mechanism comprises a cutting edge that is positioned along the lateral profile of said passenger support mechanism, such that in the event of a side impact, said cutting edge impacts said center tunnel and thereby cuts it and bends the wall of said center tunnel, thereby providing space for lateral movement of said passenger support mechanism in a side impact.
- 5. A vehicle structure of claim 1, further comprising an actively deployed airbag, and wherein said occupant comprises a head, a neck, a thorax, and two upper legs and a left side, a right side, a back and a bottom, and wherein said occupant is supported by a passenger support mechanism, one or more pairs of micro air cushions each connected to said actively deployed airbag, member of each pair being on the left side and the right side of said occupant, at the same lateral position, and positioned to support one or more of the head, the neck, the thorax, and upper legs, in the event of a lateral impact, and following deployment of said actively deployed airbag.
- 6. The vehicle comprising floor and a center tunnel lying along the central axis of said vehicle and extending from the bottom of said floor, and said vehicle comprising a structure of claim 1, said vehicle structure further comprising a passenger support mechanism with a bottom supported by one or more secondary slides each detachably connected by a connecting surface to said fixed body members of said vehicle, and slidably connected to said connecting surface following a force greater than a predetermined lateral force being applied to the passenger support mechaninsm and the attached secondary slide, and wherein said passenger support mechanism supporting said occupant, and wherein said center tunnel extends to a height that is above the bottom of said secondary slides that supports said passenger support mechanism, and wherein said predetermined controlled motion of said occupant and passenger support mechanism requires said passenger support mechanism to cross the lateral position of said center tunnel, an inclined connecting surface of said secondary slide that slides the passenger support mechanism over said center tunnel, when a force greater than a predetermined force is applied to said passenger support mechanism and secondary slide during a side impact.
