Claims
- 1. A method for identifying a compound that modulates the activation of an eck receptor comprising the steps of:a) exposing cells exhibiting the receptor to a ligand in the absence or presence of the compound for a time sufficient to allow formation of a receptor-ligand complex and to induce signal transduction; b) determining the extent of activation; and c) comparing activation in the presence of the compound to activation in the absence of the compound; wherein the ligand comprises a polypeptide having an amino acid sequence as shown in SEQ ID NO: 1 or a fragment of SEQ ID NO: 1 which activates an eck receptor.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the ligand comprises an N-terminal amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 14.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the activation is detected by a change in proliferation, differentiation or metabolism of cells contacted with the ligand.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the cells are bone marrow cells.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the cells are colon crypt cells.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the cells are endothelial cells.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the cells are cancer cells or are capable of becoming cancer cells when contacted with the ligand.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the activation is eck receptor phosphorylation.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the ligand comprises an N-terminal amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 14 and a C-terminal sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 13.
