Claims
- 1. A gasket comprising:
a base sheet of contiguous substantially porous gasket material having a predetermined thickness and two opposed substantially parallel faces; said base sheet being configured to define at least one aperture bounded by an interior edge of said base sheet; and an edge coating disposed on said interior edge of said base sheet, said edge coating being formulated and configured to provide an enhanced seal when said gasket is compressed between a pair of flange surfaces.
- 2. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and wherein said edge coating is a polymeric coating.
- 3. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and wherein said edge coating is a latex coating.
- 4. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and wherein said edge coating is a powder fused coating.
- 5. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and wherein said opposed faces lie in respective spaced apart facial planes and wherein said edge coating has edge portions adjacent said facial planes, a central portion intermediate said facial planes, a thickness in a direction substantially parallel to said facial planes, and a width in a direction substantially transverse to said facial planes.
- 6. A gasket as claimed in claim 5 and wherein said thickness of said edge coating is substantially the same throughout said width of said edge coating.
- 7. A gasket as claimed in claim 5 and wherein said thickness of said edge coating is greater at said central portion of said edge coating than at said edge portions of said edge coating.
- 8. A gasket as claimed in claim 5 and wherein said edge coating has a width substantially the same as said predetermined thickness of said base sheet, said edge portions of said edge coating substantially lying within said facial planes.
- 9. A gasket as claimed in claim 5 and wherein at least one of said edge portions of said edge coating protrudes beyond its respective facial plane to define a protruding rim.
- 10. A gasket as claimed in claim 9 and wherein said rim tapers inwardly in a direction extending away from its respective facial plane.
- 11. A gasket as claimed in claim 9 and wherein each of said edge portions of said edge coating projects beyond its respective facial plane to define spaced apart protruding rims disposed on either side of said base sheet.
- 12. A gasket as claimed in claim 11 and wherein each of said protruding rims is inwardly tapered in a direction extending away from its respective facial plane.
- 13. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and further comprising a face coating on a portion of at least one of said faces of said base sheet, said face coating extending in a strip around said aperture and having a thickness and a width.
- 14. A gasket as claimed in claim 13 and wherein said face coating covers less than about 50 percent of the area of said face.
- 15. A gasket as claimed in clam 13 and wherein said width of said face coating is less than about 1.5 centimeters.
- 16. A gasket as claimed in claim 13 and wherein said thickness of said face coating is less than about 11 mils.
- 17. A gasket as claimed in claim 13 and wherein said face coating is formed of a material different from the material of said edge coating.
- 18. A gasket as claimed in claim 17 and wherein said face coating abuts said edge coating around said aperture.
- 19. A gasket as claimed in claim 13 and wherein said edge coating wraps at least partially onto said face of said base sheet to form said face coating, said edge coating and said face coating being made of the same material.
- 20. A gasket as claimed in claim 19 and wherein said face coating covers no more than about 50 percent of said face.
- 21. A gasket as claimed in claim 19 and wherein said thickness of said face coating is no more than about 11 mils.
- 22. A gasket as claimed in claim 13 and further comprising a face coating on each of said faces of said base sheet, each of said face coatings extending in a strip around said aperture and having a thickness and a width.
- 23. A gasket as claimed in claim 22 and wherein each of said face coatings covers at most about 50 percent of its respective face.
- 24. A gasket as claimed in claim 22 and wherein said width of each of said face coatings is at most about 1.5 centimeters.
- 25. A gasket as claimed in claim 22 and wherein said thickness of each of said face coatings is at most about 11 mils.
- 26. A gasket as claimed in claim 13 and wherein each of said face coatings is made of a material different from the material of said edge coating and wherein each face coating abuts said edge coating around said aperture.
- 27. A gasket as claimed in claim 13 and wherein said edge coating wraps at least partially onto said faces of said base sheet to form said face coatings, said face coatings being formed of the same material as said edge coating.
- 28. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and further comprising a release coating on at least one of said faces to enhance removal of said gasket after use.
- 29. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and wherein said base sheet is configured on at least one of said faces to define a depressed region of said base sheet extending around said aperture.
- 30. A gasket as claimed in claim 29 and further comprising a face coating on said depressed region of said base sheet.
- 31. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and wherein said opposed faces lie in respective spaced apart facial planes, said edge coating having edge portions adjacent said facial planes, a central portion intermediate said facial planes, a thickness in a direction substantially parallel to said facial planes, said gasket further comprising a face coating on a portion of at least one face of said base sheet, said face coating extending in a strip around said aperture and having a thickness and a width.
- 32. A gasket as claimed in claim 2, wherein said polymeric coating is selected from a group consisting essentially of:
acrylic, acrylonitrile, acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, fluoro polymers, hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, styrene butadiene polymer, fluoroelastomer polymer, acrylic-acrylonitrile polymers, carboxylated acrylonitrile polymer, carboxylated styrene butadiene polymer, polyvinylidene chloride, chloroprene rubber polymer, ethylene propylene rubber polymer, ethylene/vinyl acetate polymer, epoxy, fluorosilicones, polyurethane, and silicone rubber coatings and mixtures thereof.
- 33. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and wherein said interior edge of said base sheet is substantially porous.
- 34. A gasket as claimed in claim 33 and wherein said edge coating penetrates said interior edge of said base sheet to form an intrusion zone surrounding said aperture.
- 35. A gasket as claimed in claim 33 and further comprising a primer disposed on said interior edge, said primer penetrating said interior edge to form an intrusion zone surrounding said aperture and said edge coating being disposed on said primer.
- 36. A gasket comprising a base sheet of compressible gasket material having a predetermined thickness and spaced apart substantially parallel faces lying in respective facial planes, said base sheet being configured to define an interior aperture bounded by a substantially porous interior edge of said base sheet, said interior edge extending between said facial planes, and an edge coating formed on said interior edge of said base sheet, said edge coating extending at least partially around said aperture and penetrating said substantially porous edge to form an intrusion zone surrounding said interior aperture.
- 37. A gasket as claimed in claim 36 and wherein said edge coating has a thickness in a direction substantially parallel to said facial planes and a width in a direction substantially transverse to said facial planes.
- 38. A gasket as claimed in claim 37 and wherein said width of said edge coating is greater than said predetermined thickness of said base sheet, said edge coating protruding beyond at least one of said facial planes to define a protruding rim relative to said facial plane, said protruding rim extending at least partially around said aperture.
- 39. A gasket as claimed in claim 38 and wherein said edge coating protrudes beyond each of said facial planes to define a first protruding rim relative to one of said facial planes and a second protruding rim relative to the other one of said facial planes, said first and second protruding rims extending at least partially around said aperture.
- 40. A gasket as claimed in claim 39 and wherein said first protruding rim and said second protruding rim are inwardly tapered beyond their respective facial planes.
- 41. A gasket as claimed in claim 37 and wherein said thickness of said edge coating is substantially uniform across said width of said edge coating.
- 42. A gasket as claimed in claim 37 and wherein said thickness of said edge coating increases from said facial planes toward a central portion of said edge coating.
- 43. A gasket as claimed in claim 36 and further comprising a face coating on at least one of said faces of said base sheet, said face coating extending in a strip around said aperture and having a thickness and a width.
- 44. A gasket as claimed in claim 43 and wherein said width of said face coating is predetermined to insure that said face coating covers less than about 50 percent of the area of said face.
- 45. A gasket as claimed in claim 43 and wherein said thickness of said face coating is less than about 11 mils.
- 46. A gasket as claimed in claim 43 and wherein said face coating is formed of a material different from the material of said edge coating.
- 47. A gasket as claimed in claim 46 and wherein said face coating abuts said edge coating around said aperture.
- 48. A method of making edge coated gaskets comprising the steps of:
(a) providing a plurality of base sheets each having opposed faces and at least one interior edge surrounding and defining an aperture; (b) stacking the plurality of base sheets together with their interior edges aligned with each other, the aligned edges defining and being exposed on the walls of a cavity; (c) coating the walls of the cavity with a coating material; and (d) removing individual base sheets from the stack, a strip of the coating material remaining on the interior edge of each removed base sheet to form an edge coated gasket.
- 49. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 48 and wherein the base sheets are made of a compressible gasket material and wherein the interior edges of the base sheets are substantially porous.
- 50. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 49 and where in step (c) the coating material at least partially penetrates the porous interior edges of the base sheets to form intrusion zones surrounding the apertures of the base sheets.
- 51. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 48 and wherein step (c) comprises depositing coating material in the cavity, closing off the cavity, and rotating the stack of base sheets in such a way that the coating material flows around and progressively coats the walls of the cavity.
- 52. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 51 and wherein step (b) further comprises stacking the base sheets on a base having a well formed therein, the well having the shape of and being aligned with the interior edges of the stacked gaskets, and wherein the step of depositing coating material in the cavity comprises at least partially filling the well with coating material.
- 53. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 52 and further comprising the step of tilting the stack and base prior to rotating the stack such that the coating material flows out of the well and onto the walls of the cavity.
- 54. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 53 and wherein the step of tilting the stack and base comprises tilting the stack and base until the walls of the cavity are substantially horizontally oriented.
- 55. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 54 and wherein the step of rotating the stack and base comprises rotating the stack and base through a predetermined number of rotations sufficient to deposit a coating of a desired thickness on the walls of the cavity.
- 56. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 54 and wherein step (d) includes separating individual base sheets from the stack before the coating material completely thickens, the coating material elongating along the line of separation to define protruding rims of coating material surrounding the apertures of the base sheets.
- 57. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 48 and wherein step (b) includes providing at least one spacer between each base sheet in the stack, the spacers having apertures aligned with the apertures of the base sheets.
- 58. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 57 and wherein a single spacer is provided between each base sheet in the stack, the aperture of each single spacer being larger than the aperture of the gaskets to form recessed areas between the base sheets, the coating material flowing into the recessed areas in step (c) to form face coatings on each base sheet surrounding the aperture thereof.
- 59. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 57 and wherein a single spacer is disposed between each base sheet in the stack, the single spacer having an aperture smaller than the apertures of the base sheets.
- 60. A method of making edge coated gaskets as claimed in claim 57 and wherein more than one spacer is disposed between each base sheet, the spacers having apertures sized to create molded face coatings on said base sheets.
- 61. A method of making edge coated gaskets comprising the steps of:
(a) providing a plurality of base sheets, each base sheet having opposed faces and an interior edge surrounding and defining an aperture of the base sheet; (b) forming a stack from said plurality of base sheets with the interior edges of the base sheets being aligned with each other to define the walls of a cavity in the stack; (c) depositing a predetermined amount of coating material in flowable form in the cavity; (d) orienting the stack so that the walls of the cavity extend substantially horizontally; (e) rotating the stack at a predetermined rate of rotation to cause the coating material to flow progressively around the walls of the cavity to deposit a coating layer on the exposed interior edges of the base sheets; and (f) removing individual base sheets from the stack, a portion of the coating layer remaining on the interior edge of each removed base sheet to form an edge coated gasket.
- 62. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 61 and wherein step (b) includes disposing at least one spacer between base sheets in the stack.
- 63. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 61 and wherein step (b) includes forming the stack atop a plate having a well closing one end of the cavity and wherein step (c) includes at least partially filling the well with coating material prior to orienting the stack.
- 64. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 61 and wherein step (f) comprises separating individual base sheets from the stack before the coating layer is completely thickened, the coating material deforming along the line of separation to form protruding rims of coating material surrounding the aperture of each gasket.
- 65. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 64 and further comprising the step of completing the thickening of the coating material on each gasket after the gaskets are separated from the stack to set the shape and properties of the edge coatings.
- 66. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 61 and wherein the coating material is a polymer.
- 67. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 61 and wherein the coating material is a latex.
- 68. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 61 and wherein the coating material is a powder fused coating.
- 69. A method of making an edge coated gasket comprising the steps of providing a plurality of base sheets each having opposed faces and an interior edge surrounding and defining an aperture, stacking the plurality of base sheets together with their apertures aligned to define the walls of a cavity, contacting the walls of the cavity with a coating material to deposit a layer of coating material on the aligned edges of the base sheets, and separating individual base sheets from the stack to form edge coated gaskets.
- 70. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 69 and wherein the step of contacting the walls of the cavity comprises depositing coating material in flowable form in the cavity and manipulating the stack in such a way that the coating material flows over and coats the walls of the cavity.
- 71. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 70 and wherein the step of manipulating the stack comprises rotating the stack to cause the coating material to flow progressively around the walls of the cavity.
- 72. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 69 and wherein the step of contacting the walls of the cavity with a coating material comprises spraying the coating material onto the walls of the cavity.
- 73. A method of making an edge coating gasket as claimed in claim 69 and wherein the step of contacting the walls of the cavity with a coating material comprises filling the cavity with coating material and draining the coating material after a predetermined time to leave a coating on the walls of the cavity.
- 74. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 69 and wherein the step of contacting the walls of the cavity with a coating material comprises wiping the coating material onto the walls of the cavity.
- 75. A method of making an edge coated gasket as claimed in claim 69 and wherein the step of contacting the walls of the cavity with a coating material comprises flame spraying the coating material onto the walls of the cavity.
- 76. A gasket comprising:
a base sheet of gasket material having opposed faces lying in respective facial planes and an interior edge that surrounds and defines an aperture; an edge coating disposed on said interior edge of said base sheet; said edge coating projecting beyond at least one of said facial planes to define a rim extending at least partially around said aperture.
- 77. A gasket as claimed in claim 76 and further comprising a face coating on at least one of said faces of said base sheet, said face coating extending at least partially around said aperture adjacent said interior edge of said base sheet.
- 78. A gasket as claimed in claim 77 and wherein said edge coating at least partially wraps onto said face to form said face coating.
- 79. A gasket as claimed in claim 76 and wherein said edge coating projects beyond each of said facial planes to form opposed rims that extend at least partially around said aperture.
- 80. A gasket as claimed in claim 79 and wherein said interior edge of said base sheet is substantially porous.
- 81. A gasket as claimed in claim 80 and wherein said edge coating at least partially penetrates said interior edge of said base sheet to form an intrusion zone extending at least partially around said aperture.
- 82. A gasket as claimed in claim 76 and further comprising an undercoating disposed on said interior edge of said base sheet, said undercoating at least partially penetrating said interior edge of said base sheet to form an intrusion zone at least partially surrounding said aperture, said edge coating being disposed on said undercoating.
- 83. A gasket as claimed in claim 79 and further comprising a face coating on each of said faces, each of said face coatings extending in a strip at least partially around said aperture.
- 84. A gasket as claimed in claim 83 and wherein each of said face coatings covers less than about fifty percent of the area of its respective face.
- 85. A gasket as claimed in claim 84 and wherein said face coatings are less than about 11 mils thick.
- 86. A gasket as claimed in claim 83 and wherein said edge coating wraps partially onto said faces of said base sheet to form said face coatings.
- 87. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and further comprising an undercoating disposed on said interior edge of said base sheet, said undercoating at least partially penetrating said interior edge of said base sheet to form an intrusion zone at least partially surrounding said aperture, said edge coating being disposed on said undercoating.
- 88. A gasket as claimed in claim 1 and wherein said edge coating is an inorganic/organic hybrid.
- 89. A gasket as claimed in claim 76 and wherein said base sheet of gasket material comprises an on-core gasket material.
- 90. A gasket comprising a base sheet of contiguous substantial porous gasket material having opposed faces lying in respective facial planes and an exterior edge extending around the periphery of said base sheet, and an edge coating disposed on said exterior edge of said base sheet.
- 91. A gasket as claimed in claim 90 and wherein said base sheet has an interior edge bounding an aperture of the base sheet and further comprising an edge coating disposed on said interior edge of said base sheet surrounding said aperture.
- 92. A gasket as claimed in claim 90 and wherein said edge coating protrudes beyond at least one of said facial planes to form a rim extending at least partially around said periphery.
