Claims
- 1. A slider comprising:
a slider body; an air bearing elevated above the slider body; and an elevated rim cap elevated above the slider body and including a rounded interface surface for head-disc impact protection.
- 2. The slider of claim 1 wherein the rounded interface surface extends from a base of the rim cap to an upper surface of the rim cap.
- 3. The slider of claim 1 wherein the elevated rim cap is formed via a masking process.
- 4. The slider of claim 1 wherein the rounded interface surface of the rim cap is formed via a mechanical, ion milling or chemical rounding process.
- 5. The slider of claim 1 wherein a portion of the rim cap is formed integral with the air bearing.
- 6. The slider of claim 1 wherein the slider is coupled to an E-block and assembled in a disc drive.
- 7. The slider of claim 1 wherein the rim cap extends along leading, trailing and side edges of the slider.
- 8. The slider of claim 1 wherein the rounded interface surface includes an outer layer of diamond-like carbon.
- 9. A slider comprising:
a slider body; an air bearing elevated above the slider body; the slider body including rounded edges; and at least one raised corner caps spaced from the rounded edges of the slider body extending above the slider body to an elevation below the air bearing, the corner caps having a rounded interface surface for impact protection.
- 10. The slider of claim 9 including at least four corner caps.
- 11. The slider of claim 9 wherein the rounded interface surface of the corner cap extends from a base of the corner cap along a rise of the corner cap to an upper surface of the raised corner cap.
- 12. The slider of claim 9 wherein the corner cap includes a curved outward face.
- 13. The slider of claim 9 wherein the corner cap is semi-circular shaped.
- 14. The slider of claim 9 wherein the slider body includes rounded edges along leading, trailing and side edges of the slider.
- 15. The slider of claim 9 wherein the slider is coupled to an E-block and assembled in a disc drive.
- 16. The slider of claim 9 wherein the rounded edges are formed by a chemical, mechanical or ion milling rounding process.
- 17. The slider of claim 9 wherein the raised corner cap includes an outer layer of diamond-like carbon.
- 18. A slider comprising:
a slider body having a leading, trailing and side edges; an air bearing elevated about the slider body; and edge protection means for providing contact interface protection for the slider body and the air bearing.
- 19. The slider of claim 18 wherein the edge protection means includes;
rounded edges extending about a perimeter of the slider body; and raised corner caps spaced from the perimeter edges of the slider body and elevated above the slider body to an elevation below the air bearing, the raised corner caps including a rounded interface surface for impact protection.
- 20. The slider of claim 18 wherein the edge protection means includes an elevated rim cap extending about a perimeter of the slider body.
