Claims
- 1. In a machine for grading shelled eggs according to the weight of the eggs, an endless traveling conveyor means for advancing the individual eggs to one of a series of transfer stations at each of which eggs of like weight characterization are discharged for further handling, means for providing a clock signal when an individual egg reaches each transfer station, said conveyor having longitudinally spaced, individual egg receiving pockets, means at each of said transfer stations for discharging eggs laterally from the conveyor pockets which are advanced to that station, one or more egg weighing devices arranged at an egg receiving station along one side of said conveyor, means at said receiving station for delivering successive eggs to individual weighing devices and each said weighing device comprising means for generating an electrical impulse which varies according to the weight of the eggs, means at said receiving station for moving eggs from said weighing devices into the pockets of said conveyor, an electrical control circuit for actuating the operation of the egg discharging means at said transfer stations, said control circuit actuating said discharging means being responsive to said electrical impulses and said clock signals whereby to discharge eggs of the same weight characterization at each of said transfer stations.
- 2. In a machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said weighing devices each comprise a strain gauge apparatus.
- 3. In a machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said electrical control circuit includes a memory device comprising at least one shift register which is responsive to said electrical impulses and said clock signals.
- 4. In a machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said electrical control circuit comprises a plurality of comparators responsive to said electrical impulses for providing intermediate control signals and an inhibit circuit coupled to said comparators for providing weight indicative control signals responsive to said intermediate control signals.
- 5. In a machine as set forth in claim 4 wherein said electrical control circuit comprises a memory device comprising a plurality of shift registers which are responsive to said weight indicative control signals and said clock signals for actuating said discharging means.
- 6. In an egg handling machine, a mechanism for sorting eggs of varying weight, into groups of predetermined weight ranges, an electronic weighing mechanism providing an electric current impulse output which varies according to the weight of an egg deposited thereon, means for delivering eggs to said weighing mechanism, an endless conveyor means having individual egg accomodating pockets, means for transferring successive eggs from the weighing mechanism to the conveyor pockets spaced along one side of said conveyor means, means for providing an indexing signal each time an egg passes one of said collecting points, and means at said collecting points which is operative according to the electric current output of said weighing mechanism and in response to said indexing signals for forcing the eggs out of the sides of the conveyor pockets.
- 7. In an egg handling machine, a mechanism for sorting eggs according to their weight which comprises a solid state weighing device capable of producing an electric current impulse which varies according to the weight of the egg placed thereon, an associated conveying means extending along one side of said weighing device and a plurality of collecting points spaced along one side of said conveying means, means for providing a clock signal as an egg passes each said collecting point and an electrical control circuit for said conveying means coupled to said weighing device and comprising a plurality of comparators responsive to said electrical impulses for providing intermediate control signals and an inhibit circuit coupled to said comparators for inhibiting all but one of said intermediate control signals, said one control signal being a weight indicative control signal, and means responsive to said weight indicative control signals and said clock signals whereby to convey successive eggs from the weighing device to said collecting points according to the output of the weighing device.
- 8. In a machine for sorting articles having the general characteristics of shell eggs according to their weight, a solid state weighing mechanism providing an electric current impulse which varies according to the weight of an article deposited thereon, a means for despositing successive articles on said weighing mechanism, traveling conveyor means for advancing the articles from the weighing mechanism to a series of stations disposed in space relation along one series of stations disposed in spaced relation along one side of the path of advance of said conveyor means, each of said stations being adapted to receive articles of predetermined weight range, means for providing a clock pulse each time an egg passes one of said stations, transfer means for moving the articles from the weighing mechanism and guiding them in a lateral path onto said conveyor means, means at each of said stations for selectively discharging articles from said conveyor in a lateral path and an electrical control circuit coupled to said weighing device and comprising a plurality of comparators responsive to said current impulses for providing a set of intermediate control signals for each weight characterization and an inhibit circuit coupled to said comparators for inhibiting certain ones of said intermediate control signals to provide a weight indicative control signal for controlling the operation of said article discharging means responsive to said weight indicative control signals and said clock pulses so as to discharge articles at each of said stations which are of the same weight range.
- 9. In a machine as set forth in claim 8 wherein said control circuit further includes a memory device comprising a plurality of sets of shift registers, a given respective one of said sets of said shift registers and a given respective one of said shift registers of each set being associated with a given respective one of said stations and responsive to said inhibit circuit and said clock pulses so as to actuate said discharging means to discharge articles at each of said stations which are of the same weight range.
- 10. In a machine for grading units of a commodity of like kind and varying weight according to the weight of the units, a traveling conveyor means for advancing the individual units to one of a series of transfer stations at each of which units falling within the same weight range are discharged, means for providing a clock index pulse when an individual unit reaches each transfer station, said conveyor having individual unit receiving pockets which are longitudinally spaced along said conveyor, discharging means at each of said transfer stations for discharging units laterally from the conveyor pockets which are advanced to that station, at least one unit weighing device arranged at a unit receiving station along one side of said conveyor, means at said receiving station for delivering successive units to individual weighing devices and each said weighing device including means for providing an electrical impulse which varies responsive to the weight of the units, means at said receiving station for moving units from said weighing devices into the pockets of said conveyor, an electrical control circuit for actuating said unit discharging means at said transfer stations, said control circuit actuating said discharging means responsive to said electrical impulses and said index pulses whereby to discharge units falling within the same weight range at each of said transfer stations.
- 11. In a machine as set forth in claim 10 wherein said weighing devices each comprise a strain gauge apparatus and wherein said electrical control circuit comprises a memory device including a shift register which is responsive to said electrical impulses and said index pulses.
- 12. In a machine as set forth in claim 11 wherein said control circuit additionally comprises a plurality of comparators and reference sources for sensing said electrical impulses and for providing responsive to said electrical impulses intermediate control signals for actuating said memory device.
- 13. In a commodity unit handling machine, a means for sorting the commodity units of like kind and varying weight into groups of predetermined weight ranges, a weighing means for providing an electric impulse output having a magnitude determined by the weight of the unit being weighed, means for delivering units to said weighing means, an endless traveling conveyor means having individual unit carriers, means for transferring successive units from the weighing means to the conveyor carriers, a series of predetermined collecting points spaced along said conveyor means, each said collecting point corresponding to a given one of the weight ranges, means for providing an index signal each time a unit passes a collecting point, a discharge means at each collecting point for forcing the units out of the carriers and an electrical control means for controlling the operation of the discharge means comprising a sensor for sensing the magnitude of said electric impulse output and for providing responsive thereto a control signal indicating the weight range in which the unit being weighed falls, and a memory means responsive to said control signal and to said index signals for actuating the discharge means at the collecting point corresponding to the weight range in which the weight of the unit falls.
- 14. In a commodity unit handling machine as set forth in claim 13 wherein said sensor comprises a plurality of comparators and reference sources, each being equal in number to the number of predetermined weight ranges for providing intermediate control signals and an inhibit circuit responsive to said intermediate control signals for providing said weight range indicative control signal and wherein said memory means comprises a like plurality of shift registers, a respective given one of said shift registers being associated with a respective given one of said collecting points for controlling its discharge means in response to said control signals and said index signals.
- 15. In a commodity unit handling machine as set forth in claim 14 wherein said inhibit circuit comprises a plurality of interconnected NAND and NOR gates.
