Claims
- 1. An acrylate elastomer, comprising at least 40 wt. %, based on the total weight of the elastomer, of one or more copolymers having a molecular weight greater than 50,000 daltons, said copolymer comprising monomer units of:
- (i) 50-95 wt. % acrylate monomers, and
- (ii) macromonomers or macromonomer mixtures comprising a vinylic group, having covalently bonded thereto, a polyvinyl unit selected from the group consisting of acrylates and methacrylates, said macromonomer having a glass transition temperature Tg of at least 60.degree. C. and a molecular weight of 500-100,000 daltons.
- 2. The elastomer of claim 1, wherein the non-uniformity calculated as (Mw-Mn)/Mn of said macromonomer is greater than 0.5.
- 3. The elastomer of claim 1, comprising
- A) 60-100 wt. % of said copolymer having a molecular weight greater than 500,000 daltons, said copolymer comprising monomer units of:
- i) 50-95 wt. %, based on the total weight of monomer components of A), of monomers having formula I ##STR18## ii) 5-50 wt. % of said macromonomers of macromonomer mixtures of formula II or III ##STR19## wherein Y is a polymer chain, iii) 0-45 wt. %, based on the sum of the weights of i) and ii), of a different vinyl compound which is copolymerizable with monomers i) and ii); and
- B) 40-0 wt. % of a polymer not copolymerizable with monomer i), said polymer comprising the monomer units of polymer chain Y and having a molecular weight in the range 500-100,000 daltons,
- wherein R.sub.1 is a C.sub.1-12 hydrocarbon group, R.sub.2 is hydrogen or methyl, R.sub.3 is a hydrogen or a C.sub.1-24 alkyl group, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are hydrogen, a C.sub.1-24 alkyl, or C.sub.2-20 hydrocarbon group, with the proviso that only one of R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 contains a --CH.sub.2 .dbd.CH-- or --CH.sub.2 .dbd.CCH.sub.3 -- group, Y is a polymer chain of monomer units V ##STR20## wherein R.sub.6 is methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl, R.sub.7 is C.sub.1-8 alkyl or aryl, n is a number such that the molecular weight of said macromonomer is in the range 500-100,000 daltons, and Q is a bifunctional organic group.
- 4. The elastomer of claim 3, comprising 60-99.9 wt. % of said copolymer, wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight in the range of 100,000-1,000,000 daltons.
- 5. The elastomer of claim 3, comprising 70-90 wt. % monomers of formula I.
- 6. The elastomer of claim 3, comprising 10-30 wt. % of said macromonomers of formula II or III.
- 7. The elastomer of claim 3, wherein said macromonomer has a molecular weight in the range 2,000-50,000 daltons.
- 8. The elastomer of claim 7, wherein said macromonomer has a molecular weight in the range 5,000-30,000 daltons.
- 9. The elastomer of claim 3, comprising 0.1-20 wt. % of said different vinyl compound copolymerizable with monomers i) and ii).
- 10. The elastomer of claim 3, comprising 40-0.1 wt. % of said polymer B).
- 11. The elastomer of claim 3, wherein n is a number in the range 10-1,000.
- 12. The elastomer of claim 3, wherein R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl and 2-ethylhexyl.
- 13. The elastomer of claim 3, wherein Q is selected from the group consisting of --C(O)--OX--, --OC(O)X--, --C(O)N(R.sub.3)X--, --N(R.sub.3)C(O)X--, and --(p--C.sub.6 H.sub.4)X-- groups, wherein X is a C.sub.2-24 alkylidene group or a C.sub.2-24 alkylidene group in which wherein one or more of the methylene groups of said alkylidene group are replaced with an oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen atom.
- 14. The elastomer of claim 13, wherein X is ##STR21##
- 15. The elastomer of claim 3, comprising
- A) 60-100 wt. % of the copolymer comprising monomer units of
- i) 50-95 wt. % of ethylacrylate, butylacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or mixtures thereof, and
- ii) 5-50 wt. % of a macromonomer of formula II' or II" ##STR22## wherein n' is 10-1,000.
- 16. The elastomer of claim 13, wherein said elastomer comprises 60-99.9 wt. % of said copolymer A) and 40-0.1 wt. % of said polymer B).
