Claims
- 1. A method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, the method comprising:
forming a protective overcoat over a magnetic recording layer; applying a fluoropolyether having at least one polymerizable group thereon to the protective overcoat; and polymerizing the fluoropolyether to form an elastomeric topcoat lubricant directly on the protective overcoat.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, comprising forming the protective overcoat to a thickness of no greater than about 50 Å.
- 3. The method according to claim 1, comprising forming a carbon containing layer as the protective overcoat.
- 4. The method according to claim 3, comprising forming the protective overcoat and the elastomeric lubricant topcoat to a combined thickness of no greater than about 60 Å.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, comprising forming an amorphous carbon layer of no greater than about 25 Å on the magnetic recording medium as the protective overcoat.
- 6. The method according to claim 1, comprising polymerizing the fluoropolyether to a crosslinked elastomeric fluoropolyether directly on the protective overcoat.
- 7. The method according to claim 1, comprising applying the fluoropolyether to a thickness of about 10 Å to about 30 Å.
- 8. The method according to claim 1, wherein lubricant is a perfluoropolyalkylether having one or more acrylate groups.
- 9. The method according to claim 8, wherein the fluoropolyether comprises a plurality of —(CaF2aO)n— repeating units, wherein subscript a is independently in each such unit an integer of from 1 to about 10 and n is an integer from 5 to about 80.
- 10. The method according to claim 1, wherein the fluoropolyether comprises a compound having the formula:
- 11. The method according to claim 1, comprising polymerizing the fluoropolyether by exposure to UV radiation.
- 12. A magnetic recording medium, comprising:
a substrate; a magnetic layer on the substrate; a protective overcoat on the magnetic layer; and an elastomeric fluoropolyether topcoat directly on the protective overcoat.
- 13. The magnetic recording medium of claim 12, wherein the protective overcoat has a thickness of no greater than about 50 Å.
- 14. The magnetic recording medium of claim 12, wherein the protective overcoat and the elastomeric fluoropolyether topcoat have a combined thickness of no greater than about 60 Å.
- 15. The magnetic recording medium of claim 12, further comprising an underlayer on the substrate and the magnetic layer on the underlayer.
- 16. The magnetic recording medium of claim 12, wherein the protective overcoat comprises carbon.
- 17. The magnetic recording medium of claim 12, wherein the fluoropolyether topcoat comprises a crosslinked elastomeric perfluoropolyalkylether.
- 18. The magnetic recording medium of claim 12, wherein the protective overcoat comprises an amorphous carbon layer having a thickness of no greater than about 25 Å and wherein the elastomeric fluoropolyether topcoat lubricant is directly on the amorphous carbon layer.
- 19. The magnetic recording medium of claim 18 having a CSS stiction of less than about 1.5 grams.
- 20. A magnetic recording medium, comprising:
a magnetic layer; and means for lubricating the magnetic recording medium.
