Claims
- 1. A method for actuating a syringe having a barrel with a proximal end for containing a supply of fluid, an outlet tip at the proximal end of the barrel, and a plunger slidably disposed within the barrel for movement between a withdrawn position and an inserted position, the plunger having an actuation portion extending distally from the barrel to a distal end, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a grommet assembly attached to first and second elastic straps, the first strap being attached to a first end cap and the second strap being attached to a second end cap, the first end cap having a distal end;
- (b) seating the grommet assembly around the outlet tip;
- (c) with the actuation portion in the withdrawn position, and with the flow of fluid from the outlet tip obstructed, stretching the first strap distally along the length of the barrel and the actuation portion, and engaging the first end cap against the distal end of the actuation portion;
- (d) stretching the second strap distally along the length of the barrel and the actuation portion, and engaging the second end cap against the distal end of the first end cap; and
- (e) removing the obstruction to fluid flow.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the actuation portion terminates in a disc-shaped thumb rest, and wherein the step of stretching the first strap includes engaging the first end cap against the thumb rest.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the distal end of the first end cap terminates in a substantially disc-shaped fitting, and wherein the step of stretching the second strap includes engaging the second end cap against the disc-shaped fitting.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the disc-shaped fitting has a diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the thumb rest.
- 5. A device for actuating a syringe having a barrel for containing a supply of fluid, an outlet tip at the proximal end of the barrel, and a plunger slidably disposed within the barrel for movement between a withdrawn position and an inserted position, the plunger having an actuation portion extending distally from the barrel to a distal end, the device comprising:
- a grommet assembly that is removably engageable with the outlet tip;
- first and second elastomeric elements attached to the grommet assembly;
- a first end cap attached to the first elastomeric element; and
- a second end cap attached to the second elastomeric element, the second end cap being located and configured so as to be engageable against the first end cap;
- whereby, when the first elastomeric element is pulled distally, when the grommet assembly is engaged with the outlet tip, the first end cap is engageable against the distal end of the actuation portion; and
- whereby, when the second elastomeric element is pulled distally, when the grommet assembly is engaged with the outlet tip, and when the first end cap is engaged against the distal end of the actuation portion, the second end cap is engageable against the first end cap.
- 6. The device of claim 5, wherein each of the first and second elastomeric elements includes an elastic strap having a pair of ends attached to the grommet assembly; wherein the first end cap is attached approximately to the middle of the length of the elastic strap of the first elastomeric element; and wherein the second end cap is attached approximately to the middle of the length of the elastic strap of the second elastomeric element.
- 7. The device of claim 6, wherein each of the first and second end caps includes a handle portion.
- 8. The device of claim 7, wherein the handle portion of the first end cap includes a substantially disc-shaped fitting, located and dimensioned to be received in the second end cap.
- 9. The device of claim 8, wherein the distal end of the actuation portion includes a substantially disc-shaped thumb rest, and wherein the disc-shaped fitting is approximately the same diameter as the thumb rest.
- 10. The device of claim 5, wherein each of the first and second end caps includes a handle portion.
- 11. The device of claim 10, wherein the handle portion of the first end cap includes a substantially disc-shaped fitting, located and dimensioned to be received in the second end cap.
- 12. The device of claim 11, wherein the distal end of the actuation portion includes a substantially disc-shaped thumb rest, and wherein the disc-shaped fitting is approximately the same diameter as the thumb rest.
- 13. A device for actuating a syringe having a barrel with a proximal end for containing a supply of fluid, an outlet tip at the proximal end of the barrel, and a plunger slidably disposed within the barrel for movement between a withdrawn position and an inserted position, the plunger having an actuation portion extending distally from the barrel and terminating in a substantially disc-shaped thumb rest, the device comprising:
- a grommet assembly that is removably engageable with the outlet tip;
- first and second elastic straps, each having a pair of ends attached to the grommet assembly;
- a first end cap attached approximately to the middle of the length of the first elastic strap, the first end cap having a handle portion with a distal end terminating in a substantially disc-shaped fitting; and
- a second end cap attached approximately to the middle of the length of the second elastic strap and having a handle portion;
- whereby, when the first elastic strap is pulled distally, when the grommet assembly is engaged with the outlet tip, the first end cap is engageable against the thumb rest; and
- whereby, when the second elastic strap is pulled distally, when the grommet assembly is engaged with the outlet tip, and when the first end cap is engaged against the thumb rest, the second end cap is engageable against the disc-shaped fitting.
- 14. The device of claim 13, wherein the substantially disc-shaped fitting has a diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the thumb rest.
