Claims
- 1.-20. (canceled)
- 21. (new) An electric clamp apparatus, comprising:
a housing; at least one electric motor mounted to the housing, the at least one electric motor having a motor axis; a threaded screw entirely enclosed within said housing, wherein the screw has first and second ends and a screw axis extending therebetween, wherein the screw axis is parallel to the motor axis; coupling means for coupling the screw and said electric motor such that operation of the electric motor translates said screw linearly along said screw axis; an output shaft coupled to the second end of the screw, wherein the output shaft has a mounting portion for a movable element; and a control circuit for the at least one electric motor, wherein the control circuit is located within the housing and electrically coupled to the at least one electric motor.
- 22. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 21, and further comprising a bearing within the housing that supports the screw.
- 23. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 21, wherein the motor axis and the axis of rotation of the screw are coaxial.
- 24. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 23, wherein said at least one electric motor comprises a linear actuator.
- 25. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 21, wherein said motor has a motor shaft and wherein said coupling means comprises:
a first sprocket mounted on said motor shaft; a second sprocket radially spaced apart from the first sprocket; a drive belt engaging and extending between the first and second sprockets; a ball nut mounted to the second sprocket for rotation therewith; wherein the screw extends axially through the ball nut such that the screw is advanced and retreated by rotation of the ball nut hub.
- 26. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 21, wherein said coupling means comprises a helical coupling.
- 27. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 21, and further comprising a clamp arm mounted to said mounting portion of the output shaft and a linkage coupling the output shaft and the threaded screw.
- 28. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 21, wherein the housing has an exterior, the electric clamp apparatus further comprising:
at least one input device mounted at the exterior of the housing, wherein said at least one input device is coupled to the control circuit to provide an input indication.
- 29. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 28, wherein the at least one input device comprises at least one manually manipulable switch.
- 30. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 28, wherein the at least one input device includes a first input device that, when activated, instructs the control circuit to learn a limit position of the output shaft.
- 31. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 28, wherein the at least one input device includes a position input that, when activated, instructs the control circuit to move the output shaft.
- 32. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 21, and further comprising a position sensor coupled to said control circuit to provide clamp position feedback to the control circuit.
- 33. (new) A system comprising:
a plurality of electric clamps in accordance with claim 21; and a central controller electrically coupled to and controlling all of said plurality of electric clamps.
- 34. (new) An electric clamp apparatus, comprising:
a housing; at least one electric motor mounted to the housing, wherein the at least one electric motor has a rotor that rotates about a motor axis; a threaded screw entirely enclosed within said housing, wherein the screw has first and second ends and a screw axis extending therebetween, wherein the screw axis is parallel to the motor axis; a rotatable element defining a threaded opening through which the threaded screw passes; a coupling that couples said rotatable element and said at least one electric motor such that rotation of the rotor causes the rotatable element to rotate about the screw axis and linearly displace the screw along the screw axis; an output shaft coupled to the second end of the screw, wherein the output shaft has a mounting portion for a movable element; and a control circuit for the at least one electric motor, wherein the control circuit is located within the housing and electrically coupled to the at least one electric motor.
- 35. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 34, and further comprising a bearing within the housing supporting the screw.
- 36. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 34, wherein the motor axis and the axis of rotation of the screw are coaxial.
- 37. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 36, wherein said at least one electric motor comprises a linear actuator.
- 38. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 34, wherein that at least one electric motor has a motor shaft, and wherein said the coupling comprises:
a first sprocket mounted on said motor shaft; a second sprocket radially spaced apart from the first sprocket and attached to the rotatable element for rotation therewith; and a drive belt engaging and extending between the first and second sprockets, such that the second sprocket and rotatable element are rotated by the drive belt in response to rotation of the first sprocket by the at least one electric motor.
- 39. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 34, and further comprising a clamp arm mounted to said mounting portion of the output shaft and a linkage coupling the output shaft and the threaded screw.
- 40. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 34, wherein the housing has an exterior, the electric clamp apparatus further comprising:
at least one input device mounted at the exterior of the housing, wherein said at least one input device is coupled to the control circuit to provide an input indication.
- 41. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 40, wherein the at least one input device comprises at least one manually manipulable switch.
- 42. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 40, wherein the at least one input device includes a first input device that, when activated, instructs the control circuit to learn a limit position of the output shaft.
- 43. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 40, wherein the at least one input device includes a position input that, when activated, instructs the control circuit to move the output shaft.
- 44. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 34, and further comprising a position sensor coupled to said control circuit to provide clamp position feedback to the control circuit.
- 45. (new) A system comprising;
a plurality of electric clamps in accordance with claim 34; and a central controller electrically coupled to and controlling all of said plurality of electric clamps.
- 46. (new) An electric clamp apparatus, comprising:
a housing; at least one electric motor mounted to the housing, wherein the at least one electric motor has a motor shaft that rotates about a motor axis in response to operation of the at least one electric motor; a threaded screw entirely enclosed within said housing, wherein the screw has first and second ends and a screw axis extending therebetween, wherein the screw axis is parallel to the motor shaft; a rotatable element supported within the housing and having threads engaging threads of the threaded screw; a coupling that couples rotation of the motor shaft to the rotatable element such that operation of the at least one electric motor causes the rotatable element to rotate and linearly displace the screw along the screw axis; an output shaft coupled to the second end of the screw, wherein the output shaft has a mounting portion for a movable element; and a control circuit for the at least one electric motor, wherein the control circuit is located within the housing and electrically coupled to the at least one electric motor.
- 47. (new) An electric clamp apparatus, comprising:
a housing; at least one motor mounted to the housing and having a drive shaft and a drive sprocket coupled to the drive shaft for rotation therewith; a center sprocket radially spaced apart from the drive sprocket; a drive belt engaging and extending between the drive sprocket and the center sprocket; a ball nut mounted to the center sprocket for rotation therewith; a ball screw extending axially through the ball nut such that the ball screw is advanced and retreated by rotation of the ball nut, wherein the ball screw is entirely enclosed within the housing; an output shaft and a linkage linking the ball screw to the output shaft, said output shaft having a mounting portion for a clamp arm at least partially external to the housing; and a control circuit located within the housing for controlling the at least one motor.
- 48. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 47, wherein the at least one motor comprises a pair of electric motors, each having a drive shaft and a drive sprocket, wherein the center sprocket is located between the drive sprockets.
- 49. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 47, further comprising a clamp arm attached to the output shaft and at least partially external to the housing.
- 50. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 49, further comprising a sensor that provides a signal to the control circuit indicative of a current position of the clamp arm.
- 51. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 50, wherein the sensor comprises an encoder and wherein the signal provided to the control circuit is indicative of a rotational position of the drive shaft.
- 52. (new) An electric clamp apparatus, comprising:
a housing; an electric motor mounted to the housing; a lead screw extending axially through the electric motor such that the lead screw is advanced and retreated by the electric motor and the electric motor and the lead screw are coaxial, wherein the lead screw is entirely enclosed within the housing; an output shaft coupled to the lead screw, said output shaft having a mounting portion for a clamp arm that permits the clamp arm to be at least partially external to the housing; and a control circuit located within the housing for controlling the electric motor.
- 53. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 52, further comprising a clamp arm attached to the output shaft and a linkage coupling the output shaft and the lead screw.
- 54. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 53, wherein the linkage further comprises a piston mounted in a chamber within the housing, the piston being coupled to the lead screw and the output shaft, such that movement of the lead screw by the electric motor moves the piston axially within the chamber which moves the output shaft through a range of motion.
- 55. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 53, further comprising a sensor that provides a signal to the control circuit indicative of a current position of the clamp arm.
- 56. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 55, wherein the sensor comprises an encoder and wherein the signal provided to the control circuit is indicative of a rotational position of the electric motor.
- 57. (new) An electric clamp apparatus, comprising:
a housing; an electric motor mounted to the housing and having a drive shaft with an axis; a ball nut hub coupled to the drive shaft for rotation therewith; a ball screw extending axially through the ball nut hub such that the ball screw is advanced and retreated by rotation of the ball nut hub, wherein the ball screw is entirely enclosed within the housing; a chamber located in the housing and coaxial with the ball screw; a piston located in the chamber, the piston being coupled to the ball screw such that movement of the ball screw by the electric motor moves the piston axially within the chamber; an output shaft having a linkage coupled to the piston for movement therewith, and a mounting portion for a movable element to permit the movable element to be at least partially external to the housing; and a control circuit located within the housing for controlling the at least one motor.
- 58. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 57, further comprising a clamp arm attached to the output shaft.
- 59. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 58, further comprising a sensor that provides a signal to the control circuit indicative of a current position of the clamp arm.
- 60. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 59, wherein the sensor comprises an encoder coupled to the drive shaft via a set of gears, and wherein the signal provided to the control circuit is indicative of a rotational position of the drive shaft.
- 61. (new) The electric clamp apparatus of claim 56, further comprising:
one or more electrical switches mounted on the housing that actuate the motor to drive the output shaft toward at least one of a clamped position and an unclamped position.
