Claims
- 1. An apparatus to measure electric fields in a borehole, comprising insulative drill collars in an electrically conductive drillstring and there being insulated wireline means which is electrically connected lengthwise across said insulated drill collars, via upper and lower electrical connections, there being generating means including pulser means to generate said electric fields, there being upper and lower instrument housings associated with said electrical connections which are in part located within said housings, said housings supported within the drill string, the upper housing projecting above at least one of the insulating drill collars, and the lower housing projecting below said one insulating collar, said pulser means located within one of the housings.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said connections have spacing lengthwise of the drillstring, and the spacing of said connections being greater than the length of one drill collar.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 including a drill bit at the lower end of the drill string, and said connections are located at substantial distances above the said drill bit.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 including means for supplying an electrical signal for transmission between said connections and within the underground formation about the drill string.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 including means for detection of resulting signal transmission through said underground formation.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said substantial distances are sufficient that said detection is effectual during operation of the drill bit to drill into the downhole formation.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 4 including an electrical power source in the drill string at a substantial distance above the drill bit at the lower end of the string, said power source being in electrical communication with said connections for supplying said electrical signal thereto.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said means comprises multiple surface transmitter electrodes connected in a configuration to effect signal transmission downwardly to a downhole signal receiver, via a signal transmission path, a portion of which includes the underground formation.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 including means to effect transmission to the surface of measurable information received by said downhole receiver.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said information includes one or more measurable parameters.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 8 including in-borehole electronic circuitry controlled by said downward signal transmission.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said circuitry includes an electrical connection to the casing of a well.
- 13. An apparatus for borehole electric field telemetry having an electrical pulse producing means for producing short duration pulse wave forms, at least one insulative collar connected between pipe string sections, upper and lower housings for elements of upper and lower electrical connections to the pipe string, the upper housing being located above the insulative collar and the lower housing located below the collar, the upper and lower housings supported within the pipe string, and the pulse producing means located within at least one of the housings.
