Claims
- 1. An electrical apparatus comprising:a chamber; a conductor in the chamber; and a dielectric coolant surrounding the conductor, wherein the dielectric coolant consists essentially of: about 1 to about 99 weight percent alphaolefin oligomers with carbon chain lengths of C6 to C12 and, about 1 to about 99 weight percent of a compound selected from the group consisting of: (a) polyols esterified with linear or branched alkyl groups with chain lengths of C5 to C20, and (b) triglycerides.
- 2. An electrical apparatus comprising:an enclosure; a core and coil assembly in the enclosure; and a dielectric coolant surrounding the core and coil assembly, wherein the coolant consists essentially of a polyalphaolefin and a polyol ester, said polyalphaolefin being selected from the group consisting of oligomers of C6, C8, C10 and C12 alphaolefins.
- 3. The electrical apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said polyol ester is selected from the group consisting of neopentyl glycol, trimethylolpropane, and pentaerithritol.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein said triglyceride comprises a naturally occurring vegetable oil.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the mixture further comprises at least one of an antioxidant and a pour point depressant.
- 6. A method of making a transformer comprising a chamber enclosing a core and coil assembly, the method comprising filling the chamber with a dielectric coolant comprising a mixture of:a polyalphaolefin; and one of a polyol ester and a triglyceride.
- 7. A method of filling a transformer with a coolant, wherein the transformer comprises a chamber enclosing a core and coil assembly, the method comprising:drying the chamber; and filling the chamber with a dielectric coolant fluid comprising a mixture of: a polyalphaolefin; and one of a polyol ester and a triglyceride.
- 8. The electrical apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the coolant consists essentially of:about 1 to about 99 weight percent of a polyalphaolefin with a viscosity of about 2 cS at 100° C., about 1 to about 99 weight percent of said polyol ester, and about 0 to about 1 weight percent of an antioxidant.
- 9. The electrical apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the coolant consists essentially of:about 45 to about 55 weight percent of a polyalphaolefin with a viscosity of about 2 cS at 100° C., about 55 to about 45 weight percent of said polyol ester, and about 0.3 weight percent of an antioxidant.
- 10. The electrical apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the coolant further comprises a diepoxide.
- 11. The electrical apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the coolant further comprises an antioxidant.
- 12. The electrical apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said polyol ester comprises an alkyl group having a chain length from C8 to C10.
- 13. The electrical apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the coolant further comprises a pour point depressant.
- 14. The electrical apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the branching location is at an alpha position of said alkyl group.
- 15. An electrical apparatus comprising:a chamber; a conductor in the chamber; and a dielectric coolant surrounding the conductor, wherein the coolant consists essentially of a polyalphaolefin with a triglyceride, said polyalphaolefin being selected from the group consisting of oligomers of C6, C8, C10 and C12 alphaolefins.
- 16. The electrical apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the mixture comprises:about 45 to about 55 weight percent of a polyalphaolefin with a viscosity of about 2 cS at 100° C., about 55 to about 45 weight percent of said polyol ester, and about 0.3 weight percent of an antioxidant.
- 17. The electrical apparatus according to claim 2, further comprising a diepoxide.
- 18. The electrical apparatus according to claim 2, further comprising an antioxidant.
- 19. The electrical apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the coolant further comprises an antioxidant.
- 20. The electrical apparatus according to claim 2, further comprising a pour point depressant.
- 21. The electrical apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the pour point depressant is polymethacrylate.
- 22. An electrical apparatus comprising:a chamber; a conductor in the chamber; and a dielectric coolant surrounding the conductor, wherein the coolant comprises a mixture of a polyalphaolefin with a triglyceride, said polyalphaolefin being selected from the group consisting of oligomers of C6, C8, C10 and C12 alphaolefins.
- 23. An electrical apparatus comprising:a chamber; a conductor in the chamber; and a dielectric coolant surrounding the conductor, wherein the dielectric coolant consists essentially of: about 1 to about 60 weight percent alphaolefin oligomers with carbon chain lengths of C6 to C12 and about 40 to about 99 weight percent of a compound selected from the group consisting of: (a) polyols esterified with linear or branched alkyl groups with chain lengths of C5 to C20, and (b) triglycerides.
- 24. A method of cooling a transformer with a core and coil assembly, comprising surrounding the core and coil assembly with a fluid consisting essentially of:a polyalphaolefin; and one of a polyol ester and a triglyceride.
- 25. The electrical apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said triglyceride is selected from the group consisting of soya oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, olive oil, safflower oil, jojoba oil, lesquerella oil and combinations thereof.
- 26. The electrical apparatus according to claim 15, further comprising an antioxidant.
- 27. The electrical apparatus according to claim 19, wherein the antioxidant is selected from the group consisting of TBHQ, BHA, BHT and DBPC.
- 28. The method according to claim 24, wherein the fluid further comprises at least one of an antioxidant and a pour point depressant.
- 29. A method of making a transformer comprising a chamber enclosing a core and coil assembly, the method comprising filling the chamber with a dielectric coolant consisting essentially of:a polyalphaolefin; and one of a polyol ester and a triglyceride.
- 30. A method of filling a transformer with a coolant, wherein the transformer comprises a chamber enclosing a core and coil assembly, the method comprising:drying the chamber; and filling the chamber with a dielectric coolant consisting essentially of: a polyalphaolefin; and one of a polyol ester and a triglyceride.
