Claims
- 1. An electrical connector for connection to a device or a second connector comprising a housing having a front surface and a rear surface and a contact passageway which extends from said front surface to said rear surface for housing a contact therein for engaging a mating contact of a device or a second connector and which includes a groove, a contact arranged in said contact passageway which includes a protrusion which engages said groove to support said contact in said contact passageway, said housing including a locking tab which engages an aperture in said contact to hold said contact in said passageway, a grommet arranged adjacent said rear surface of said housing and having an opening for receiving said contact, a secondary lock having a face and at least one shelf extending from said face for holding said contact in said passageway, said secondary lock being selectively attachable to said front surface of said housing in a first, preload position and a second, locking position wherein when said secondary lock is in the locking position, said shelf defines a cavity wall for supporting said contact in said contact passageway and for separating said contact passageway from an adjacent contact passageway, and a backplate attached to said housing adjacent said grommet such that said grommet is compressed between said backplate and said housing to form a relatively weather resistant seal and said backplate having an opening for receiving said contact.
- 2. The invention as in claim 1 wherein said rear surface of said housing includes a post and said grommet includes a recess which mates with said post, said post and said grommet having a mating relationship such that said grommet can be mated to said rear surface in only one specific orientation.
- 3. The invention as in claim 1 further including a bolt positioned in a bolt aperture in said housing for attaching said connector to a device or second connector.
- 4. The invention as in claim 1 wherein said secondary lock has a plurality of shelves extending from said face.
- 5. The invention as in claim 1 wherein said opening in said backplate includes a groove which is complementary to said groove in said contact passageway, said groove in said contact passageway, said groove in said backplate opening and said protrusion being adapted such that a contact can be inserted into said opening and said passageway in only one specific orientation.
- 6. The invention as in claim 1 wherein said housing includes a plurality of said contact passageways.
- 7. The invention as in claim 6 wherein said backplate has a plurality of said openings.
- 8. The invention as in claim 2 wherein said recess in said grommet has a specific configuration and said post on said rear surface of said housing has a mating configuration.
- 9. The invention as in claim 2 wherein said recess has a specific location on said grommet and said post has a mating location on said rear surface of said housing.
- 10. The invention as in claim 1 further comprising a splash guard.
- 11. An electrical connector for connection to a device or second connector comprising a housing having a front surface and a rear surface and a contact passageway which extends from said front surface to said rear surface for housing a contact therein for engaging a mating contact of a device or a second connector, a contact arranged in said contact passageway, a locking tab movable between a retracted position wherein the locking tab permits movement of said contact in said contact passageway and an engaged position wherein said locking tab prevents movement of the contact relative to the contact passageway, wherein the locking tab moves into the engaged position upon insertion of the said contact into said contact passageway, and a tool, the tool being insertable in said contact passageway and engageable with said locking tab so as to move said locking tab into said retracted position, said tool being mountable to said connector in a stored position.
- 12. The invention as in claim 11 further including a backplate adjacent said housing and having an opening for receiving a contact.
- 13. The invention as in claim 12 wherein said backplate includes a slot and said tool is mountable in said slot in said stored position.
- 14. The invention as in claim 13 wherein said tool frictionally engages said slot in said stored position.
- 15. The invention as in claim 13 wherein a retention mechanism maintains said tool in said stored position in said slot.
- 16. The invention as in claim 15 wherein said retention mechanism includes a ramp.
- 17. The invention as in claim 11 wherein said tool includes a groove which facilitates removal of said tool from said stored position.
- 18. The invention as in claim 11 wherein said tool has a ramp portion which engages a complementary ramp portion on said locking tab when said tool is moved into engagement with said locking tab.
- 19. The invention as in claim 11 wherein the tool is mountable to said housing in said stored position.
- 20. The invention as in claim 11 wherein the locking tab is arranged on said housing.
- 21. The invention as in claim 20 wherein the locking tab engages an aperture in said contact in said engaged position.
