Claims
- 1. An electrical device comprising a plurality of elements that communicate with each other using packets of information addressed to individual ones of the plurality of elements.
- 2. The electrical device of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a camera.
- 3. The electrical device of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a radio.
- 4. The electrical device of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a television.
- 5. The electrical device of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a telephone.
- 6. The electrical device of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a kitchen appliance.
- 7. The electrical device of claim 1, further comprising a mass storage, wherein at least one of the plurality of elements is a logical disk segment.
- 8. The electrical device of claim 1, further comprising at least one of a keyboard, a display screen, an audio input and an audio output.
- 9. The electrical device of claim 1, further comprising a keyboard, a display screen, an audio input, and an audio output, and a mass storage.
- 10. The electrical device of claim 1, wherein at least two of the elements contain functionality to communicate with each other using the packets through a public package-switched network.
- 11. The electrical device of claim 1, wherein at least two of the elements communicate with each other using the packets across a distance of at least three meters.
- 12. The electrical device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of elements contain functionality to communicate with each other without using a native (local) bus.
- 13. The electrical device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of elements contain functionality to communicate with each other using a native (local) bus virtualized by IP.
- 14. The electrical device of claim 1, further comprising wireless functionality such that at least some of the packets are carried across a wireless network.
- 15. The electrical device of claim 1, wherein at least two of the elements contain functionality to communicate with each other using a peer-to-peer protocol.
- 16. An element that has its own IP address, and communicates using packets of information that are addressed using that IP address.
- 17. The element of claim 16, further containing a data storage medium that forms part of a physical segment of a mass storage device.
- 18. The element of claim 16, further comprising a connector configured to mate with a physical bus of a computer.
- 19. The element of claim 16, further comprising a connector configured to mate with a physical bus of a device having a tactual human interface.
- 20. The element of claim 16, further comprising a connection to a wireless network.
- 21. The element of claim 16, wherein the element is at least one of a tuner, and a signal decoder.
- 22. An adapter that includes a functionality that allows an element to execute an internetworking protocol, and be addressed by its own IP address.
- 23. A personal video recorder system comprising a plurality of elements including a human interface, a tuner, a decoder, and a storage device, wherein each of the elements is assigned its own IP address, and is adapted to send and receive IP packets and to communicate with one or more of the other elements via such IP packets.
- 24. The system of claim 23 further comprising a second human interface element which is also adapted to send and receive IP packets and to communicate with the other elements of the system via such IP packets.
