1. Field of the Invention
The invention relates to an electrical connector and, more particularly, to an electrical connector which is attached to a structure or member.
2. Brief Description of Prior Developments
In residential housing, grounding of electrical service equipment, such as an electrical meter socket enclosure and an electrical equipment enclosure (such as a circuit breaker box), is provided. Intersystem bonding termination can be provided for services such as telephone, television, security systems, and network-powered broadband communications systems (NPBCS) cable for example. In the United States of America, a new article of the National Electric Code (NEC), Article 250.94, provides a standard regarding intersystem bonding termination. The termination needs to be accessible for connection and inspection, have the capacity for not less than 3 conductors, and shall not interfere with opening a service or metering equipment enclosure. Eritech, Ilsco and Greaves sell different types of intersystem bonding termination connectors.
There is a desire to provide a new type of intersystem bonding termination connector which can be connected to either electrical service equipment, such as an electrical meter socket enclosure and an electrical equipment enclosure (such as a circuit breaker box), or another structure, such as the exterior side of a house for example. There is also a desire to provide a new type of intersystem bonding termination connector which can be reconfigured to be used in different locations or applications.

The connector assembly 10, in this embodiment, is an electrical ground connector. The connector assembly 10 can be used to provide intersystem bonding termination such as for telephone, television, security systems, and network-powered broadband communications systems (NPBCS) cable at residences for example. In a preferred embodiment the connector assembly 10 fulfills the standard of Article 250.94 of the U.S. National Electric Code (NEC). Thus, in this example embodiment the structure 12 could be a metal housing member of an electrical meter socket enclosure located on the exterior side of a residence, or an electrical equipment enclosure (such as a circuit breaker box) for example.
The connector assembly 10 generally comprises a bus bar 14 and a combined electrical connection and mounting post assembly 16. The bus bar 14 comprises a frame 18 and set screws 20. The frame 18 is a one-piece member comprised of electrically conductive metal. However, the frame 18 could comprise more than one member. The frame 18 comprises a middle with an aperture 22 and wire receiving holes 24 on opposite sides of the aperture 22. Threaded screw holes 26 intersect with the wire receiving holes 24. The set screws 20 are screwed into the threaded screw holes 26. The set screws 20 can clamp electrical wires or intersystem bonding conductors 4 (see
The combined electrical connection and mounting post assembly 16 generally comprises a post member or post connector 28, a pressure assembly 30, and a fastener 32. The post connector 28 comprises a one-piece member made of electrically conductive material, such as metal. However, the post connector 28 could comprise more than one member. A first end 34 of the post connector 28 has a slot 36 and arms 38. The arms 38 are located on opposite sides of the slot 36 and have exterior sides with screw threads. The slot 36 is sized and shaped to receive a portion of an electrical conductor 2 (see
A second end 40 of the post connector 28 is sized and shaped to connect to the fastener 32. In this embodiment the second end 40 has threads and the fastener 32 is a threaded nut. Thus, the nut 32 can be screwed onto the second end 40. However, in an alternate embodiment any suitable type of connection of the fastener 32 to the post connector 28 could be provided. A middle section 58 of the post connector 28 has a hexagon outer perimeter shape to facilitate holding the post connector 28 stationary when the fastener 32 is attached and when the pressure assembly 30 is attached. However, any suitable shape could be provided.
The pressure assembly 30 generally comprises a pressure bar 42 and a fastener 44. The fastener 44 has a general threaded nut shape and is sized and shaped to screw onto the arms 38 of the post connector 28. The pressure bar 42 is rotatably connected to the fastener 40 inside the center aperture of the fastener. The pressure bar 42 is sized and shaped to longitudinally slide in the slot 36 as the fastener 44 screws onto the arms 38. A bottom end 46 of the pressure bar 42 is configured to press the conductor 2 against the clamping surface 48 of the post connector 28 to mechanically and electrically connect the conductor to the first end 34.
The first end 34 and the pressure assembly 30 form a connection section 31 for connecting the electrical conductor to the assembly 16. However, in alternate embodiments, a different structure or configuration could be provided for this purpose. In an alternate embodiment, the slot 38, arms 38 and pressure assembly 30 could be replaced by an alternative type of conductor attachment mechanism.
In this embodiment the assembly 10 also comprises a plate 50, a washer 52, and a gasket or seal 54. Referring also to
The assembly 10 is connected to the structure 12 with the post connector 28 extending through the hole 56. More specifically, the plate 50 is located at an exterior side of the structure 12, and the washer 52 and seal 54 are located at the interior side of the structure 12. The post connector 28 extends through holes in the plate 50, washer 52, and seal 54. The second end 40 of the post connector 28 is sized and shaped to pass through the aperture 22 in the bus bar frame 18. With the plate 50 between the bus bar frame 18 and the exterior side of the structure 12, when the fastener 32 is screwed onto the post connector 28, the members 18, 50, 52, 54 are sandwiched together between the fastener 32 and the bottom side of the middle section 58 in a fixed, stationary assembly on the structure 12 at the hole 56.
As shown in the figures, the main ground conductor 2 can be attached to the assembly 10 with the connection at 31 located inside the structure 12. The structure 12 has a hole 33 to allow the conductor 2 to pass out of the structure for connection to the ground outside a house for example. The bus bar 14 can have the intersystem bonding conductors 4 separately connected thereto outside of the structure 12. Thus, the structure 12 does not need to be opened to connect the wires 4 to the conductor 2 and to ground. The assembly 10 also electrically connects the structure 12 to the conductor 2 and, thus, to ground.

The main difference between the assembly 10 as configured in the first configurations shown in
In the second configuration, the fastener 32 is located at the inward facing side of the plate 50 such that the frame 18 and plate 50 can be sandwiched between the fastener 32 and the middle section 58. The structure 13 in this example is the exterior side of a house. Thus, the plate 50 can be fixedly, stationarily attached to the exterior side of a house directly by the screws 66. The main ground conductor 2 can be attached to the assembly 16 by the pressure assembly 30. The intersystem ground conductors 4 can be separately connected to the bus bar 14 by the set screws 20. In an alternate embodiment, the hole 60 could be threaded to screw onto the threaded second end 40 of the post connector 28. Thus, the fastener 32 might not be needed in this second configuration.
One embodiment of the invention can provide a dual function grounding and bonding connector device. The first function allows the connector to become an interface between the ground wire on the inside of a metal electrical enclosure and the intersystem ground wires on the outside of the enclosure. The second function allows the same device to be alternatively mounted directly to a structure, such as a wall of a residential building for example, and allows a connection between the ground electrode connector and intersystem ground wires. The embodiment can be designed to also meet the requirements of 2008 NEC article 250.94.

Similar to the embodiment shown in
The main ground conductor 2 can be attached to the assembly 72 with the connection located inside the structure 12. The bus bar 14′ can have the intersystem bonding conductors 4 separately connected thereto outside of the structure 12. Thus, the structure 12 does not need to be opened to connect the wire 4 to the conductor 2 and to ground. The assembly 72 also electrically connects the structure 12 to the conductor 2 and, thus, to ground.
