Claims
- 1. An electrically heated catalytic converter comprising a heater consisting of a structure having an open porosity so as to permit fluid to flow therethrough, a heterogeneous catalyst disposed within said structure so as to be heated therein, and means for supplying sufficient electrical energy to said structure to satisfy the activation energy for a particular catalytic reaction to be performed by said catalytic converter.
- 2. A catalytic converter according to claim 1, wherein said structure comprises a body consisting of an electrical semiconductor material.
- 3. A catalytic converter according to claim 1, wherein said structure includes a catalyst material.
- 4. A catalytic converter according to claim 1, wherein said catalytic converter is arranged in an exhaust gas duct.
- 5. A catalytic converter according to claim 1, wherein said open porosity structure consists of a solid body provided with through pores permitting passage of gases.
- 6. A catalytic converter according to claim 1, wherein said catalytic converter is installed in a heating system so as to serve as a burner.
- 7. A method of operating a catalytic converter including a heterogeneous catalyst, comprising the steps of: providing a heater having a structure with an open porosity forming passages in which said heterogeneous catalyst is disposed,
catalyzing a chemical reaction utilizing said catalyst, and supplying an activation energy as required to catalyze said chemical reaction to said heater such that only a catalytic reaction, but no combustion takes place.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, wherein said method steps are performed in an exhaust gas duct.
- 9. A method according to claim 8, wherein said exhaust gas duct is the exhaust system of a motor vehicle.
- 10. A method according to claim 9, wherein contaminants are removed from said exhaust gas by a catalytic oxidation.
