Claims
- 1. A control device for an appliance comprising:
- a power source having an alternating electrical current with a repeating voltage wave cycle and a repeating current wave cycle;
- a relay having normally open contacts and a coil for closing said contacts only when said coil is energized;
- an electrical circuit connecting said power source to a load through said relay only when said contacts are closed by said coil; and
- a control circuit for causing said coil to close said contacts substantially at a certain point on said voltage wave cycle so that a current flow through said contacts at each closing thereof is substantially at a desired level comprising at least:
- energizing means for connecting said coil with said power source at substantially a desired lead point on said voltage wave cycle so as to tend to cause said contacts to close substantially at said certain point on said voltage wave cycle each time said load is connected to said power source whereby a lag time period exists between said desired lead point and said certain point;
- counting means to sense said lag time period; and
- feedback means connected to said counting means to automatically adjust said desired lead point should said sensed lag time period on a certain previous cycle of operation fail to cause said contacts to close substantially at said certain point in order to tend to cause said contacts to close substantially at said certain point during future cycles of operation.
- 2. A control device according to claim 1, wherein said counting means comprises an oscillator.
- 3. A control device according to claim 1, wherein said control circuit comprises a microprocessor.
- 4. A control device according to claim 3, wherein said counting means comprises a microprocessor system clock.
- 5. A control device for an appliance comprising:
- a power source having an alternating electrical current with a repeating voltage wave cycle and a repeating current wave cycle;
- a relay having a first set of normally open contacts and a coil for closing said first set of contacts;
- an electrical circuit connecting said power source to a load through said relay only when said first set of contacts are closed by said coil;
- a control circuit for causing said coil to close said first set of contacts substantially at a certain point on said voltage wave cycle so that a current flow through said first set of contacts at each closing thereof is substantially at a desired level; and
- a contact closing sensor connected to said control circuit and wherein said control circuit responsive to said contact closing sensor determines a lag time between a desired closing point and a sensed closing point.
- 6. A control device according to claim 5, wherein said contact closing sensor comprises:
- a second set of normally open contacts connected in parallel to said first set of contacts.
- 7. A control device according to claim 6, wherein said second set of contacts is mechanically connected to said first set of contacts.
- 8. A control device according to claim 6, wherein said second set of contacts provides a logic input to said contact closing sensor indicating whether said first set of contacts are open or closed.
- 9. A control device according to claim 6, wherein said first and second sets of contacts close substantially simultaneously.
- 10. A control device according to claim 6, wherein said relay comprises a biasing means.
- 11. A control device according to claim 10, wherein said biasing means biases said second set of contacts to -27 volts D.C.
- 12. A control device according to claim 10, wherein said biasing means provides a current load to said second set of contacts.
- 13. A control device according to claim 5, wherein said contact closing sensor comprises a noise filter circuit.
- 14. A control device according to claim 5, wherein said contact closing sensor comprises a transistor circuit for monitoring current in said coil.
- 15. A control device according to claim 14, wherein said transistor circuit comprises a peak sample and hold circuit.
- 16. A control device according to claim 5, wherein said contact closing sensor comprises an electronic monitoring circuit for monitoring voltage applied to said load.
- 17. A control device according to claim 16, wherein said electronic monitoring circuit comprises an isolator optically coupled to said load.
- 18. A control device according to claim 5, wherein said contact closing sensor comprises a current transformer connected in series with said load.
- 19. A control device according to claim 18, wherein said current transformer comprises a high frequency detector.
- 20. A control device according to claim 18, wherein said current transformer comprises an impulse detector.
- 21. A control device according to claim 5, wherein said contact closing sensor comprises a piezo-electric device.
- 22. A control device for an appliance comprising:
- a power source having an alternating electrical current with a repeating voltage wave cycle and a repeating current wave cycle;
- a relay having normally open contacts and a coil for closing said contacts only when said coil is energized;
- an electrical circuit connecting said power source to a load through said relay only when said contacts are closed by said coil;
- a control circuit for causing said coil to close said contacts substantially at a certain point on said voltage wave cycle so that a current flow through said contacts at each closing thereof is substantially at a desired level;
- an initializing circuit connected to said power source; and
- a contact closing sensor connected to said control circuit, wherein said control circuit determines a lag time period between a desired point and a sensed closing point, whereby said lag time is used by said control circuit to ensure timely closing of said contacts.
- 23. A method of operating a control circuit for an appliance comprising the steps of:
- determining a desired lead point on a voltage wave cycle of an alternating electrical current with a repeating voltage wave cycle and a repeating current wave cycle provided by a power source;
- energizing a coil of a relay having normally open contacts at substantially the desired lead point to connect the power source to a load only when said contacts are closed by said coil;
- sensing a lag time period between said desired lead point and a certain point on said voltage wave cycle where a current flow through said contacts at each closing thereof is substantially at a desired level;
- providing feedback to adjust said desired lead point should said lag time period on a certain previous cycle of operation fail to cause said contacts to close substantially at said certain point in order to tend to cause said contacts to close substantially at said certain point during future cycles of operation.
- 24. A method of operating a control device for an appliance according to claim 23 wherein the step sensing comprises using a contact closing sensor to sense said lag time period.
