Claims
- 1. A switch machine for moving railroad switch points including:
a switch stand having a rotatable hub, said switch stand adapted to be connected to the switch points; a rotary actuator having a rotatable shaft, said shaft adapted to be rotationally coupled to said hub of said switch stand, said shaft adapted to be selectively rotatable between a first position and a second position; a hydraulic pump in fluid communication with said rotary actuator; and a valve in fluid communication between said hydraulic pump and said rotary actuator for selectively controlling the direction of rotation of said shaft; whereby rotational movement of said shaft to said first position is adapted to rotate said hub of said switch stand and thereby move the switch points to a first switch point position, and rotational movement of said shaft to said second position is adapted to rotate said hub of said switch stand and thereby move the switch points to a second switch point position.
- 2. The switch machine of claim 1 wherein said switch stand includes a pivot shaft operatively connected to said hub such that rotation of said hub causes rotation of said pivot shaft, said pivot shaft adapted to be connected to the switch points.
- 3. The switch machine of claim 1 wherein said rotary actuator includes a tube, a rack located within said tube, and a pinion coupled to said rack, said tube being in fluid communication with said hydraulic pump, said rack being selectively linearly moveable in said tube such that linear movement of said rack causes rotational movement of said pinion, said pinion being coupled to said shaft for conjoint rotation with said shaft.
- 4. The switch machine of claim 1 including a coupler member attached to said shaft for conjoint rotation with said shaft, said coupler member rotationally coupling said shaft to said hub of said switch stand.
- 5. The switch machine of claim 4 wherein said coupler member includes a trip member.
- 6. The switch machine of claim 1 including a first sensor, said first sensor adapted to sense when said shaft of said rotary actuator is located in said first position.
- 7. The switch machine of claim 6 including a second sensor, said second sensor adapted to sense when said shaft of said rotary actuator is located in said second position.
- 8. The switch machine of claim 7 wherein said first sensor and said second sensor respectively comprise proximity sensors.
- 9. An operating apparatus for operating a railroad switch stand having a rotatable hub, said operating apparatus including:
a rotary actuator having a rotatable shaft, said shaft being selectively rotatable between a first position and a second position; a coupling member attached to said shaft of said rotary actuator for conjoint rotation with said shaft, said coupling member adapted to rotationally couple said shaft to the hub of the switch stand; a hydraulic pump in fluid communication with said rotary actuator for providing selective rotational movement of said shaft; and a first sensor adapted to be activated when said shaft is located in said first position; whereby when said first sensor is activated said first sensor deactivates said hydraulic pump.
- 10. The operating apparatus of claim 9 including a second sensor adapted to be activated when said shaft is located in said second position, said second sensor adapted to deactivate said hydraulic pump when said second sensor is activated.
- 11. The operating apparatus of claim 10 wherein said coupling member includes a trip member adapted to activate said first sensor when said shaft is located in said first position and to activate said second sensor when said shaft is located in said second position.
- 12. The operating apparatus of claim 10 wherein said first sensor and said second sensor respectively comprise proximity sensors.
- 13. The operating apparatus of claim 10 including a timer for timing when said first sensor is activated and when said second sensor is activated.
- 14. A method of operating a railroad switch stand having a hub that is selectively rotatable between a first position and a second position including the steps of:
providing an actuator for selectively rotating the hub between the first and second positions; providing a first sensor for sensing when the hub is located in the first position; providing a second sensor for sensing when the hub is located in the second position; selectively activating said actuator to selectively rotate the hub between the first and second positions; deactivating said actuator when said first sensor senses that the hub is located in the first position; and deactivating said actuator when said second sensor senses that the hub is located in the second position.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein said actuator attempts to rotate the hub to the first position if said actuator is unable to rotate the hub to the second position within a predetermined period of time.
- 16. The method of claim 14 wherein said actuator attempts to rotate the hub to the second position if said actuator is unable to rotate the hub to the first position within a predetermined period of time.
- 17. The method of claim 14 wherein said actuator is deactivated when said actuator is unable to rotate the hub to either the first position or the second position within a predetermined period of time.
