Claims
- 1. Electro-optical liquid crystal display
- having a realignment layer for realigning the liquid crystals whose field has a significant component parallel to the liquid crystal layer
- and which contains a liquid-crystalline medium of positive dielectric anisotropy, characterized in that the medium comprises at least one compound selected from the group of formulae Ia and Ib ##STR39## in which ##STR40## and R.sup.1 is H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having 1 to 15 carbon atoms which is unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may also, in each case independently of one another, be replaced by --O--, --S-- --CO--, --CO--O--, --O--CO-- or --O--CO--O-- in such a way, that O-atoms are not linked directly to one another,
- and at least one compound selected from the group of formulae IVa and IVb ##STR41## in which R.sup.5 is as defined for R.sup.1 and/or at least one compound of formula I which is different from the compounds of formulae Ia and Ib ##STR42## in which R.sup.1 is H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having 1 to 10 carbon atoms which is unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may also, in each case independently of one another, be replaced by --O--, --S--, ##STR43## --CO, --CO--O, --O--CO-- or --O--CO--O-- in such a way that O-atoms are not linked directly to one another,
- A.sup.1 and
- A.sup.2 are each, independently of one another, a
- (a) trans-1,4-cyclohexylene radical or 1,4-cyclohexenylene radical, in which, in addition, one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups may be replaced by --O-- and/or --S--,
- (b) 1,4-phenylene radical, in which, in addition, one or two CH-groups may be replaced by N,
- (c) radical from the group consisting of 1,4-dicyclo (2,2,2)octylene, piperidine-1,4-diyl, napthaline-2,6- diyl, decahydronaphthaline-2,6-diyl and 1,2,3,4,-tetrahydronaphthaline-2,6-diyl
- where the radicals (a) and (b) may be substituted by one two fluorine atoms,
- Z.sup.1 and
- Z.sup.2 are each, independently of one another, --CO--O--, --O--CO--, --CH.sub.2 O--, --OCH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH.dbd.CH--, --C.tbd.C--, or a single bond, or one of the radicals Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 is --(CH.sub.2).sub.4 -- or --CH.dbd.CH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- and
- m is 0, 1 or 2.
- 2. Electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 1, characterized in that it comprises at least one compound of formula I in which
- A.sup.1 is ##STR44## and A.sup.2 is ##STR45## Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are a single bond and m is 1.
- 3. Electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 1, characterized in that it comprises at least one compound of formula I in which
- A.sup.1 is ##STR46## and A.sup.2 is ##STR47##
- 4. Electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 2, characterized in that it comprises at least one compound of formula I in which A.sup.1 is ##STR48## and A.sup.2 is ##STR49##
- 5. Electrooptical crystal display according to claim 1, characterized in that compound of formula I in which A.sup.1 is ##STR50## and A.sup.2 is ##STR51##
- 6. Electrooptical crystal display according to claim 2, characterized in that compound of formula I in which A.sup.1 is ##STR52## and A.sup.2 is ##STR53##
- 7. An electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 1, which comprises at least one compound of formula Ia or Ib which is selected from the group of compounds consisting of: wherein C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 is a straight claim alkyl group with n C-atoms, wherein n=1-7.
- 8. An electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 2, which comprises at least one compound of Formula Ia or Ib which is selected from the group of compounds consisting of: ##STR54## wherein C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 is a straight chain alkyl group with n c-atoms, wherein n=1-7.
- 9. Electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 1, characterized in that the liquid crystalline medium has a dielectric anisotropy .DELTA..epsilon.>8.5.
- 10. Electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 2, characterized in that the liquid crystalline medium has a dielectric anisotropy .DELTA..epsilon.>8.5.
- 11. Electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 1, characterized in that the liquid crystalline medium contains at least one compound of formula III.
- R.sup.3 --(A.sup.5 --Z.sup.5).sub.o --A.sup.6 R.sup.4 III
- in which
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each, independently or one another, as defined for R.sup.1,
- A.sup.5 and A.sup.6 are each, independently of one another as defined for A.sup.1 and A.sup.2,
- Z.sup.5 is in each case, independently of the others, as defined for Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2, and
- o is 1, 2 or 3.
- 12. Electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 2, characterized in that the liquid crystalline medium contains at least one compound of formula III.
- R.sup.3 --(A.sup.5 --Z.sup.5).sub.o --A.sup.6 --R.sup.4 III
- in which
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each, independently or one another, as defined for R.sup.1,
- A.sup.5 and A.sup.6 are each, independently of one another as defined for A.sup.1 and A.sup.2,
- Z.sup.5 is in each case, independently of the others, as defined for Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2, and
- o is 1, 2 or 3.
- 13. Electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 1, characterized in that the liquid crystalline medium contains at least one compound of formula IV ##STR55## in which R.sup.5 is as defined for R.sup.1,
- A.sup.7 and A.sup.8 are each, independently of one another, as defined for A.sup.1 and A.sup.2,
- Z.sup.7 and Z.sup.8 are each, independently of one another as defined for Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2,
- L.sup.5 and L.sup.6 are each, independently of one another, H or F,
- Q is a polyfluoroalkylene radical of the formula
- --(O).sub.q --(CH.sub.2).sub.r --(CF.sub.2).sub.s --
- in which
- q is 0 or 1
- r is 0 or an integer between 1 and 6, and
- s is an integer between 1 and 6,
- X is H, F or Cl, and
- p is 0, 1 or 2.
- 14. Electrooptical liquid crystal display according to claim 2, characterized in that the liquid crystalline medium contains at least one compound of formula IV ##STR56## in which R.sup.5 is as defined for R.sup.1,
- A.sup.7 and A.sup.8 are each, independently of one another, as defined for A.sup.1 and A.sup.2,
- Z.sup.7 and Z.sup.8 are each, independently of one another as defined for Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2,
- L.sup.5 and L.sup.6 are each, independently of one another, H or F,
- Q is a polyfluoroalkylene radical of the formula
- --(O).sub.q --(CH.sub.2).sub.r --(CF.sub.2).sub.s --
- in which
- q is 0 or 1
- r is 0 or an integer between 1 and 6, and
- s is an integer between 1 and 6,
- X is H, F or Cl, and
- p is 0, 1 or 2.
- 15. A liquid crystalline medium, having positive dielectric anisotropy which comprises at least one compound selected from the group of formulae Ia and Ib. ##STR57## in which ##STR58## and R.sup.1 is H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having 1 to 15 carbon atoms which is unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may also, in each case independently of one another, be replaced by --O--, --S-- --CO--, --CO--O--, --O--CO-- or --O--CO--O-- in such a way, that O-atoms are not linked directly to one another,
- and at least one compound selected from the group of formulae IVa and IVb ##STR59## in which R.sup.5 is as defined for R.sup.1 and/or at least one compound of formula I which is different from the compounds of formulae Ia and Ib ##STR60## in which R.sup.1 is H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having 1 to 10 carbon atoms which is unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may also, in each case independently of one another, be replaced by --O--, --S--, ##STR61## --CO, --CO--O, --O--CO-- or --O--CO--O-- in such a way that O-atoms are not linked directly to one another,
- A.sup.1 and
- A.sup.2 are each, independently of one another, a
- (a) trans-1,4-cyclohexylene radical or 1,4-cyclohexenylene radical, in which, in addition, one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups may be replaced by --O-- and/or --S--,
- (b) 1,4-phenylene radical, in which, in addition, one or two CH-groups may be replaced by N,
- (c) radical from the group consisting of 1,4-dicyclo (2,2,2)octylene, piperidine-1,4-diyl, napthaline-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphthaline-2,6-diyl and 1,2,3,4,-tetrahydronaphthaline-2,6-diyl
- where the radicals (a) and (b) may be substituted by one two fluorine atoms,
- Z.sup.1 and
- Z.sup.2 are each, independently of one another, --CO--O--, --O--CO--, --CH.sub.2 O--, --OCH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH.dbd.CH--, --C.tbd.C--, or a single bond, or one of the radicals Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 is --(CH.sub.2).sub.4 -- or --CH.dbd.CH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- and
- m is 0, 1 or 2.
- 16. A liquid crystalline medium according to claim 15, which comprises at least one compound of formula I in which
- A.sup.1 is ##STR62## and A.sup.2 is ##STR63## Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are a single bond and m is 1.
- 17. A liquid crystalline medium according to claim 15 which comprises at least one compound of formula Ia or Ib which is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR64## wherein C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 is a straight chain alkyl group with n C-atoms, wherein n=1-7.
- 18. A liquid crystalline medium according to claim 15, having a dielectric anisotropy .DELTA..epsilon.>8.5.
- 19. A liquid crystalline medium according to claim 15, which contains at least one compound of formula III.
- R.sup.3 --(A.sup.5 --Z.sup.5).sub.o --A.sup.6 --R.sup.4 III
- in which
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each, independently or one another, as defined for R.sup.1,
- A.sup.5 and A.sup.6 are each, independently of one another as defined for A.sup.1 and A.sup.2,
- Z.sup.5 is in each case, independently of the others, as defined for Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2, and
- o is 1, 2 or 3.
- 20. A liquid crystalline medium according to claim 19, which contains at least one compound of formula IV ##STR65## in which R.sup.5 is as defined for R.sup.1,
- A.sup.7 and A.sup.8 are each, independently of one another, as defined for A.sup.1 and A.sup.2,
- Z.sup.7 and Z.sup.8 are each, independently of one another as defined for Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2,
- L.sup.5 and L.sup.6 are each, independently of one another, H or F,
- Q is a polyfluoroalkylene radical of the formula
- --(O).sub.q --(CH.sub.2).sub.r --(CF.sub.2).sub.s --
- in which
- q is 0 or 1
- r is 0 or an integer between 1 and 6, and
- s is an integer between 1 and 6,
- X is H, F or Cl, and
- p is 0, 1 or 2.
- 21. A liquid crystalline medium according to claim 20, which contains
- 10 to 60 mass % of at least one compound of formula I,
- 15 to 40 mass % of at least one compound of formula II, ##STR66## in which L.sup.3 and L.sup.4 are each H or F, R.sup.2 is as defined for R' of formula I, A.sup.3 and A.sup.4 are as defined for A.sup.1 and A.sup.2 of formula I
- Z.sup.3 and Z.sup.4 are as defined for Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 of formula I and n is 0, 1 or 2,
- 20 to 55 mass % of at least one compound of formula III, and
- 0 to 30 mass % of at least one compound of formula IV.
