Claims
- 1. A composite membrane layer suitable for use in an electrochemical autothermal reformer which comprises:
- (a) a support member having a predetermined porosity which enables selective diffusion of reformed fuel component (H.sub.2) to the composite membrane layer;
- (b) a gas permeable substrate layer overlaying said support member;
- (c) a first catalyst layer which promotes the dissociation of H.sub.2 to protons and electrons overlaying said substrate layer;
- (d) an oxide layer selected from the group consisting of known proton and electron conductors (mixed ion conductors) which is capable of conducting 2H.sup.+ +2e.sup.- at elevated temperatures overlaying said first catalyst layer; and
- (e) a second catalyst layer which promotes the recombination of 2H.sup.+ +2e.sup.- .fwdarw.H.sub.2 O (or recombination of protons and electrons to molecular hydrogen) overlaying said oxide layer.
- 2. A composite membrane suitable for use in a fuel reforming process which comprises:
- (a) a stable porous ceramic support member;
- (b) a gas permeable ceramic substrate layer overlaying said support member;
- (c) a first particulate metallic catalyst layer overlaying said substrate layer;
- (d) a non-gas permeable metal oxide layer overlaying said first catalyst layer; and
- (e) a second particulate metallic catalyst layer overlaying said metal oxide layer.
- 3. A composite separator membrane layer suitable for use in selectively extracting or removing hydrogen from a hydrogen production zone of a fuel reforming process which comprises:
- (a) a mechanically stable porous ceramic support member;
- (b) a thin gas permeable ceramic substrate layer overlaying said support member;
- (c) a first thin metallic catalyst layer which promotes the dissociation of H.sub.2 to 2H.sup.+ +2e.sup.- overlaying said substrate layer;
- (d) a metallic oxide layer which is capable of conducting 2H.sup.+ +2e.sup.- at elevated temperatures overlaying said first catalyst layer; and
- (e) a second thin metallic catalyst layer, which promotes the recombination of 2H.sup.+ +2e.sup.- to H.sub.2, overlaying said oxide layer.
- 4. The membrane layer of claim 3 in which said substrate layer comprises Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.
- 5. The membrane layer of claim 4 in which the first and second catalyst layers comprise platinum.
- 6. The membrane layer of claim 5 in which the platinum is in the form of discrete particles.
- 7. The membrane layer of claim 5 in which the metallic oxide layer comprises WO.sub.3.
