Claims
- 1. An electrochemical cell comprising:a can for containing electrochemically active materials including at least positive and negative electrodes and an electrolyte, said can including an open end and a closed end; a first outer cover positioned across the open end of said can; a collector electrically coupled to said first outer cover and extending internally within said can to electrically contact one of said positive and negative electrodes; and an annular seal having an L-shaped cross section disposed between said can and said first outer cover for electrically insulating said can from said first outer cover and creating a seal between said first outer cover and said can, wherein said closed end of said can has a pressure relief mechanism formed in a surface thereof for releasing internal pressure from within said can when the internal pressure becomes excessive.
- 2. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1, wherein said pressure relief mechanism includes a groove formed in said closed end of said can.
- 3. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1 further comprising a second outer cover positioned on the closed end of said can in electrical contact therewith, wherein said second outer cover overlies said pressure relief mechanism.
- 4. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 3, wherein said second outer cover is electrically coupled to said positive electrode to serve as a positive external battery terminal and said first outer cover is electrically coupled to said negative electrode to serve as a negative external battery terminal.
- 5. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1, wherein said first outer cover has a rollback edge formed at the outer perimeter edge.
- 6. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1, wherein said annular seal further includes a vertical member to form a J-shaped cross section.
- 7. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 1, wherein said collector comprises a nail.
- 8. An electrochemical cell comprising:a can for containing electrochemically active materials including at least positive and negative electrodes and an electrolyte, said can including an open end and a closed end; a first outer cover positioned across the open end of said can; a collector electrically coupled to said first outer cover and extending internally within said can to electrically contact one of said positive and negative electrodes; an annular seal having an L-shaped cross section disposed between said can and said first outer cover for electrically insulating said can from said first outer cover and creating a seal between said first outer cover and said can; and a protective coating coated on an inner surface of said first outer cover, said coating comprised of an electrochemically compatible material.
- 9. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 8, wherein said coating further extends at least partially on one end of said collector coupled to said first outer cover.
- 10. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 8, wherein said annular seal comprises nylon.
- 11. An electrochemical cell comprising:a can for containing electrochemically active materials including at least positive and negative electrodes and an electrolyte, said can including an open end and a closed end and side walls extending between said open end and closed end; a first outer cover positioned across the open end of said can; a collector electrically coupled to said first outer cover and extending internally within said can to electrically contact one of said positive and negative electrodes; an annular seal having an L-shaped cross section disposed between said can and said first outer cover for electrically insulating said can from said first outer cover and creating a seal between said first outer cover and said can; and a pressure relief mechanism formed in said can for releasing internal pressure from within said can when the internal pressure becomes excessive, wherein said pressure relief mechanism includes a groove formed in said closed end of said can.
- 12. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 11, wherein said annular seal comprises nylon.
- 13. An electrochemical cell comprising:a can for containing electrochemically active materials including at least positive and negative electrodes and an electrolyte, said can including an open end and a closed end and side walls extending between said open end and closed end; a first outer cover positioned across the open end of said can; a collector electrically coupled to said first outer cover and extending internally within said can to electrically contact one of said positive and negative electrodes; an annular seal having an L-shaped cross section disposed between said can and said first outer cover for electrically insulating said can from said first outer cover and creating a seal between said first outer cover and said can; a pressure relief mechanism formed in said can for releasing internal pressure from within said can when the internal pressure becomes excessive; and a second outer cover positioned on the closed end of said can in electrical contact therewith, wherein said second outer cover overlies said pressure relief mechanism.
- 14. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 13, wherein said second outer cover is electrically coupled to said positive electrode to serve as a positive external battery terminal and said first outer cover is electrically coupled to said negative electrode to serve as a negative external battery terminal.
- 15. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 13, wherein said first outer cover has a rollback edge formed at an outer perimeter edge.
- 16. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 13, wherein said annular seal further includes an extended vertical member to form a J-shaped cross section.
- 17. An electrochemical cell comprising:a can for containing electrochemically active materials including at least positive and negative electrodes and an electrolyte, said can including an open end and a closed end; a first outer cover positioned across the open end of said can; a collector electrically coupled to said first outer cover and extending internally within said can to electrically contact one of said positive and negative electrodes; an annular seal having an L-shaped cross section disposed between said can and said first outer cover for electrically insulating said can from said first outer cover and creating a seal between said first outer cover and said can; and a protective coating extending at least partially on an inside surface of said first outer cover, said protective coating including an electrochemically compatible material for reducing corrosion and gassing within said electrochemical cell.
- 18. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 17, wherein said closed end of said can has a pressure relief mechanism formed in a surface thereof adapted for releasing internal pressure from within said can when the internal pressure becomes excessive.
- 19. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 18, wherein said pressure relief mechanism includes a groove formed in said closed end of said can.
- 20. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 17 further comprising a second outer cover positioned on the closed end of said can in electrical contact therewith, wherein said second outer cover overlies said pressure relief mechanism.
- 21. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 17, wherein said coating comprises materials selected from the group consisting of: epoxy, Teflon®, polyolefin, nylon, and elastomeric material.
- 22. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 17, wherein said annular seal comprises nylon.
- 23. An electrochemical cell comprising:a can for containing electrochemically active materials including at least positive and negative electrodes and an electrolyte, said can including an open end and a closed end; a first outer cover positioned across the open end of said can; a collector electrically coupled to said first outer cover and extending internally within said can to electrically contact one of said positive and negative electrodes; and an annular seal having a J-shaped cross section disposed between said can and said first outer cover for electrically insulating said can from said first outer cover and creating a seal between said first outer cover and said can, wherein said closed end of said can has a pressure relief mechanism formed in a surface thereof adapted for releasing internal pressure from within said can when the internal pressure becomes excessive.
- 24. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 23 further comprising a second outer cover positioned on the closed end of said can in electrical contact therewith, wherein said second outer cover overlies said pressure relief mechanism.
- 25. An electrochemical cell comprising:a can for containing electrochemically active materials including at least positive and negative electrodes and an electrolyte, said can including an open end and a closed end; a first outer cover positioned across the open end of said can; a collector electrically coupled to said first outer cover and extending internally within said can to electrically contact one of said positive and negative electrodes; an annular seal having a J-shaped cross section disposed between said can and said first outer cover for electrically insulating said can from said first outer cover and creating a seal between said first outer cover and said can; and a protective coating extending at least partially on an inside surface of said outer cover, said protective coating including an electrochemically compatible material for reducing corrosion and gassing within said electrochemical cell.
- 26. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 25, wherein said coating comprises materials selected from the group consisting of: epoxy, Teflon®, polyolefin, nylon, and elastomeric material.
- 27. The electrochemical cell as defined in claim 25, wherein said annular seal comprises nylon.
