Claims
- 1. An electrode system, suitable for use with a counter electrode to perform an electrochemical process in accordance with the invention, which electrode system comprises a particulate electrode, a current conductor, a vessel containing said particulate electrode and current conductor and having an ion-permeable wall at least a part of which is inclined towards the particulate electrode, and means for flowing a fluid medium through said vessel in contact with said particulate electrode.
- 2. An electrode system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said ion-permeable wall is inclined to the vertical at an angle in the range of from 1.degree. to 45.degree..
- 3. An electrode system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said ion-permeable wall is inclined to the vertical at an angle in the range of from 3.degree. to 25.degree..
- 4. An electrode system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said vessel comrises a back wall which is substantially parallel to the ion-permeable wall.
- 5. An electrode system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said vessel comprises a truncated wedge shaped portion having a back wall which is, at least in part, inclined away from the same side of, and at a greater angle to, the vertical than is the ion-permeable wall.
- 6. An electrode system as claimed in claim 5, wherein an upper portion of said back wall is parallel to the plane of said ion-permeable wall.
- 7. An electrode system as claimed in claim 5 wherein said upper portion of said back wall constitutes a major proportion of the height of said back wall.
- 8. An electrode system as claimed in claim 5 wherein said truncated wedge shaped portion of said vessel has a wedge taper angle in the range of from 1:20 to 1:5.
- 9. An electrode system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said current conductor comprises a plate-like member abutting a back wall of said vessel.
- 10. An electrode system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said means for flowing a fluid medium through said vessel includes a flow distributor having a plurality of discrete inlet passages of substantially cylindrical cross-section through which, in use, a fluid medium can pass into said vessel.
- 11. An electrochemical cell comprising a first electrode compartment containing a counter electrode, a second electrode compartment containing an electrode system comprising a particulate electrode and a current conductor, and means for flowing a fluid medium through said vessel in contact with said particulate electrode, wherein said first and second electrode compartments are separated by a separator which has an ion-permeable wall at least a part of which is inclined towards the particulate electrode.
- 12. An electrochemical cell as claimed in claim 11 wherein said counter-electrode is a particulate electrode.
- 13. An electrochemical cell as claimed in claim 11 wherein said counter-electrode comprises a massive plate-like member of titanium coated with an electrochemically active coating.
- 14. An electrochemical cell as claimed in claim 13 wherein said plate-like member of titanium is an expanded metal mesh.
