Claims
- 1. A process for electrochemical separation of oxygen from an oxygen containing gaseous mixture comprising: supplying a gaseous admixture comprising O.sub.2 and a non-metallic oxide to a porous cathode catalytically active for promotion of a cathode reaction ze.sup.- +nO.sub.2 +XO.sub.m .fwdarw.XO.sub.zn.sup.z- +m, passing formed oxygen containing non-metallic ion through an oxygen containing molten inorganic salt electrolyte to a porous anode catalytically active for promotion of an anode reaction XO.sub.zn +m.sup.z- .fwdarw.ze.sup.- +nO.sub.2 +XO.sub.m
- wherein
- z=1, 2, or 3;
- n=1/2 or 1;
- m=1, 2, or 3; and
- X=a non-metallic oxide forming element capable of forming the oxide and oxygen containing ion for conduct of said electrochemical reactions, separating formed O.sub.2 from formed said non-metallic oxide and removing separated O.sub.2 from the process, passing released e.sup.- through an external electrical circuit to said cathode, and supplying electric potential to said cathode sufficient to drive said electrochemical reactions.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein said non-metallic oxide is selected from the group consisting of NO.sub.2, CO.sub.2, SO.sub.2 and P.sub.2 O.sub.5.
- 3. A process according to claim 2 wherein said oxygen containing inorganic salt electrolyte has an oxygen containing portion selected from the group consisting of nitrate, carbonate, sulfate and phosphate corresponding to said non-metallic oxide.
- 4. A process according to claim 3 wherein said electrolyte is retained in a porous matrix selected from the group consisting of MgO, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, LiAlO.sub.2 and mixtures thereof.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein said oxygen containing gaseous mixture comprises air.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein said anode and cathode comprises a catalyst selected from elements of the Periodic Table appearing in a group selected from the group consisting of Groups IB, IIB, IIIA, VB, VIB, VIIB and VIII in metal, oxide or cermet form.
- 7. A process according to claim 6 wherein said catalyst is selected from the group consisting of zinc, silver, nickel, aluminum, iron, copper, chromium, and mixtures thereof.
- 8. A process according to claim 1 wherein one of said anode and cathode comprises copper oxide.
- 9. A process according to claim 1 wherein said process is carried out at a temperature of about 500.degree. to about 900.degree. C.
- 10. A process according to claim 1 wherein said process is carried out at a temperature of about 500.degree. to about 700.degree..
- 11. A process according to claim 1 wherein said process is carried out at a pressure about 1 to about 100 atmospheres.
- 12. A process according to claim 1 wherein said process is carried out at a pressure about 1 to about 5 atmospheres.
- 13. A process according to claim 1 wherein said gaseous admixture comprises about 1 to about 30 mole percent said non-metallic oxide concentration.
- 14. A process according to claim 1 wherein said gaseous admixture comprises about 15 to about 20 mole percent said non-metallic oxide concentration.
- 15. A process according to claim 1 comprising the additional step of withdrawing exhaust gas from said cathode, separating and discharging oxide forming element from said exhaust gas, and recycling principally oxide to said gaseous admixture.
- 16. A process according to claim 1 wherein said non-metallic oxide is selected from the group consisting of NO.sub.2, CO.sub.2, SO.sub.2 and P.sub.2 O.sub.5, said oxygen containing inorganic salt electrolyte has an oxygen containing portion selected from the group consisting of nitrate, carbonate, sulfate and phosphate corresponding to said non-metallic oxide, one of said anode and cathode comprises copper oxide, said process is carried out at a pressure about 1 to about 100 atmospheres, and said gaseous admixture comprises about 15 to about 20 mole percent said non-metallic oxide concentration.
