Claims
- 1. A chemical moiety having the formula
- (Re(P).sub.m (L.sup.1).sub.n (L.sup.2).sub.o (L.sup.3).sub.p (L.sup.4).sub.q).sub.t (B).sub.u
- wherein
- P is a bipyridyl ligand of Re;
- L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3 and L.sup.4 are monodentate ligands of Re, each of which may be the same as or not the same as each other ligand;
- B is a whole cell, subcellular particle, polypeptide, nucleic acid, polysaccharide, alkaloid, steroid, vitamin, amino acid, or nonbiological polymer which is conjugated to one or more of P, L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3 and L.sup.4 ;
- m is an integer equal to or greater than 1;
- each of n, o, p and q is zero or an integer;
- t is an integer equal to or greater than 1; and
- u is an integer equal to or greater than 1;
- P, L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3, L.sup.4 and B being of such composition and number that the chemical moiety can be induced to electrochemiluminesce and the total number of bonds to Re provided by the ligands of Re being equal to the coordination number of Re.
- 2. A chemical moiety according to claim 1, wherein P is substituted with an alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, aralkyl, substituted aralkyl, carboxylate, carboxaldehyde, carboxamide, cyano, amino, hydroxy, imino, hydroxycarbonyl, aminocarbonyl, amidine, guanidinium, ureide, a sulfur-containing group, a phosphorus-containing group, or the carboxylate ester of N-hydroxysuccinimide.
- 3. A chemical moiety according to claim 1, wherein L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3, or L.sup.4 is a carbonyl ligand.
- 4. A chemical moiety according to claim 1 wherein at least one of L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3 and L.sup.4 is substituted with an alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, aralkyl, substituted aralkyl, carboxylate, carboxaldehyde, carboxamide, cyano, amino, hydroxy, imino, hydroxycarbonyl, aminocarbonyl, amidine, guanidinium, ureide, a sulfur-containing group, a phosphorus-containing group, or the carboxylate ester of N-hydroxysuccinimide.
- 5. A chemical moiety according to claim 1, wherein B is bound to one or more of P, L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3 and L.sup.4 and L.sup.6 through one or more direct amide linkages.
- 6. A chemical moiety having the structure ##STR26##
- 7. A chemical moiety having the structure ##STR27##
- 8. A salt comprising a chemical moiety of claim 6 or 7 and a counterion.
- 9. A salt according to claim 8 wherein the counterion is a cation selected from the group consisting of NH.sub.4.sup.+, guanidinium, Ag.sup.+, Li.sup.+, Na.sup.+, K.sup.+, Ca.sup.2+, Mg.sup.2+, Mn.sup.2+ or Cd.sup.2+, or an anion selected from the group consisting of SO.sub.4.sup.2-, a halide, carbonate, hexafluorophosphate or tetrafluoroborate perchlorate.
- 10. A chemical moiety having the structure ##STR28## wherein X and X' may be the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of H, N(C.sub.2 H.sub.5).sub.2, CH.sub.3, CH.sub.3 O, C.sub.6 H.sub.5, Cl, CO.sub.2 CH.sub.3, CN, and NO.sub.2, and Y and Y' may be the same or different and are either H or CH.sub.3, provided that if X and X' are the same and Y and Y' are the same and X is CO.sub.2 CH.sub.3, then Y is not H and, further provided that if X and X' are the same and Y and Y' are the same, then X and Y are not H; and R is an anion.
- 11. A chemical moiety as recited in claim 10 wherein X and X' are N(C.sub.2 H.sub.5).sub.2 and Y and Y' are H.
- 12. A chemical moiety as recited in claim 10 wherein X and X' are CH.sub.3 and Y and Y' are CH.sub.3.
- 13. A chemical moiety as recited in claim 10 wherein X and X' are CH.sub.3 and Y and Y' are H.
- 14. A chemical moiety as recited in claim 10 wherein X and X' are CH.sub.3 O and Y and Y' are H.
- 15. A chemical moiety as recited in claim 10 wherein X and X' are phenyl and Y and Y' are H.
- 16. A chemical moiety as recited in claim 10 wherein X and X' are Cl and Y and Y' are H.
- 17. A chemical moiety as recited in claim 10 wherein X and X' are CN and Y and Y' are H.
- 18. A chemical moiety as recited in claim 10 wherein X and X' are NO.sub.2 and Y and Y' are H.
- 19. An electrochemiluminiscent rhenium-containing moiety having the formula ##STR29## wherein W is selected from the group consisting of CHO, COOH, NH.sub.2 and Br, R is an anion n is an integer and the bipyridyl group may be substituted or unsubstituted.
- 20. A chemical moiety having the formula
- (Re(P).sub.m (L.sup.1).sub.n (L.sup.2).sub.o (L.sup.3).sub.p (L.sup.4).sub.q).sub.t (B).sub.u
- wherein
- P is a bidentate aromatic heterocyclic nitrogen-containing ligand of Re selected from the group consisting of bipyridyl, substituted bipyridyl, bipyrazyl, substituted bipyrazyl, phenanthrolyl and substituted phenanthrolyl, wherein each of said substituted groups is substituted by an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, carboxylate, carboxaldehyde, carboxamide, cyano, amino, hydroxycarbonyl, hydroxyamino, aminocarbonyl, amidine, guanidinium, ureide, sulfur-containing group, phosphorous-containing group, or the carboxylate ester of N-hydroxysuccinimide;
- L.sup.1, and L.sup.2, independently of one another, each is a bidentate aromatic heterocyclic nitrogen-containing ligand of Re selected from the group consisting of bipyridyl, substituted bipyridyl, bipyrazyl, substituted bipyrazyl, phenanthrolyl and substituted phenanthrolyl, wherein each of said substituted groups is substituted by an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, carboxylate, carboxaldehyde, carboxamide, cyano, amino, hydroxycarbonyl, hydroxyamino, aminocarbonyl, amidine, guanidinium, ureide, sulfur-containing group, phosphorous-containing group, or the carboxylate ester of N-hydroxysuccinimide; or is a monodentate ligand selected from the group consisting of carbon monoxide, cyanides, isocyanides, halides, and aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic phosphines, amines, stilbines, and arsines; and
- each of L.sup.3, and L.sup.4 is a monodentate ligand selected from the group consisting of carbon monoxide, cyanides, isocyanides, halides, aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic phosphines, amines, stilbines, and arsines;
- each of P, L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3, and L.sup.4 being the same or not the same as each other ligand;
- B is a whole cell, subcellular particle, polypeptide, nucleic acid, polysaccharide, alkaloid, steroid, vitamin, amino acid, or nonbiological polymer which is conjugated to one or more of P, L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3 and L.sup.4 ;
- m is an integer equal to or greater than 1;
- each of n, o, p and q is zero or an integer;
- t is an integer equal to or greater than 1; and
- u is an integer equal to or greater than 1;
- P, L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3, L.sup.4, and B being of such composition and number that the chemical moiety can be induced to electrochemiluminesce and the total number of bonds to Re provided by the ligands of Re being equal to the coordination number of Re.
