Claims
- 1. An electrochromic device comprising:
a front element having a front surface and a rear surface having a first layer of electrically conductive material disposed thereon; a rear element having a front surface and a rear surface, said front surface of said rear element having a second layer of electrically conductive material disposed thereon; a seal provided to sealably bond said elements together in a spaced-apart relationship to define a chamber; an electrochromic material disposed in said chamber; and an electrical conductor provided to electrically couple a portion of said first conductive layer with a portion of said second conductive layer.
- 2. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein said electrical conductor includes electrically conductive particles dispersed within at least a portion of said seal.
- 3. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein said electrical conductor includes electrically conductive particles dispersed within at least a portion of the width of said seal.
- 4. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein said electrical conductor includes electrically conductive particles dispersed within at least a portion of the length of said seal.
- 5. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein said second conductive layer is reflective.
- 6. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein said front and rear elements are substantially aligned.
- 7. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein said first layer of electrically conductive material is transparent, wherein said second layer of electrically conductive material is reflective to service as a reflector/electrode including at least a sublayer of highly reflective silver alloy, wherein said electrochromic material includes at least one solution-phase electrochromic material in contact with said reflector/electrode, and wherein said reflector/electrode is effective to reflect light through said electrochromic material and said front element when said light reaches said reflector/electrode after passing through said front element and said at least one electrochromic material.
- 8. The electrochromic device of claim 7, wherein the silver alloy is a combination of silver and an element selected from the group consisting essentially of gold, platinum, rhodium, and palladium.
- 9. The electrochromic device of claim 1, where said reflector/electrode comprises a plurality of layers.
- 10. The electrochromic device of claim 9, where said reflector/electrode further includes a base layer disposed beneath said highly reflective alloy.
- 11. The electrochromic device of claim 10, where said base layer comprises a material selected from the group consisting essentially of: chromium; chromium-molybdenum-nickel alloys; nickel-iron-chromium alloys; stainless steel; and titanium.
- 12. The electrochromic device of claim 11, where said reflector/electrode further includes at least one intermediate layer disposed between said highly reflective alloy and said base layer, where said intermediate layer comprises a material selected from the group consisting essentially of: molybdenum; rhodium; stainless steel; and titanium.
- 13. The electrochromic device of claim 12, where said reflector/electrode further includes at least one flash over-layer disposed over said highly reflective layer, where said flash over-layer comprises a material selected from the group consisting essentially of: rhodium, molybdenum, and platinum.
- 14. The electrochromic device of claim 12, where said intermediate layer covers the entire surface of said front surface of said rear element.
- 15. The electrochromic device of claim 12, where said intermediate layer covers an inner portion of said front surface of said rear element.
- 14. The electrochromic device of claim 7, where said reflector/electrode is removed in a peripheral portion of said front surface of said rear element.
- 15. The electrochromic device of claim 14, where said reflector/electrode is removed by a technique selected from the group consisting of etching, mechanical scraping, and sandblasting.
- 16. An electrochromic device comprising:
a front element having a front surface and a rear surface having a first layer of electrically conductive material disposed thereon; a rear element having a front surface and a rear surface, said front surface of said rear element having a second layer of electrically conductive material disposed thereon; a seal provided to sealably bond said elements together in a spaced-apart relationship to define a chamber; and an electrochromic material disposed in said chamber, wherein at least one of said first and second conductive layers is separated into a first portion and a second portion that is electrically isolated from said first portion and is in electrical contact with said electrochromic material.
- 17. The electrochromic device of claim 16 further comprising a first electrical connector for electrically connecting said second portion to a power source.
- 18. The electrochromic device of claim 16, wherein said front and rear elements are substantially aligned.
- 19. The electrochromic device of claim 16, wherein said first portion of said second conductive layer is separated into said first portion and said second portion.
- 20. The electrochromic device of claim 19 and further comprising an electrical conductor for electrically coupling said first portion of said second conductive layer to at least one portion of said first conductive layer.
- 21. The electrochromic device of claim 20, wherein said at least one portion of said first conductive layer is in electrical contact with said electrochromic material.
- 22. The electrochromic device of claim 21 further comprising a first electrical connector for electrically connecting said second portion of said second conductive layer to a power source.
- 23. The electrochromic device of claim 22 and further comprising a second electrical connector for electrically connecting said first portion of said second conductive layer to the power source.
- 24. The electrochromic device of claim 20, wherein said electrical conductor includes electrically conductive particles dispersed within at least a portion of said seal.
- 25. An electrochromic device comprising:
a front element having a peripheral edge, a front surface, and a rear surface having a first layer of electrically conductive material disposed thereon; a rear element having a peripheral edge, a front surface, and a rear surface, said front surface of said rear element having a second layer of electrically conductive material disposed thereon; a seal provided to sealably bond said elements together in a spaced-apart relationship to define a chamber, wherein said seal has at least one electrically conductive region; and an electrochromic material disposed in said chamber.
- 26. The electrochromic device of claim 25, wherein said seal has an electrically nonconductive inner portion disposed between said electrically conductive region and said electrochromic medium.
- 27. The electrochromic device of claim 25, wherein said electrically conductive region of said seal is made of epoxy with conductive particles contained therein.
- 28. The electrochromic device of claim 25, wherein said front and rear elements are substantially aligned.
- 29. The electrochromic device of claim 25, wherein said electrically conductive region of said seal extends less than all of the length of said seal.
- 30. The electrochromic device of claim 25, wherein said electrically conductive region of said seal extends less than all of the width of said seal.
