Claims
- 1. An electroconductive coating for a paper substrate, which consists essentially of an aqueous solution of a cationic, self-crosslinking, alkaline-curable polymer and an alkali or alkaline earth salt; the polymer consisting essentially of (a) about 70 to 98 mole % of a non-crosslinking, cationic quaternary ammonium salt monomer, (b) about 1 to 20 mole % of a halohydrin monomer having the formula ##STR23## where X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine, n is 1, and R is H or CH.sub.3, (c) about 1-10 mole % of a secondary or tertiary amine salt monomer having the formula ##STR24## where R.sup.1 is H or CH.sub.3, R.sup.2 is H when R.sup.3 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 linear alkyl, or R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently a lower alkyl, or R.sup.3 is H when R.sup.2 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 linear alkyl, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, and R.sup.6 are independently H or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 linear alkyl, m is 2 or 3, Z is --NH-- or --O--, and HY is an organic or inorganic acid, and (d) 0 to about 28 mole % of a vinyl polymerizable monomer other than (a), (b), or (c), with the mole percentage totalling 100%; wherein the polymer crosslinks, in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth salt, at a lower temperature than a polymer without the amine salt of (c).
- 2. The coating of claim 1, wherein the non-crosslinking, cationic quaternary ammonium salt monomer has the formula ##STR25## where R.sup.7 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl group, R.sup.8 is R.sup.7 or -propionamido, and A is an anion.
- 3. The coating of claim 2, wherein the non-crosslinking cationic quaternary ammonium salt monomer is dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride.
- 4. The coating of claim 1, wherein the halohydrin-containing monomer is 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate.
- 5. The coating of claim 1, wherein the halohydrin-containing monomer is the adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate.
- 6. The coating of claim 1, wherein the amine salt monomer is dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate.
- 7. The coating of claim 1, wherein the polymer consists essentially of 70-97% of the non-crosslinking, cationic quaternary ammonium salt monomer, 2-20 mole % of the halohydrin monomer, and 1-10 mole % of the amine salt monomer.
- 8. The coating of claim 7, wherein the non-crosslinking, cationic monomer is dimethyldiallyl ammonium chloride, the halohydrin-containing monomer is 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate, and the amine salt monomer is dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate.
- 9. The coating of claim 7, wherein the non-crosslinking, cationic monomer is dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, the halohydrin-containing monomer is the adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, and the amine salt monomer is dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate.
- 10. The coating of claim 1, wherein the polymer consists essentially of about 70-94% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, about 3-20% 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, and about 3% dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride or about 2-10% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride, or about 4% N-methyl diallyl amine hydrochloride.
- 11. The coating of claim 1, wherein the polymer consists essentially of about 88-93% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, about 3-9% of the adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide or 3% of the adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, and about 4% N-methyl diallyl amine hydrochloride, or 4% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride, or 4% dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride.
- 12. The coating of claim 1, wherein the polymer consists essentially of 93% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 4% 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, and 3% dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride; 87% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 7% 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, and 6% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride; 81% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 12% 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, and 7% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride; 75% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 15% 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, and 10% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride; 70% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 20% 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, and 10% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride; 94% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 3% 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, and 2% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride; 93% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 3% 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, and 4% N-methyl diallyl amine hydrochloride; or 91% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 3% 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, and 6% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride.
- 13. The coating of claim 1, wherein the polymer consists essentially of 93% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 3% of the adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide, and 4% N-methyl diallyl amine hydrochloride; 93% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 3% of the adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide, and 4% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride; 88% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 9% of the adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide, and 3% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride; 93% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 3% of the adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, and 4% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride; or 93% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 3% of the adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, and 4% of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride.
- 14. The coating of claim 1, further consisting essentially of a vinyl polymerizable monomer.
- 15. The coating of claim 14, wherein the vinyl polymerizable monomer is acrylic acid.
- 16. The coating of claim 15, wherein the polymer consists essentially of 87% dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, 5% 3-chloro-2-hydroxylpropyl acrylate, 6% dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide hydrochloride, and 2% acrylic acid.
- 17. An electroconductive paper, which comprises a paper substrate having a dried layer of the electroconductive coating of claim 1.
- 18. An electroconductive paper, which comprises a paper substrate having a dried layer of the electroconductive coating of claim 8.
- 19. An electroconductive paper, which comprises a paper substrate having a dried layer of the electroconductive coating of claim 15.
