The present application belongs to the technical field of batteries, and specifically relates to an electrode assembly, a battery, a battery module, a battery pack and a powered device.
Rechargeable and dischargeable batteries are widely used due to the advantages of a high energy density, a long cycle life, a reliable working performance, no pollution, no memory effect, etc. In recent years, with the application and promotion of rechargeable and dischargeable batteries in various electronic products and new energy vehicles, the safety performance thereof has received more and more attention. Traditional batteries include square batteries and cylindrical batteries. Compared with square batteries, cylindrical batteries have the advantages of a better structural stability, fewer components and parts, a simple preparation process, etc. In a cylindrical battery, a wound electrode assembly is usually used, wherein the wound electrode assembly is formed by winding a positive electrode piece, a separator and a negative electrode piece, and a central hole is formed in the center of the wound electrode assembly. However, the central hole of the cylindrical battery easily collapses. The collapse of the central hole refers to the phenomenon that the central hole is partially or completely blocked during battery formation and cyclic charge and discharge. The collapse of the central hole makes the battery have exhaust difficulties and increased safety risk, thereby seriously affecting the cycle performance of the battery.

In some embodiments, the thickness of the base film is 5 µm to 12 µm. Optionally, the thickness of the base film is 6 µm to 7 µm. When the thickness of the base film is within an appropriate range, the separator can have a relatively high ionic conductivity while having a sufficient compressive strength.
In some embodiments, the porosity of the base film is 30-50%. Optionally, the porosity of the base film is 35-50%. When the porosity of the base film is within an appropriate range, the separator can have a relatively high ionic conductivity while having a sufficient compressive strength.
In some embodiments, the type of the base film is not particularly limited, and any well-known porous structure film with good chemical stability and mechanical stability can be selected. Optionally, the base film is selected from one or more of a polyolefin porous film, a non-woven fabric, and glass fibers. The base film may be a single-layer film, or may also be a multi-layer composite film. When the base film is a multi-layer composite film, the materials of the layers are the same or different. By way of example, the material of the base film can be selected from one or more of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyimide, polyvinylidene fluoride, a vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene copolymer, polyamide, and polyethylene terephthalate.
The base film has two surfaces opposite in its thickness direction, and the coating is provided on any one or both of the two surfaces of the base film.
In some embodiments, the total thickness of the coating is 0.5 µm to 5 µm. In the present application, the term “total thickness of the coating” refers to the sum of the thicknesses of coatings provided on both surfaces of the base film. When the coating is provided on any one of the two surfaces of the base film, the thickness of the coating is the total thickness of the coatings; and when the coating is provided on both of the two surfaces of the base film, the sum of the thicknesses of the coatings is the total thickness of the coatings.
For example, the total thickness of the coating is 0.5 µm, 1.0 µm, 1.5 µm, 2.0 µm, 2.5 µm, 3.0 µm, 3.5 µm, 4.0 µm, 4.5 µm, or 5.0 µm, or a range formed by any of the above numerical values. Optionally, the total thickness of the coating is 0.5 µm to 2 µm. When the total thickness of the coating is in an appropriate range, the coating can have an appropriate compressive strength upon reaction with water and does not release excess heat upon reaction with water.
In some embodiments, the heat of hydration within 2 days of the reaction of the coating with water is 300 J/g to 500 J/g. For example, the heat of hydration within 2 days of the reaction of the coating with water is 300 J/g, 310 J/g, 320 J/g, 330 J/g, 340 J/g, 350 J/g, 360 J/g, 370 J/g, 380 J/g, 390 J/g, 400 J/g, 410 J/g, 420 J/g, 430 J/g, 440 J/g, 450 J/g, 460 J/g, 470 J/g, 480 J/g, 490 J/g, or 500 J/g, or a range formed by any of the above numerical values. By adjusting the composition, thickness, etc. of the coating, the coating can have an appropriate heat release upon reaction with water. This makes it possible to increase the transmission speed of active ions between the positive and negative electrodes of the battery, thereby improving the cycle performance and rate performance of the battery; moreover, it is ensured that the other electrochemical properties of the battery will not be affected.
In some embodiments, the compressive strength of the coating after reaction with water and hardening is 2500 Pa to 20000 Pa. For example, the compressive strength of the coating after reaction with water and hardening is 2500 Pa, 3000 Pa, 4000 Pa, 5000 Pa, 6000 Pa, 7000 Pa, 8000 Pa, 9000 Pa, 10000 Pa, 11000 Pa, 12000 Pa, 13000 Pa, 14000 Pa, 15000 Pa, 16000 Pa, 17000 Pa, 18000 Pa, 19000 Pa, 20000 Pa, or a range formed by any of the above numerical values. Optionally, the compressive strength of the coating after reaction with water and hardening is 2500 Pa to 18000 Pa, 2500 Pa to 16000 Pa, 2500 Pa to 14000 Pa, 2500 Pa to 12000 Pa, 2500 Pa to 10000 Pa, 2500 Pa to 9000 Pa, 2500 Pa to 8000 Pa, 2500 Pa to 7000 Pa, 2500 Pa to 6000 Pa, or 2500 Pa to 5000 Pa. By adjusting the composition, thickness, etc. of the coating, the coating can have a relatively high compressive strength upon reaction with water, making the separator less likely to deform during battery formation and charge-discharge cycling, thereby effectively inhibiting the collapse of the central hole and the growth of dendrites, thus improving the safety performance of the battery and prolonging the cycle life of the battery.
The heat of hydration has a well-known meaning in the art, and can be measured by instruments and methods known in the art. For example, the heat of hydration of the coating is measured using a TAM Air thermal activity microcalorimeter (from TA Instruments, USA). An exemplary test method is as follows: a freshly prepared separator is taken for testing, a sample is taken from a coating in any area of a separator (for example, the sample is taken by powder scraping using a razor blade), and the mass of the entire collected sample is weighed; and the entire collected sample is put into an ampoule, metered water is drawn with a syringe on an electric stirrer, the electric stirrer is then inserted into the ampoule, the electric stirrer and the ampoule are then placed together in a measuring position of a microcalorimeter, the water in the syringe is finally poured into the ampoule, and stirring and recording are started to obtain the total heat release during the test period. In this method, the test period is 48 hours and the test temperature is room temperature.
The compressive strength has a well-known meaning in the art, and can be measured by instruments and methods known in the art. When testing, the separator sample can be taken directly from a freshly prepared separator or from a battery.
When a freshly prepared separator is taken for testing, an exemplary test method is as follows: a freshly prepared single-side-coated separator sample is taken for testing, and if the separator is double-side-coated, the coating on one side can be wiped off first; the separator is placed in deionized water to make the coating fully react with water and harden; and the separator is taken out of deionized water, fully dried and then placed in a compressive strength tester (for example, YN-200-400 microcomputer compressive strength tester) for testing to obtain the failure load when the separator is ruptured. Optionally, the loading speed is 0.4 MPa/s to 0.6 MPa/s.
When the separator is obtained from a battery, an exemplary test method is as follows: after the battery is fully discharged, the separator is disassembled, and a fully hardened area at a winding start end is taken for testing, and if the separator is double-side-coated, the coating on one side can be wiped off first; and the separator is placed in an oven, fully dried (for example, at 45° C., 30 min) to remove excess electrolyte solution, and then placed in a compressive strength tester (for example, YN-200-400 microcomputer compressive strength tester) for testing to obtain the failure load when the separator is ruptured. Optionally, the loading speed is 0.4 MPa/s to 0.6 MPa/s.
The compressive strength of the coating after reaction with water and hardening is calculated according to the formula p = P/A, where p represents the compressive strength of the sample, P represents the failure load of the sample, and A represents the area of the sample.
In some embodiments, the coating is located in a region from 0 cm to L cm from a winding start end of the separator, with 10 ≤ L ≤ 20. The coating containing the hydraulic inorganic material is only provided in partial area of a winding start end of the separator, so that the collapse of the central hole and the growth of dendrites can be effectively inhibited, without significantly reducing the mass energy density of the battery. Therefore, the electrode assembly of the present application can have both a high safety performance and a high energy density.
The separator can be prepared according to a conventional method in the art. An exemplary preparation method is as follows: a hydraulic inorganic material and optional additives are dissolved in an organic solvent and fully stirred and mixed to form a uniform coating slurry; and the coating slurry is applied on the surface of a base film and dried to obtain the separator. In this method, the type of the organic solvent is not specifically limited and can be selected according to actual needs. For example, the organic solvent is selected from dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, ethyl methyl carbonate, etc.
In some embodiments, the pH of the electrolyte solution is 5-9. Optionally, the pH of the electrolyte solution is 7.

The positive electrode active material Na0.44MnO2, the conductive agent carbon black, and the binder PVA were fully stirred and mixed in an appropriate amount of deionized water at a mass ratio of 96 : 2 : 2 to form a uniform positive electrode slurry; and the positive electrode slurry was applied on both surfaces of a positive electrode current collector aluminum foil, dried and cold pressed to obtain a positive electrode piece.
The negative electrode active material hard carbon, the conductive agent carbon black, and the binder PVA were fully stirred and mixed in an appropriate amount of deionized water at a mass ratio of 95 : 2.5 : 2.5 to form a uniform negative electrode slurry; and the negative electrode slurry was applied on both surfaces of a negative electrode current collector copper foil, dried and cold pressed to obtain a negative electrode piece.
3CaO•SiO2 (with a Dv10 of 4.7 µm) was dissolved in dimethyl carbonate to obtain a coating slurry; a gravure roll was immersed in the slurry, and as the gravure roll rotated, the slurry filled pits on the surface of the gravure roll; the slurry on the surface of the gravure roll was scraped off with a scraper, leaving only the slurry in the pits; and when the gravure roll was transferred to the position of contact with a base film (a porous polyethylene film with a thickness of 7 µm), under the action of a pressing roll, the slurry in the pits was transferred to one of the surfaces of the base film. The slurry coating length was about 10 µm, and the coating thickness was 5 µm.
Na2SO4 was uniformly dissolved in deionized water to obtain an electrolyte solution with pH = 7, wherein the concentration of Na2SO4 was 1 mol/L.
The above-prepared positive electrode piece, separator, and negative electrode piece were stacked in sequence and wound to obtain a wound electrode assembly; and the wound electrode assembly was put into an aluminum casing, and after processes such as end cap welding, liquid injection, packaging, standing, and chemical formation, a cylindrical battery was obtained.
The preparation method for the battery was similar to that of Example 1, except that the preparation parameters of the separator were adjusted, as shown in Table 1 for details.
A freshly prepared separator was taken for testing, a sample was taken from a coating in any area of a separator by powder scraping, and the mass of the entire collected sample was weighed; and the entire collected sample is put into an ampoule, metered water is drawn with a syringe on an electric stirrer, the electric stirrer is then inserted into the ampoule, the electric stirrer and the ampoule are then placed together in a measuring position of a microcalorimeter, the water in the syringe is finally poured into the ampoule, and stirring and recording are started to obtain the total heat release during the test period. Heat of hydration of coating (J/g) = total heat release (J)/mass of sample (g). The test period was 48 hours, the test temperature was room temperature, and the microcalorimeter was TAM Air eight-channel microcalorimeter.
After the battery was fully discharged, the separator was disassembled, and a fully hardened area at a winding start end was taken for testing; the separator was placed in an oven at 45° C. for 30 min to remove excess electrolyte solution; thereafter, the separator was placed in the center position of a lower platen of YN-200-400 microcomputer compressive strength tester; and the instrument was started and loaded continuously at a constant speed until the separator was ruptured, and the failure load at this time was recorded. The loading speed was 0.4 MPa/s to 0.6 MPa/s.
The compressive strength of the coating was calculated according to the formula p = P/A, where p represented the compressive strength of the sample, P represented the failure load of the sample, and A represented the area of the sample.
The change in the internal temperature of the battery was monitored by sticking a temperature sensing wire onto the outer surface of the wound electrode assembly, and the highest temperature of heat generated inside the battery was recorded. The temperature detection instrument was KSD301 temperature sensor.
At 25° C., the battery was charged to 2.0 V with a constant current of ⅓ C and continued to be charged with a constant voltage until the current was 0.05 C; and after standing for 5 min, the battery was discharged to 0.5 V at a constant current of 4 C, and the discharge capacity at a rate of 4 C was recorded.
At 25° C., the battery was charged to 2.0 V with a constant current of ⅓ C and continued to be charged with a constant voltage until the current was 0.05 C, and at this time, the battery was in a fully charged state, and the charging capacity at this time was recorded, i.e. the charging capacity of the first lap; and after standing for 5 min, the battery was discharged to 0.5 V at a constant current of 4 C, which was a cyclic charge-discharge process, and the discharge capacity at this time was recorded, i.e., the discharge capacity of the first cycle. The battery was subjected to a cyclic charge-discharge test according to the above method, and the discharge capacity after each cycle was recorded.
Battery capacity retention rate upon 500 cycles (%) = discharge capacity at 500th cycle/discharge capacity at 1st cycle × 100%.
Table 2 provided the performance test results of Examples 1-19 and Comparative Examples 1 and 2.
As can be seen from the test results in Table 2, after the coating containing the hydraulic inorganic material in the present application was soaked in the electrolyte solution, the hydraulic inorganic material in the coating could react with the solvent water and cause the coating to be fully hardened, thereby significantly increasing the tensile strength of the separator. Therefore, the separator was less likely to deform during battery formation and charge-discharge cycling, thereby effectively inhibiting the collapse of the central hole and the growth of dendrites, thus improving the safety performance and cycle performance of the battery. After the coating containing the hydraulic inorganic material in the present application was soaked in the electrolyte solution, an appropriate amount of heat could also be released, thereby increasing the transmission speed of active ions between the positive and negative electrodes of the battery and improving the rate performance of the battery.
In Comparative Example 2, although the alumina ceramic coating provided on the surface of the base film could increase the compressive strength of the separator to a certain extent, the compressive strength of the separator was relatively low, which could not effectively suppress the collapse of the central hole and has less effect on improving the cycle performance of the battery.
The above descriptions are only specific implementations of the present application; however, the scope of protection of the present application is not limited thereto. Various equivalent modifications or substitutions can be readily conceivable to any skilled person who is familiar with the technical field within the technical scope disclosed in the present application, and these modifications or substitutions should all be covered within the scope of protection of the present application. Therefore, the scope of protection of the present application should be defined by the scope of protection of the claims.
