The present disclosure relates to an electrode plate, an electrode assembly, and a rechargeable battery including the same.
A rechargeable battery is manufactured in various shapes. Among these rechargeable batteries, a pouch battery may include an electrode assembly having a cathode plate, an anode plate, and an insulating separator interposed therebetween, and may also include a thin flexible pouch accommodating the electrode assembly. The pouch may accommodate the electrode assembly in its inner space.
The electrode assembly of the rechargeable battery may be largely divided into a winding type and a stacking type based on its structure. The stacking type may have good structural safety and suitable space utilization, and has been widely applied to a small- or medium-sized vehicle or the like. The stacking-type rechargeable battery may be a stack of the plurality of electrode plates and the separators.
A current collector layer applied to an electrode of the rechargeable battery (e.g., a cathode or an anode), may usually be a thin film made of electrically conductive copper, aluminum, nickel (Ni), stainless steel (SS), or the like. For example, a commercialized lithium-ion battery may use a copper foil current collector layer for the anode and an aluminum foil current collector layer for the cathode.
In recent years, the current collector layer having metal films coated on both surfaces of a resin has also been used, rather than the entire current collector layer made of copper or aluminum, to lower the manufacturing cost and weight of the rechargeable battery.
The present disclosure provides an electrode plate where electricity may be conducted between the electrode plates adjacent to each other, an electrode assembly and a rechargeable battery including the same.
However, the aspects of the present disclosure are not limited to the above, and other aspects of the present disclosure that are not mentioned herein will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art from the following description of the present disclosure.
According to one or more embodiments, provided is an electrode plate including an electrode plate layer, a current collector layer including a base layer, a first conductive layer and a second conductive layer respectively on an upper surface of the base layer and a lower surface of the base layer, a current collector part having at least one surface on which the electrode plate layer is located, an extension part extending outwardly from the current collector part, and a bent part connected to the extension part, and bent twice or more for the first conductive layer to contact the second conductive layer.
The base layer may include polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

According to one or more embodiments, provided is a rechargeable battery including the electrode assembly described above, and a case accommodating the electrode assembly.
As set forth above, according to the present disclosure, the electrode plate included in the electrode assembly may include the current collector layer including the bent part. The first conductive layer of any one current collector layer may be connected to the second conductive layer.
As the bent parts of the plurality of electrode plates are connected to each other, the first electrode plates and the second electrode plates may respectively be electrically connected to each other in the electrode assembly.
As such, the electrode assembly according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure does not need to perform the conduction process that uses additional folding of a foil and inserting the foil between the electrode plates one by one, as in the prior art. Therefore, the electrode assembly of the present disclosure may achieve not only reduced manufacturing time but also lower manufacturing cost.

Hereinafter, the description describes a rechargeable battery including an electrode plate in detail with reference to the attached drawings before describing the electrode plate according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure.
In stacked electrode plates using a resin-metal composite substrate, as described above, the entire electrode plate may not be utilized, or may not be electrically active if a plurality of substrate tabs are welded using a prior art method.
In the resin-metal composite substrate, the metal films may be located on both surfaces of a resin sheet. However, the resin may have low conductivity, which may make it difficult to electrically connect both the surfaces to each other. For example, in the stacked electrode plates using the plurality of electrode plates, their uncoated parts may be joined together and welded to an electrode terminal. However, the metal film may have only one surface in contact therewith, rather than both surfaces conducting electricity to each other, thus making the welding impractical or impossible.

The electrode assembly 200 may include a plurality of electrode plates 210 and 220 and a separator 230. The plurality of electrode plates 210 and 220 may include a first electrode plate 210 and a second electrode plate 220. The electrode assembly 200 may be a stack including the first electrode plates 210, the second electrode plates 220, and the separators 230 being repeatedly wound or stacked. For example, the electrode assembly 200 may be a stacked type where the electrode plates 210 and 220 are stacked in a plurality of layers. In one or more embodiments, the electrode assembly 200 may be a repeatedly wound jelly-roll type. The present disclosure describes that the electrode assembly 200 is the stacked type as an example.
In one or more embodiments, a manufacturing process of the stacked type electrode assembly 200 may generally involve a primary stacking process and a secondary stacking process.
In the primary stacking process, full cathodes (or double-sided cathodes) and full anodes (or double-sided anodes) may be stacked. The full cathodes may be the remaining ones of the plurality of first electrode plates 210 except for the outermost first electrode plate 210A. In one or more embodiments, the full anodes may be the second electrode plates 220.
In the secondary stacking process, half cathodes (or one-sided cathodes) may be stacked on one or more of the two outermost sides in a stacking direction. The half cathode may be the outermost first electrode plate 210A of the first electrode plates 210.

The full cathode or the full anode is the electrode where an active material is coated on both surfaces of a substrate. The half cathode is the electrode where an electrode plate layer is located only on one surface of the current collector layer. The electrode plate layer may be an active material layer. The description omits details of the full cathode, the full anode, and the half cathode.
The separator 230 may be interposed between the first electrode plate 210 and the second electrode plate 220. The separator 230 may reduce or prevent the likelihood of a short circuit occurring between the first electrode plate 210 and the second electrode plate 220, and enable movements of lithium ions. To this end, the separator 230 may be relatively larger than the current collector layer.
A material of the separator 230 may be, for example, polyethylene, polypropylene, or a composite film of polyethylene and polypropylene, and is not limited thereto.
The separator 230 may be cut into unit lengths, and may be located between the first electrode plate 210 and the second electrode plate 220. One ribbon-shaped separator 230 may be located in a zigzag shape between the first electrode plate 210 and the second electrode plate 220. In one or more embodiments, the separator 230 may be wound between the first electrode plate 210 and the second electrode plate 220 in one direction.
As such, the separator 230 is not limited to any given form. The separator 230 may be cut into unit lengths, and may be located between the first electrode plate 210 and the second electrode plate 220.
The case 300 may accommodate the electrode assembly 200. The electrode assembly 200 described above may be accommodated in the case 300 together with electrolyte.
The case 300 as described above may be any one of a pouch type, a cylindrical type, and a square type. The pouch-type case 300 may be manufactured by bending plate-shaped exterior materials to face each other, then pressing or drawing one surface, and having a recess defined in one surface.
The electrode assembly 200 may be accommodated in the recess, in one or more embodiments. A sealing part 310 may be located in an outer periphery of the recess, and the sealing part 310 may be sealed using a method, such as heat fusion, while the electrode assembly 200 is accommodated in the recess.
In one or more embodiments, in the plurality of electrode plates, the first electrode plate 210 described above may be the anode, and the second electrode plate 220 may be the cathode, or vice versa. The first electrode plate 210 and the second electrode plate 220 may be electrically connected to the outside of the rechargeable battery 100 through a strip terminal 250. In one or more embodiments, an insulating tape 240 may be attached to a portion of the strip terminal 250 that contacts the case 300. The insulating tape 240 may reduce or prevent the likelihood of the strip terminal 250 and the case 300 conducting electricity to each other.
Hereinafter, the description describes the electrode assembly 200 according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure in more detail with reference to the drawings.

Based on its internal structure, the current collector layer 201 may include a base layer E, and a first conductive layer F1 and a second conductive layer F2 respectively located on the lower and upper surfaces of the base layer E.
The base layer E may include, for example, polyethylene terephthalate (PET). In one or more embodiments, the base layer E may include, for example, one or more of polyamide, polyimide, polyimide, polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene naphthalate, polycarbonate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene propylene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer, polyvinyl alcohol, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene fluoride, polytetrafluoroethylene, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, polyacetylene, silicone rubber, polyoxymethylene, polyphenylene ether, polyphenylene sulfide, polyethylene glycol, polysulfur nitride, polyphenylene, polypyrrole, polyaniline, polythiophene, polypyridine, cellulose, starch, protein, epoxy resin, phenol resin, derivatives thereof, crosslinked products thereof, or copolymers thereof.
In one or more embodiments, the base layer E may further include an additive. The additive may include one or more of a metallic material or an inorganic non-metallic material. For example, the metallic material additive may be one or more of aluminum, aluminum alloy, copper, copper alloy, nickel, nickel alloy, titanium, titanium alloy, iron, iron alloy, silver, or a silver alloy.
In one or more embodiments, the inorganic non-metallic material additive may be one or more of a carbon-based material, aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide, silicon nitride, silicon carbide, boron nitride, silicates, or titanium oxide, and may be, for example, one or more of a glass material, a ceramic material, or a ceramic composite material. The carbon-based material additive may be, for example, one or more of graphite, superconducting carbon, acetylene black, carbon black, KETJENBLACK, carbon dots, carbon nanotubes, graphene, or carbon nanofibers (KETJENBLACK® being a registered trademark of AKZO NOBEL CHEMICALS B.V., Netherlands).
In one or more embodiments, the additive may further include the carbon-based material coated with the metallic material. For example, the additive may be one or more of graphite powders coated with nickel or carbon fibers coated with nickel.
In one or more embodiments, each of the first conductive layer F1 and the second conductive layer F2 may include aluminum. Each of the first conductive layer F1 and the second conductive layer F2 may include one or more of the metallic material, a carbon-based conductive material, or a conductive polymer material.
In one or more embodiments, based on its external shape, the current collector layer 201 described above may include a current collector part 201a, an extension part 201b, and a bent part 201c.
The current collector part 201a may have at least one surface on which the electrode plate layer 202 is coated. For example, the current collector part 201a may have a square plate shape. For example, referring to
In one or more embodiments, the electrode plate layer 202 may be coated on an entirety of the current collector part 201a. The current collector part 201a may not include the uncoated part, and the extension part 201b described below may be the uncoated part.
The extension part 201b may be connected to the current collector part 201a, and may extend outwardly from the current collector part 201a. For example, the extension part 201b may have a ribbon shape.
The bent part 201c may be connected with the extension part 201b. The bent part 201c may be bent twice or more for the first conductive layer F1 to contact the second conductive layer F2. For convenience of explanation,
In one or more embodiments, as described above, the plurality of electrode plates 210 and 220 may include the first electrode plate 210 and the second electrode plate 220, and the current collector layer 201 of each of the first electrode plate 210 and the second electrode plate 220 may include the extension part 201b and the bent part 201c.
The current collector layer 201 included in each of the plurality of electrode plates 210 and 220 may have the adjacent bent parts 201c coupled to each other in a vertical direction.
If the electrode assembly 200 is the stacked type, the first electrode plate 210 and the second electrode plate 220 may be alternately stacked while having the separator 230 interposed therebetween. The plurality of first electrode plates 210 and the plurality of second electrode plates 220 may be provided.
The drawings show that three first electrode plates 210 and three second electrode plates 220 are respectively arranged, but the present disclosure is not limited thereto, and the number of the first and second electrode plates 210 and 220 may be changed based on a design of the rechargeable battery 100.
In the electrode assembly 200 according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the bent parts 201c of the first electrode plate 210 may be parallel to each other in the vertical direction, and the bent parts 201c of the second electrode plate may be parallel to each other in the vertical direction. In one or more embodiments, the bent part 201c of the first electrode plate 210 may be spaced apart from the bent part 201c of the second electrode plate 220 in a horizontal direction.
In one or more embodiments, the extension part 201b may connect the current collector part 201a and the bent part 201c to each other. The extension parts 201b of the first electrode plate 210 may be parallel to each other in the vertical direction, and the extension parts 201b of the second electrode plate 220 may be parallel to each other in the vertical direction.
In one or more embodiments, the bent parts 201c may be coupled to each other by welding. For example, the plurality of the bent part 201c may be assembled together and coupled to each other by the welding method, such as laser, resistance welding, or ultrasonic welding.
In one or more embodiments, a length of the extension part 201b may be less than a length of the bent part 201c. In one or more embodiments, the length of the extension part 201b may be more than the length of the bent part 201c. The length of the bent part 201c and the extension part 201b may be changed based on the design of the electrode assembly 200, and these parts are not limited to any given length.
The electrode assembly 200 described above may have the bent part 201c bent twice or more. The plurality of electrode plates 210 and 220 may conduct electricity to each other even if only the bent parts 201c are welded to each other, while the extension parts 201b are not welded to each other. In one or more embodiments, the extensions parts 201b may further be welded to each other to improve a coupling force between the electrode plates, but the present disclosure is not limited thereto.

In a rechargeable battery including a resin-metal composite substrate, the metal film may have only respective ones of the surfaces contacting each other if the uncoated parts of the electrodes are welded to each other. To solve this problem, its manufacturing process may be increased by further including a conduction process for allowing the metal films to conduct electricity to each other.
