Claims
- 1. In a method of coating a conductive substrate serving as a cathode, which method comprises passing electric current between an anode and said cathode in electrical contact with a water-dispersed composition, the improvement wherein the water-dispersed composition is a water-dispersible resin which is electrodepositable on the cathode and which contains in the resin molecule amine salt groups and/or onium salt groups, said resin being prepared from polyglycidyl ethers of polyphenols and which contains in the resin molecule N-heterocyclic moieties obtained by reacting said polyepoxide with an N-heterocyclic material containing a 5 or 6-membered ring and containing ##STR20## moieties.
- 2. The method of claim 1 in which the cataphoretic resin contains onium salt groups selected from the class consisting of quaternary ammonium, quaternary phosphonium and ternary sulfonium salt groups.
- 3. The method of claim 2 in which the cataphoretic resin is formed from reacting:
- (A) a polyepoxide having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency greater than 1,
- (B) an N-heterocyclic material containing a 5 or 6-membered ring and containng ##STR21## moieties, (C) a reactant selected from the group consisting of:
- (1) an amine acid salt,
- (2) a sulfide acid mixture,
- (3) a phosphine acid mixture.
- 4. The method of claim 1 in which the polyphenol is Bisphenol A.
- 5. The method of claim 1 in which the N-heterocyclic material contains ##STR22## moieties.
- 6. The method of claim 1 in which the N-heterocyclic material has the following structural formula: ##STR23## wherein X is a bivalent radical which is necessary to complete a 5-membered or 6-membered unsubstituted or substituted heterocyclic ring.
- 7. The method of claim 1 in which the N-heterocyclic material is of the formula: ##STR24## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each represent a hydrogen atom, or an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, or wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 together form a bivalent aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical.
- 8. The method of claim 1 in which the N-heterocyclic material is of the formula: ##STR25## wherein X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 independently of one another each denote a bivalent radical which is necessary to complete a 5-membered or 6-membered unsubstituted or substituted heterocyclic ring and Y represents a bivalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aryl, or araliphatic radical; Y also represents moieties containing ester linkages, amido linkages and hydroxy-containing polyether moieties.
- 9. The method of claim 1 in which the water-dispersible, cataphoretic resin is in combination with a blocked isocyanate.
- 10. The method of claim 1 in which the cataphoretic resin contains blocked isocyanates in the resin molecule.
