Claims

- 25. An electrolyte-containing system comprising:
a nonaqueous electrolyte solution including a solvent and a salt; and a flame retardant material that is selected to be substantially immiscible in said solution.
- 26. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 25, wherein said solution has a salt concentration between about 0.1 M and about 3.0 M.
- 27. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 25, wherein said solution has a salt concentration between about 0.5 M and about 2.0 M.
- 28. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 25, wherein said solvent includes at least one carbonate selected from the group consisting of: cyclic carbonates, linear carbonates, and mixtures thereof.
- 29. The electrolyte-containing system of claim 28, wherein said at least one carbonate comprises a carbonate selected from the group consisting of: a cyclic carbonate containing an alkylene group with 2 to 5 carbon atoms and a linear carbonate containing a hydrocarbon group with 1 to 5 carbon atoms.
- 30. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 25, wherein said solvent includes at least one cyclic carbonate represented by the formula
- 31. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 25, wherein said solvent includes at least one linear carbonate represented by the formula
- 32. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 25, wherein said solvent comprises two or more solvents.
- 33. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 25, wherein said salt is selected from the group consisting of: LiPF6, LiBF4, LiOSO2R1,
- 34. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 25, wherein said flame retardant material comprises a halogen-containing compound.
- 35. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 34, wherein said halogen-containing compound contains at least one member selected from the group consisting of: branched or unbranched alkyl, cyclic alkyl, ether, aminoalkyl, and aliphatic heterocyclic compound groups in which one or more hydrogen atoms are substituted by a halogen selected from the group consisting of: fluorine, chlorine, and bromine.
- 36. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 34, wherein said halogen-containing compound contains at least one member selected from the group consisting of: perfluoroalkyl groups, perfluoroaminoalkyl groups, perfluoroether groups, and mixtures thereof.
- 37. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 34, wherein said halogen-containing compound is present in an amount ranging from about 1 to about 99% by weight of said solvent.
- 38. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 34, wherein said halogen-containing compound is present in an amount ranging from about 1 to about 70% by weight of said solvent.
- 39. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 34, wherein said halogen-containing compound is present in an amount ranging from about 10 to about 60% by weight of said solvent.
- 40. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 34, wherein said halogen-containing compound is present in an amount ranging from about 20 to about 40% by weight of said solvent.
- 41. An electrolyte-containing system comprising:
a flame retardant material; and a nonaqueous electrolyte solution that is selected to be substantially immiscible with said flame retardant material.
- 42. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 41, wherein said flame retardant material comprises a halogen-containing compound.
- 43. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 42, wherein said halogen-containing compound contains at least one member selected from the group consisting of: branched or unbranched alkyl, cyclic alkyl, ether, aminoalkyl, and aliphatic heterocyclic compound groups in which one or more hydrogen atoms are substituted by a halogen selected from the group consisting of: fluorine, chlorine, and bromine.
- 44. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 42, wherein said halogen-containing compound contains at least one member selected from the group consisting of: perfluoroalkyl groups, perfluoroaminoalkyl groups, perfluoroether groups, and mixtures thereof.
- 45. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 41, wherein said solution has a salt concentration between about 0.5 M and about 2.0 M.
- 46. The electrolyte-containing system according to claim 41, wherein said solution comprises two or more solvents.
- 47. A method of making an electrolyte-containing system for use with an energy storage device, comprising the steps of:
a) dissolving a salt in a nonaqueous solvent to form an electrolyte solution; and then b) combining the solution with a flame retardant material to form two separate liquid phases.
- 48. The method according to claim 47, wherein said dissolving step comprises forming a solution having a salt concentration between about 0.5 M and about 2.0 M.
- 49. The method according to claim 47, wherein said dissolving step comprises dissolving a salt in two or more solvents.
- 50. The method according to claim 47, further comprising the step of:
selecting a flame retardant material to be substantially immiscible with the solution.
- 51. The method according to claim 47, wherein said combining step comprises combining the solution with a flame retardant such that the flame retardant is present in an amount ranging from about 1 to about 70% by weight of the solvent.
- 52. The method according to claim 47, wherein said combining step comprises combining the solution with a flame retardant such that the flame retardant is present in an amount ranging from about 10 to about 60% by weight of said solvent.
- 53. The method according to claim 47, wherein said combining step comprises combining the solution with a flame retardant such that the flame retardant is present in an amount ranging from about 20 to about 40% by weight of said solvent.
