Claims
- 1. An electrolytic cell comprising an anode in an anode compartment, spaced apart from a cathode in a cathode compartment by an ion exchange membrane or a diaphragm, wherein the cathode comprises:
- a first electrically conductive porous layer having a plurality of interconnecting passageways therethrough with diameters of from about 7 to about 12 microns; and
- a second electrically conductive porous layer having a plurality of interconnecting passageways therethrough with diameters of from about 0.1 to about 3 microns; the layers being joined into a wall structure in a manner so that at least a portion of the passageways of the first layer interconnect with at least a portion of the passageways of the second layer,
- said wall being in the shape of a pocket, wherein at least a portion of an inner surface of the pocket is a surface of the first layer and at least a portion of an outer surface of the pocket is a surface of the second layer.
- 2. The electrolytic cell of claim 1 wherein the first and second electrically conductive layers of the cathode are metallic.
- 3. The electrolytic cell of claim 1 wherein the first and the second conductive layers of the cathode are comprised of an aggregation of particles.
- 4. The electrolytic cell of claim 3 wherein the particles are metallic particles.
- 5. The electrolytic cell of claim 4 wherein the metallic particles are sintered.
- 6. The electrolytic cell of claim 5 wherein the sintered metallic particles consist essentially of nickel.
- 7. The electrolytic cell of claim 1 wherein the diameter of the interconnecting passageways of the first layer of the cathode is about 10 microns.
- 8. The electrolytic cell of claim 1 or 7 wherein the diameter of the interconnecting passageways of the second layer of the cathode is about 2 microns.
- 9. The electrolytic cell of claim 1 wherein the thickness of the first layer of the cathode is from about 0.051 to about 0.23 centimeters.
- 10. The electrolytic cell of claim 1 or 9 wherein the thickness of the second layer is from about 0.025 to about 0.15 centimeters.
- 11. The electrolytic cell of claim 1 wherein the first and the second electrically conductive layers of the cathode are catalytically active.
- 12. The electrolytic cell of claim 11 wherein the catalytically active material is coated onto the surfaces of the porous layers of the cathode.
- 13. The electrolytic cell of claim 11 wherein the catalytically active material is silver.
- 14. The electrolytic cell of claim 13 wherein the silver is present in an amount of from about 0.1 to about 1 ounce per square foot of surface area of the cathode.
- 15. The electrolytic cell of claim 1 wherein the pocket-shaped cathode includes an inner support having passageways of a sufficient size and configuration to allow a gas to contact a substantial portion of the inner surface of the pocket.
- 16. The electrolytic cell of claim 1 wherein the pocket-shaped structure includes an external support having passageways of a sufficient size and configuration to allow an catholyte solution to contact a substantial portion of the outer surface of the pocket.
- 17. An electrolytic cell comprising a plurality of the electrolytic cells of claim 1.
- 18. An electrolytic cell comprising an anode in an anode compartment, spaced apart from a cathode in a cathode compartment, by an ion exchange membrane or a diaphragm, wherein the anode comprises:
- a first electrically conductive porous layer having a plurality of interconnecting passageways therethrough with diameters of from about 7 to about 12 microns; and
- a second electrically conductive porous layer having a plurality of interconnecting passageways therethrough with diameters of from about 0.1 to about 5 microns; the layers being joined into a wall structure in a manner so that at least a portion of the passageways of the first layer interconnect with at least a portion of the passageways of the second layer;
- said wall being in the shape of a pocket, wherein at least a portion of an inner surface of the pocket is a surface of the first layer and at least a portion of an outer surface of the pocket is a surface of the second layer.
- 19. An electrode comprising:
- a first electrically conductive, catalytically active porous layer having a plurality of interconnecting passageways therethrough with diameters of from about 7 to about 12 microns; and
- a second electrically conductive, catalytically active porous layer having a plurality of interconnecting passageways therethrough with diameters of from about 0.1 to about 5 microns; the layers being joined into a wall structure in a manner so that at least a portion of the passageways of the first layer interconnect with at least a portion of the passageways of the second layer,
- said wall being in the shape of a pocket, wherein at least a portion of an inner surface of the pocket is a surface of the first layer and at least a portion of an outer surface of the pocket is a surface of the second layer; and wherein the catalytic activity is provided by silver.
- 20. The electrode of claim 19 wherein the silver is present in the amount of from about 0.1 to about 1.0 ounce per square foot of surface area of said electrode.
