Claims
- 1. A power supply for an electromagnetic force system, for connection to and energizing a work coil positioned adjacent a work piece, the power supply comprising:
a slow current pulse system comprising:
a first triggering means for discharging said slow current pulse system through the blocking inductor at a selected time; and a first capacitor bank; a fast current pulse system, wherein the fast current pulse is of opposing polarity to the slow current pulse comprising:
a second triggering means for discharging the fast current pulse system through said coil such that the current through the coil decreases rapidly and creates a pulse of tension force on the work piece; and a second capacitor bank; and a blocking inductor.
- 2. The power supply of claim 1 wherein the slow current pulse system comprises a dumping circuit.
- 3. The power supply of claim 2 wherein the dumping circuit comprises a first resistive load across the first capacitor bank.
- 4. The power supply of claim 3 wherein the first resistive load comprises a first voltage divider.
- 5. The power supply of claim 4 wherein the first voltage divider presents a first voltage difference indicative of the current in the first resistive load.
- 6. The power supply of claim 2 wherein the dumping circuit comprises a capacitor dump shunt the first capacitor bank.
- 7. The power supply of claim 6 wherein the capacitor dump shunt comprises a first switching means.
- 8. The power supply of claim 7 wherein the first switching means comprises a triggered semiconductor.
- 9. The power supply of claim 8 wherein the semiconductor is an SCR.
- 10. The power supply of claim 8 wherein the semiconductor is a transistor.
- 11. The power supply of claim 10 wherein the transistor is an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor.
- 12. The power supply of claim 7 wherein the capacitor dump shunt comprises a second resistive load in series with the first switching means.
- 13. The power supply of claim 12 wherein the second resistive load comprises a second voltage divider.
- 14. The power supply of claim 13 wherein the second voltage divider presents a second voltage difference indicative of the current in the second resistive load.
- 15. The power supply of claim 14 wherein the slow pulse system comprises a first fly-back diode across a series comprising the first triggering means and the first capacitor bank.
- 16. The power supply of claim 7 wherein the slow pulse system comprises a second fly-back diode connected in anti-parallel across the first triggering means.
- 17. The power supply of claim 1 comprising a clamping means for clamping the current through the working coil following discharge of the fast pulse system at a selected level
- 18. The power supply of claim 17 wherein the clamping means comprises at least one first diode in series across the blocking inductor shunting the current from the discharge of the fast pulse system.
- 19. The power supply of claim 1 wherein the fast pulse system comprises a triggered crowbar across the second triggering means and the second capacitor bank.
- 20. The power supply of claim 19 wherein the triggered crowbar comprises a third triggering means.
- 21. The power supply of claim 20 wherein the third triggering means comprising a gate turn-off thyristor.
- 22. The power supply of claim 21 wherein the gate turn-off thyristor is an anode short gate turn-off thyristor.
- 23. The power supply of claim 20 wherein the third triggering means comprises a distributed gate thyristor.
- 24. The power supply of claim 21 wherein the third triggering means comprises at least one transistor in parallel.
- 25. The power supply of claim 24 wherein the transistor is an insulated gate bipolar transistor.
- 26. The power supply of claim 20 wherein each third triggering means comprises a third fly-back diode across each third triggering means in parallel.
- 27. The power supply of claim 26 wherein the third fly-back diode comprises at least one diode in series.
- 28. The power supply of claim 27 wherein the at least third fly-back diode in series comprises at least one fast recovery epitaxial diode.
- 29. The power supply of claim 20 wherein the crowbar comprises at least one-second diode in series with the third triggering means.
- 30. The power supply of claim 1 wherein the fast pulse system comprises a triggered vacuum spark-gap in series with the second capacitor bank.
- 31. The power supply of claim 1 wherein the fast pulse system comprises a dumping circuit.
- 32. The power supply of claim 31 wherein the dumping circuit comprises a third resistive load across the second capacitor bank.
- 33. The power supply of claim 32 wherein the third resistive load comprises a third voltage divider.
- 34. The power supply of claim 33 wherein the third voltage divider presents a third voltage difference indicative of the current in the third resistive load.
- 35. The power supply of claim 31 wherein the dumping circuit comprises a capacitor dump shunt the first capacitor bank.
- 36. The power supply of claim 35 wherein the capacitor dump shunt comprises a second switching means.
- 37. The power supply of claim 36 wherein the second switching means comprises a triggered semiconductor.
- 38. The power supply of claim 37 wherein the semiconductor is an SCR.
- 39. The power supply of claim 37 wherein the semiconductor is a transistor.
- 40. The power supply of claim 39 wherein the transistor is an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor.
- 41. The power supply of claim 35 wherein the capacitor dump shunt comprises a fourth resistive load in series with the second switching means.
- 42. The power supply of claim 41 wherein the fourth resistive load comprises a fourth voltage divider.
- 43. The power supply of claim 42 wherein the fourth voltage divider presents a fourth voltage difference indicative of the current in the fourth resistive load.
- 44. The power supply of claim 1 wherein the fast pulse system comprises a fast bank charger in parallel to the second capacitor bank.
- 45. The power supply of claim 44 wherein the fast pulse system comprises a third resistive load in series with the fast bank charger.
- 46. The power supply of claim 44 wherein the fast pulse system comprises a fifth fly-back diode in parallel across the fast bank charger.
