Claims
- 1. A coil assembly for an electromagnetic operator, the coil assembly comprising:a coil support including first and second axially spaced annular recesses defined between upper and lower flanges and separated from one another by an central flange; first and second lead guides on the central flange; a first coil wound in the first annular recess and having a first lead disposed in the first lead guide; and a second coil wound in the second annular recess and having a second lead disposed in the second lead guide.
- 2. The coil assembly of claim 1, wherein the first and second lead guides each includes an elongated groove for receiving a coil lead.
- 3. The coil assembly of claim 1, further comprising a control circuit board supported by the coil support, and wherein leads from the first and second coils are electrically coupled to the control circuit board.
- 4. The coil assembly of claim 1, wherein the first and second leads are electrically coupled to energizing circuitry to apply the same electrical potential to the first and second leads.
- 5. The coil assembly of claim 1, wherein the coil support is mounted on a metallic base, the base defining a core for the coil assembly.
- 6. The coil assembly of claim 5, wherein the coil support has a central aperture, and wherein the base includes an extension projecting into the aperture and at least one side panel extending in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of the extension.
- 7. A coil support for an electromagnetic operator, the coil support comprising:a first portion configured to have a first coil wound thereon; a second portion axially spaced from the first portion and configured to have a second coil wound thereon; a third portion intermediate the first and second portions, the third portion having a first guide to direct a first lead from the first coil and a second guide to direct a second lead from the second coil.
- 8. The coil support of claim 7, wherein the first and second guides each comprise a groove for receiving a coil lead.
- 9. The coil support of claim 7, wherein the first portion comprises an annular recess between the third portion and a first flange and the second portion comprises an annular recess between the third portion and a second flange.
- 10. The coil support of claim 7, further comprising a first coil wound on the first portion and presenting the first lead and a second coil wound on the second portion and presenting the second lead.
- 11. The coil support of claim 10, further comprising a circuit board secured thereto, and wherein the first and second leads are electrically coupled to the circuit board.
- 12. The coil support of claim 10, wherein the first and second leads are electrically coupled to energizing circuitry to apply the same electrical potential to the first and second leads.
- 13. The coil support of claim 7, further comprising a yoke, wherein the first, second and third portions are secured to the yoke, and wherein the yoke comprises a side flange extending around the first portion of the coil support to enhance the magnetic field generated by the first coil.
- 14. The coil support of claim 13, wherein the side flange extends around the second portion of the coil support to enhance the magnetic field generated by the first and second coils.
- 15. The coil support of claim 13, further comprising a core secured to the yoke, the core projecting axially into a central aperture through the first, second, and third portions of the coil support.
- 16. The coil support of claim 7, wherein the first, second and third portions form a non-conductive, integral bobbin configured to receive the first aid and second coils.
- 17. A method of assembling a coil assembly for an electromagnetic operator, the method comprising the acts of:disposing a first coil around a first portion of a coil support; disposing a second coil around a second portion of the coil support, the second portion being axially spaced from the first portion; directing a first lead from the first coil via a first lead guide disposed intermediate the first and second portions of the coil support; and directing a second lead from the second coil via a second lead guide disposed intermediate the first and second portions of the coil support.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the first portion comprises a first annular recess and disposing a first coil comprises winding the first coil around the coil support in the first annular recess.
- 19. The method of claim 18, wherein the second portion comprises a second annular recess and disposing a second coil comprises winding the second coil around the coil support in the second annular recess.
- 20. The method of claim 17, comprising securing a circuit board to the coil support.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein directing a first lead comprises disposing the first lead in the first lead guide to direct the first lead from the first coil to the circuit board.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein directing a second lead comprises disposing the second lead in the second lead guide to direct the second lead from the second coil to the circuit board.
- 23. The method of claim 17, further comprising the act of securing the coil support to a metallic base.
