Claims
- 1. A composition of matter comprising (a) an electron emitting substance, and (b) an expansion material, the volume of which is expandable by a factor of at least about 1.03 times.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the volume of the expansion material is expandable by a factor of about 1.03 to about 200 times.
- 3. A composition of matter comprising (a) an electron emitting substance, and (b) an intercalation compound.
- 4. A composition according to claims 1 and 3 wherein the intercalation compound is a graphite, clay or vermiculite.
- 5. A composition according to claims 1 and 3 wherein the electron emitting substance is acicular carbon.
- 6. A composition according to claims 1 and 3 wherein the electron emitting substance is a carbon nanotube.
- 7. A composition according to claims 1 and 3 wherein the content of the electron emitting substance is about 0.1 to about 20 weight percent, based on the total weight of the composition.
- 8. A composition according to claims 1 and 3 further comprising a conductive metal.
- 9. A composition according to claims 1 and 3 further comprising one or more of a photoinitiator, a developable binder and a photohardenable monomer.
- 10. A composition according to claims 1 and 3 in the form of a printable paste.
- 11. A composition according to claims 1 and 3 in the form of an electron emitting film.
- 12. An electron emitting film comprising (a) an electron emitting substance, and (b) an expansion material, wherein the electron emitting film has been ruptured by expansion of the expansion material.
- 13. An electron emitting film according to claim 12 wherein the electron emitting substance is a single-wall carbon nanotube.
- 14. An electron emitting film according to claim 12 wherein the expansion material is an intercalated graphite, clay or vermiculite.
- 15. An electron emitting film according to claim 12 further comprising a conductive metal.
- 16. An electron emitting film according to claim 12 further comprising one or more of a photoinitiator, a developable binder and a photohardenable monomer.
- 17. A field emission triode, a field emission display, a lighting device, or a vacuum electronic device comprising an electron emitting film according to claim 12.
- 18. A process for fabricating an electron emitting film, comprising
(a) forming an electron emitting film from a composition that comprises (i) an electron emitting substance, and (ii) an expansion material, the volume of which is expandable by a factor of at least about 1.03 times; and (b) expanding the expansion material.
- 19. A process according to claim 18 wherein the volume of the expansion material is expandable by a factor of about 1.03 to about 200 times.
- 20. A process according to claim 18 wherein the expansion material is expanded by heating.
- 21. A process according to claim 18 wherein the step of expanding the expansion material comprises a step of rupturing the film.
- 22. A process according to claim 18 wherein the step of forming an electron emitting film comprises screen printing a paste prepared from the composition of the electron emitting substance and the expansion material.
- 23. A process according to claim 18 further comprising a step of providing the electron emitting substance by growth from the catalytical decomposition of carbon-containing gases over small metal particles.
- 24. A process according to claim 18 further comprising a step of providing the electron emitting substance by laser irradiation.
- 25. A process according to claim 18 wherein the electron emitting substance is a carbon nanotube.
- 26. A process according to claim 18 wherein the expansion material is an intercalated graphite, clay or vermiculite.
