Claims
- 1. In an apparatus having at least one actuator means for adjusting at least one parameter within the apparatus in response to a first electrical signal which is an alternating electrical signal, the actuator means including a solenoid coil to which the first electrical signal is applied, a method for compensating for changes in temperature of the apparatus, comprising the steps of:
- (a) applying a second electrical signal of known magnitude to the solenoid coil which, at a predetermined operating temperature of the apparatus, is known to produce a predetermined current level;
- (b) sensing the amount of current actually flowing through the coil in response to the second electrical signal; and
- (c) determining difference between the amount of current sensed and the predetermined current level; and
- (d) adjusting the first electrical signal in response to the determined difference.
- 2. A method as in claim 1, in which the apparatus is a power-transmitting apparatus and the actuator means is a proportional modulation device which enables the one operating parameter to be adjusted to substantially any value within a selected range of values, and wherein
- steps (a) through (c) are performed immediately before the first electrical signal is applied to the solenoid coil.
- 3. A method as in claim 2, in which the first electrical signal is a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal, and the second signal is a PWM signal having a duty cycle which produces an average direct current (DC) value approximately equal to the nominal full voltage rating of the solenoid coil for a period of time sufficient to produce a stabilized current through the solenoid coil.
- 4. A method as in claim 3, in which the apparatus is for use in or with an off-road vehicle and the actuator means is a solenoid-operated hydraulic valve including and operated by said solenoid coil; and wherein
- the predetermined operating temperature is the nominal operating temperature of the apparatus.
- 5. A method as in claim 3, further comprising the steps of:
- (e) providing a microprocessor means, including memory means for program storage, for operating the power-transmitting apparatus in accordance with operating parameters stored in the memory means, with at least one of the stored operating parameters being a value representing the magnitude of the adjustment to be made in response to the determined difference between the amount of current sensed and the predetermined current level.
- 6. In an apparatus having at least one actuator means for adjusting at least one parameter within the apparatus in response to a first electrical signal which is an alternating electrical signal, the actuator means including a solenoid coil to which the first electrical signal is applied, an electronic control system for compensating for changes in temperature of the apparatus, comprising:
- (a) means for applying a second electrical signal of known magnitude to the solenoid coil which, at a predetermined operating temperature of the apparatus, is known to produce a predetermined current level;
- (b) means for sensing the amount of current actually flowing through the coil in response to the second electrical signal; and
- (c) means for determining difference between the amount of current sensed and the predetermined current level; and
- (d) means for adjusting the first electrical signal in response to the determined difference.
- 7. A system as in claim 6, in which the apparatus is a power-transmitting apparatus and said actuator means is a proportional modulation device which enables the one operating parameter to be adjusted to substantially any desired value within a selected range of values, and wherein
- steps (a) through (c) are performed immediately before the first electrical signal is applied to the solenoid coil.
- 8. A system as in claim 6, in which the first electrical signal is a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal, and the second signal is PWM signal having a duty cycle which produces an average direct current (DC) value approximately equal to the nominal full voltage rating of the solenoid coil for a period of time sufficient to produce a stabilized current through the solenoid coil.
- 9. A system as in claim 8, in which the apparatus is for use in or with an off-road vehicle and the actuator means is a solenoid-operated hydraulic valve including and operated by the solenoid coil; and wherein
- the predetermined operating temperature is the nominal operating temperature of the apparatus.
- 10. A system as in claim 9, further comprising:
- (e) microprocessor means, including memory means for program storage, for operating the power-transmitting apparatus in accordance with operating parameters stored in the memory means, with at least one of the stored operating parameters being a value representing the magnitude of the adjustment to be made in response to the determined difference between the amount of current sensed and the predetermined current level.
- 11. In an apparatus having at least one actuator means for adjusting at least one parameter within the apparatus in response to a first electrical signal which is an alternating signal, the actuator means including a solenoid coil to which the first electrical signal is applied, a method of determining the approximate operating temperature of the apparatus relative to a nominal operating temperature, comprising the steps of:
- (a) applying a second electrical signal of known magnitude to the solenoid coil which, at the nominal operating temperature of the apparatus, is known to produce a predetermined current level;
- (b) the amount of current actually flowing through the coil in response to the second electrical signal; and
- (c) comparing the amount of current sensed with the predetermined current level to determine the approximate operating temperature of the apparatus.
- 12. A method as in claim 11 wherein the apparatus is a power-transmitting apparatus, the actuator means is a proportional modulation device which enables the one operating parameter to be adjusted to substantially any desired value within a selected range of values, the first electrical signal is a pulse width modulated signal, and the second signal is a direct current signal having a voltage value approximately equal to the nominal full voltage rating of the solenoid coil.
- 13. A method as in claim 12 in which:
- the apparatus is for use in or with an off-road vehicle, and said actuator means is solenoid-operated proportional hydraulic valve including and operated by the solenoid coil; and
- steps (a) through (c) are performed immediately prior to the application of the first electrical signal to the solenoid coil.
- 14. In an apparatus having at least one actuator means for adjusting at least one parameter within the apparatus in response to a first electrical signal which is an alternating electrical signal the actuator means including a solenoid coil to which the first electrical signal is applied, a temperature sensing system for determining the approximate operating temperature of the apparatus relative to a predetermined temperature, the system comprising:
- means for applying a second electrical signal of known magnitude to the solenoid coil which, at the predetermined temperature, is known to produce a predetermined current level;
- means for sensing the amount of current actually flowing through the coil in response to the second electrical signal; and
- means for determining difference between the amount of current sensed and the predetermined current level; and
- means for adjusting the first electrical signal in response to the determined difference.
- 15. A system as in claim 14 wherein the apparatus is a power-transmitting apparatus, the actuator means is a proportional modulation device which enables one operating parameter of the device of the apparatus to be adjusted to substantially any value within a selected range of values, the first electrical signal is a pulse width modulated signal, and the second signal is a direct current signal having a voltage value approximately equal to the nominal full voltage rating of the solenoid coil.
- 16. A system as in claim 15 wherein:
- the apparatus is for use in or with an off-road vehicle, and the actuator means is a solenoid-operated hydraulic valve including and operated by the solenoid coil; and
- the means for comparing includes microprocessor means for digitally calculating the relative difference between the amount of current sensed and the predetermined current level, the predetermined current level being stored within said microprocessor means.
- 17. A system as in claim 14, wherein the predetermined temperature is the normal operating temperature of the apparatus.
