The disclosure relates to an electronic device including a protective structure for a flexible display.
In order to increase portability of an electronic device, the electronic device may provide various types of a display. The electronic device may include a deformable flexible display in order to provide the various types of a display form. The flexible display may be configured to be foldable, slidable, or rollable.
According to an aspect of the disclosure, an electronic device includes: a first housing; a second housing; a hinge structure configured to rotatably couple the first housing and the second housing with respect to a folding axis; a flexible display on the first housing and the second housing; a first flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) on the first housing and the hinge structure; a second FPCB on the second housing and the hinge structure, the second FPCB being spaced apart from the first FPCB; and a support plate between the flexible display and the first FPCB, the support plate being between the flexible display and the second FPCB, wherein at least one of a first area of the first FPCB facing a lateral surface of the second FPCB and a second area of the second FPCB facing a lateral surface of the first FPCB is at least partially recessed from a surface facing the support plate toward the hinge structure to be spaced apart from the support plate.
According to an aspect of the disclosure, an electronic device includes: a first housing; a second housing; a hinge structure configured to rotatably couple the first housing and the second housing; a flexible display on the first housing and the second housing; a first flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) on the first housing and the hinge structure; a second FPCB, disposed on the second housing and the hinge structure, spaced apart from the first FPCB; and a support plate disposed between the flexible display and the first FPCB and disposed between the flexible display and the second FPCB, wherein a first area of the first FPCB facing a lateral surface of the second FPCB is thinner than a second area of the first FPCB distinct from the first area of the first FPCB, and wherein a third area of the second FPCB facing a lateral surface of the first FPCB is thinner than a fourth area of the second FPCB distinct from the third area of the second FPCB.

The processor 120 may execute, for example, software (e.g., a program 140) to control at least one other component (e.g., a hardware or software component) of the electronic device 101 coupled with the processor 120, and may perform various data processing or computation. According to an embodiment, as at least part of the data processing or computation, the processor 120 may store a command or data received from another component (e.g., the sensor module 176 or the communication module 190) in volatile memory 132, process the command or the data stored in the volatile memory 132, and store resulting data in non-volatile memory 134. According to an embodiment, the processor 120 may include a main processor 121 (e.g., a central processing unit (CPU) or an application processor (AP)), or an auxiliary processor 123 (e.g., a graphics processing unit (GPU), a neural processing unit (NPU), an image signal processor (ISP), a sensor hub processor, or a communication processor (CP)) that is operable independently from, or in conjunction with, the main processor 121. For example, when the electronic device 101 includes the main processor 121 and the auxiliary processor 123, the auxiliary processor 123 may be adapted to consume less power than the main processor 121, or to be specific to a specified function. The auxiliary processor 123 may be implemented as separate from, or as part of the main processor 121.
The auxiliary processor 123 may control at least some of functions or states related to at least one component (e.g., the display module 160, the sensor module 176, or the communication module 190) among the components of the electronic device 101, instead of the main processor 121 while the main processor 121 is in an inactive (e.g., sleep) state, or together with the main processor 121 while the main processor 121 is in an active state (e.g., executing an application). According to an embodiment, the auxiliary processor 123 (e.g., an image signal processor or a communication processor) may be implemented as part of another component (e.g., the camera module 180 or the communication module 190) functionally related to the auxiliary processor 123. According to an embodiment, the auxiliary processor 123 (e.g., the neural processing unit) may include a hardware structure specified for artificial intelligence model processing. An artificial intelligence model may be generated by machine learning. Such learning may be performed, e.g., by the electronic device 101 where the artificial intelligence is performed or via a separate server (e.g., the server 108). Learning algorithms may include, but are not limited to, e.g., supervised learning, unsupervised learning, semi-supervised learning, or reinforcement learning. The artificial intelligence model may include a plurality of artificial neural network layers. The artificial neural network may be a deep neural network (DNN), a convolutional neural network (CNN), a recurrent neural network (RNN), a restricted boltzmann machine (RBM), a deep belief network (DBN), a bidirectional recurrent deep neural network (BRDNN), deep Q-network or a combination of two or more neural networks but the disclosure is not limited to the above examples. The artificial intelligence model may, additionally or alternatively, include a software structure other than the hardware structure.
The memory 130 may store various data used by at least one component (e.g., the processor 120 or the sensor module 176) of the electronic device 101. The various data may include, for example, software (e.g., the program 140) and input data or output data for a command related thereto. The memory 130 may include the volatile memory 132 or the non-volatile memory 134.
The program 140 may be stored in the memory 130 as software, and may include, for example, an operating system (OS) 142, middleware 144, or an application 146.
The input module 150 may receive a command or data to be used by another component (e.g., the processor 120) of the electronic device 101, from the outside (e.g., a user) of the electronic device 101. The input module 150 may include, for example, a microphone, a mouse, a keyboard, a key (e.g., a button), or a digital pen (e.g., a stylus pen).
The sound output module 155 may output sound signals to the outside of the electronic device 101. The sound output module 155 may include, for example, a speaker or a receiver. The speaker may be used for general purposes, such as playing multimedia or playing record. The receiver may be used for receiving incoming calls. According to an embodiment, the receiver may be implemented as separate from, or as part of the speaker.
The display module 160 may visually provide information to the outside (e.g., a user) of the electronic device 101. The display module 160 may include, for example, a display, a hologram device, or a projector and control circuitry to control a corresponding one of the display, hologram device, and projector. According to an embodiment, the display module 160 may include a touch sensor adapted to detect a touch, or a pressure sensor adapted to measure the intensity of force incurred by the touch.
The audio module 170 may convert a sound into an electrical signal and vice versa. According to an embodiment, the audio module 170 may obtain the sound via the input module 150, or output the sound via the sound output module 155 or a headphone of an external electronic device (e.g., an electronic device 102) directly (e.g., wiredly) or wirelessly coupled with the electronic device 101.
The sensor module 176 may detect an operational state (e.g., power or temperature) of the electronic device 101 or an environmental state (e.g., a state of a user) external to the electronic device 101, and then generate an electrical signal or data value corresponding to the detected state. According to an embodiment, the sensor module 176 may include, for example, a gesture sensor, a gyro sensor, an atmospheric pressure sensor, a magnetic sensor, an acceleration sensor, a grip sensor, a proximity sensor, a color sensor, an infrared (IR) sensor, a biometric sensor, a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor, or an illuminance sensor.
The interface 177 may support one or more specified protocols to be used for the electronic device 101 to be coupled with the external electronic device (e.g., the electronic device 102) directly (e.g., wiredly) or wirelessly. According to an embodiment, the interface 177 may include, for example, a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI), a universal serial bus (USB) interface, a secure digital (SD) card interface, or an audio interface.
A connecting terminal 178 may include a connector via which the electronic device 101 may be physically connected with the external electronic device (e.g., the electronic device 102). According to an embodiment, the connecting terminal 178 may include, for example, an HDMI connector, a USB connector, a SD card connector, or an audio connector (e.g., a headphone connector).
The haptic module 179 may convert an electrical signal into a mechanical stimulus (e.g., a vibration or a movement) or electrical stimulus which may be recognized by a user via his tactile sensation or kinesthetic sensation. According to an embodiment, the haptic module 179 may include, for example, a motor, a piezoelectric element, or an electric stimulator.
The camera module 180 may capture a still image or moving images. According to an embodiment, the camera module 180 may include one or more lenses, image sensors, image signal processors, or flashes.
The power management module 188 may manage power supplied to the electronic device 101. According to an embodiment, the power management module 188 may be implemented as at least part of, for example, a power management integrated circuit (PMIC).
The battery 189 may supply power to at least one component of the electronic device 101. According to an embodiment, the battery 189 may include, for example, a primary cell which is not rechargeable, a secondary cell which is rechargeable, or a fuel cell.
The communication module 190 may support establishing a direct (e.g., wired) communication channel or a wireless communication channel between the electronic device 101 and the external electronic device (e.g., the electronic device 102, the electronic device 104, or the server 108) and performing communication via the established communication channel. The communication module 190 may include one or more communication processors that are operable independently from the processor 120 (e.g., the application processor (AP)) and supports a direct (e.g., wired) communication or a wireless communication. According to an embodiment, the communication module 190 may include a wireless communication module 192 (e.g., a cellular communication module, a short-range wireless communication module, or a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) communication module) or a wired communication module 194 (e.g., a local area network (LAN) communication module or a power line communication (PLC) module). A corresponding one of these communication modules may communicate with the external electronic device via the first network 198 (e.g., a short-range communication network, such as Bluetooth™, wireless-fidelity (Wi-Fi) direct, or infrared data association (IrDA)) or the second network 199 (e.g., a long-range communication network, such as a legacy cellular network, a 5G network, a next-generation communication network, the Internet, or a computer network (e.g., LAN or wide area network (WAN)). These various types of communication modules may be implemented as a single component (e.g., a single chip), or may be implemented as multi components (e.g., multi chips) separate from each other. The wireless communication module 192 may identify and authenticate the electronic device 101 in a communication network, such as the first network 198 or the second network 199, using subscriber information (e.g., international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI)) stored in the subscriber identification module 196.
The wireless communication module 192 may support a 5G network, after a 4G network, and next-generation communication technology, e.g., new radio (NR) access technology. The NR access technology may support enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine type communications (mMTC), or ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC). The wireless communication module 192 may support a high-frequency band (e.g., the mmWave band) to achieve, e.g., a high data transmission rate. The wireless communication module 192 may support various technologies for securing performance on a high-frequency band, such as, e.g., beamforming, massive multiple-input and multiple-output (massive MIMO), full dimensional MIMO (FD-MIMO), array antenna, analog beam-forming, or large scale antenna. The wireless communication module 192 may support various requirements specified in the electronic device 101, an external electronic device (e.g., the electronic device 104), or a network system (e.g., the second network 199). According to an embodiment, the wireless communication module 192 may support a peak data rate (e.g., 20 Gbps or more) for implementing eMBB, loss coverage (e.g., 164 dB or less) for implementing mMTC, or U-plane latency (e.g., 0.5 ms or less for each of downlink (DL) and uplink (UL), or a round trip of 1 ms or less) for implementing URLLC.
The antenna module 197 may transmit or receive a signal or power to or from the outside (e.g., the external electronic device) of the electronic device 101. According to an embodiment, the antenna module 197 may include an antenna including a radiating element composed of a conductive material or a conductive pattern formed in or on a substrate (e.g., a printed circuit board (PCB)). According to an embodiment, the antenna module 197 may include a plurality of antennas (e.g., array antennas). In such a case, at least one antenna appropriate for a communication scheme used in the communication network, such as the first network 198 or the second network 199, may be selected, for example, by the communication module 190 (e.g., the wireless communication module 192) from the plurality of antennas. The signal or the power may then be transmitted or received between the communication module 190 and the external electronic device via the selected at least one antenna. According to an embodiment, another component (e.g., a radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC)) other than the radiating element may be additionally formed as part of the antenna module 197.
According to one or more embodiments, the antenna module 197 may form a mmWave antenna module. According to an embodiment, the mmWave antenna module may include a printed circuit board, an RFIC disposed on a first surface (e.g., the bottom surface) of the printed circuit board, or adjacent to the first surface and capable of supporting a designated high-frequency band (e.g., the mmWave band), and a plurality of antennas (e.g., array antennas) disposed on a second surface (e.g., the top or a side surface) of the printed circuit board, or adjacent to the second surface and capable of transmitting or receiving signals of the designated high-frequency band.
At least some of the above-described components may be coupled mutually and communicate signals (e.g., commands or data) therebetween via an inter-peripheral communication scheme (e.g., a bus, general purpose input and output (GPIO), serial peripheral interface (SPI), or mobile industry processor interface (MIPI)).
According to an embodiment, commands or data may be transmitted or received between the electronic device 101 and the external electronic device 104 via the server 108 coupled with the second network 199. Each of the electronic devices 102 or 104 may be a device of a same type as, or a different type, from the electronic device 101. According to an embodiment, all or some of operations to be executed at the electronic device 101 may be executed at one or more of the external electronic devices 102, 104, or 108. For example, if the electronic device 101 performs a function or a service automatically, or based on a request from a user or another device, the electronic device 101, instead of, or in addition to, executing the function or the service, may request the one or more external electronic devices to perform at least part of the function or the service. The one or more external electronic devices receiving the request may perform the at least part of the function or the service requested, or an additional function or an additional service related to the request, and transfer an outcome of the performing to the electronic device 101. The electronic device 101 may provide the outcome, with or without further processing of the outcome, as at least part of a reply to the request. To that end, a cloud computing, distributed computing, mobile edge computing (MEC), or client-server computing technology may be used, for example. The electronic device 101 may provide ultra-low-latency services using, e.g., distributed computing or mobile edge computing. In another embodiment, the external electronic device 104 may include an internet-of-things (IoT) device. The server 108 may be an intelligent server using machine learning and/or a neural network. According to an embodiment, the external electronic device 104 or the server 108 may be included in the second network 199. The electronic device 101 may be applied to intelligent services (e.g., smart home, smart city, smart car, or healthcare) based on 5G communication technology or IoT-related technology.

In an embodiment, the first housing 210 may include a first surface 211, a second surface 212 faced away from the first surface 211, and a first lateral surface 213 covering at least a portion of the first surface 211 and the second surface 212. According to an embodiment, the second surface 212 may further include at least one camera 234 exposed through a portion of the second surface 212. According to an embodiment, the first housing 210 may include a first protection member 214 disposed along a periphery of the first surface 211. According to an embodiment, the first housing 210 may provide a space formed by the first surface 211, the second surface 212, and the first lateral surface 213 as a space for mounting components of the electronic device 101. According to an embodiment, the first lateral surface 213 and a second lateral surface 223 may include a conductive material, a non-conductive material, or a combination thereof. For example, the second lateral surface 223 may include a conductive member 228 and a non-conductive member 229. The conductive member 228 may include a plurality of conductive members and may be spaced apart from each other. The non-conductive member 229 may be disposed between the plurality of conductive members. An antenna structure may be formed by a portion of the plurality of conductive members and a plurality of non-conductive members, or a combination thereof.
According to an embodiment, the second housing 220 may include a third surface 221, a fourth surface 222 faced away from the third surface 221, and the second lateral surface 223 covering at least a portion of the third surface 221 and the fourth surface 222. According to an embodiment, the fourth surface 222 may further include a display panel 235 disposed on the fourth surface 222. A camera 226 may be disposed to face the fourth surface 222 inside the second housing 220 to obtain an external image through the fourth surface 222. The camera 226 may be disposed under the display panel 235 and covered by the display panel 235. According to an embodiment, the camera 226 may be disposed under the display panel 235, and the display panel 235 may include an opening aligned with the camera 226 lens to transmit light from an outside to the camera 226. According to an embodiment, each of the first housing 210 and the second housing 220 may include each of the first protection member 214 and a second protection member 224. The first protection member 214 and the second protection member 224 may be disposed on the first surface 211 and the third surface 221 along a periphery of the flexible display 230. The first protection member 214 and the second protection member 224 may prevent foreign substance (e.g., dust or moisture) from introducing through a gap between the flexible display 230 and the first housing 210 and the second housing 220. The first protection member 214 may be disposed along a periphery of a first display area 231, and the second protection member 224 may be disposed along a periphery of a second display area 232. The first protection member 214 may be formed by being attached to the first lateral surface 213 of the first housing 210, or may be integrally formed with the first lateral surface 213. The second protection member 224 may be formed by being attached to the second lateral surface 223 of the second housing 220, or may be integrally formed with the second lateral surface 223.
According to an embodiment, the second lateral surface 223 may be rotatably (or pivotably) connected to the first lateral surface 213 through a hinge structure 260 mounted on a hinge cover 265. The hinge structure 260 may include a hinge module 262, a first hinge plate 266, and a second hinge plate 267. The first hinge plate 266 may be connected to the first housing 210, and the second hinge plate 267 may be connected to the second housing 220. According to an embodiment, the second housing 220 may provide a space formed by the third surface 221, the fourth surface 222 faced away from the third surface 221, and the lateral surface 223 covering at least a portion of the third surface 221 and the fourth surface 222 as a space for mounting components of the electronic device 101. According to an embodiment, the flexible display 230 may include a window exposed toward the outside. The window may protect a surface of the flexible display 230 and be formed as a protective layer to transmit visual information provided from the flexible display 230 to the outside. The window may include a glass material such as an ultra-thin glass (UTG) or a polymer material such as a polyimide (PI). According to an embodiment, the flexible display 230 may be disposed on the first surface 211 of the first housing 210 and the third surface 221 of the second housing 220 across the hinge cover 265. The flexible display 230 may include the first display area 231 disposed on the first surface 211 of the first housing 210, the second display area 232 disposed on the third surface 221 of the second housing 220, and a third display area 233 between the first display area 231 and the second display area 232. The first display area 231, the second display area 232, and the third display area 233 may form a front surface of the flexible display 230.
According to an embodiment, an opening may be formed in a portion of a screen display area of the flexible display 230, or a recess or an opening may be formed in a support member (e.g., bracket) supporting the flexible display 230. The electronic device 101 may include at least one or more of a sensor module 238 and a camera 236, aligned with the recess or the opening. For example, the first display area 231 may further include the camera 236 capable of obtaining an image from the outside through the portion of the first display area 231 and the sensor module 238 generating an electrical signal or a data value corresponding to an external environmental condition. According to an embodiment, at least one or more of the sensor module 238 and the camera 236 may be included on a rear surface of the flexible display 230 corresponding to the first display area 231 or the second display area 232 of the flexible display 230. For example, at least one of the camera 236 and the sensor module 238 may be disposed under the flexible display 230 and covered by the flexible display 230. At least one of the camera 236 and the sensor module 238 may not be exposed to the outside by being covered by the flexible display 230. However, it is not limited thereto, and the flexible display 230 may include an opening exposing the camera 236 and the sensor module 238 to the outside. According to an embodiment, the flexible display 230 may further include a rear surface opposite to the front surface. According to an embodiment, the flexible display 230 may be supported by a first support member 270 of the first housing 210 and a second support member 280 of the second housing 220.
According to an embodiment, the hinge structure 260 may be configured to rotatably coupled the first support member 270 that forms the first housing 210 and is fastened to the first hinge plate 266, and the second support member 280 that forms the second housing 220 and is fastened to the second hinge plate 267.
According to an embodiment, the hinge cover 265 covering the hinge structure 260 may be at least partially exposed through a space between the first housing 210 and the second housing 220 while the electronic device 101 is in a folding state. In another embodiment, the hinge cover 265 may be covered by the first housing 210 and the second housing 220 while the electronic device 101 is in an unfolding state.
According to an embodiment, the electronic device 101 may be folded with respect to (along) a folding axis 237 passing through the hinge cover 265. For example, the hinge cover 265 may be disposed between the first housing 210 and the second housing 220 of the electronic device 101 so that the electronic device 101 may be bent, curved, or folded. For example, the first housing 210 may be coupled to the second housing 220 through the hinge structure 260 mounted on the hinge cover 265 and may rotate with respect to the folding axis 237. For example, the hinge structure 260 may include the hinge modules 262 disposed at both ends of the first hinge plate 266 and the second hinge plate 267. Since the hinge module 262 includes hinge gears engaged with each other therein, the hinge module 262 may rotate the first hinge plate 266 and the second hinge plate 267 with respect to the folding axis. The first housing 210 coupled to the first hinge plate 266 may be connected to the second housing 220 coupled to the second hinge plate 267, and may rotate with respect to the folding axis by the hinge modules 262.
According to an embodiment, the electronic device 101 may be folded so that the first housing 210 and the second housing 220 may face each other by rotating with respect to the folding axis 237. According to an embodiment, the electronic device 101 may be folded so that the first housing 210 and the second housing 220 are stacked or overlapped with each other.

According to an embodiment, the electronic device 101 may provide the unfolding state in which the first housing 210 and the second housing 220 are fully folded out by the hinge structure 260. The first support member 270 may switch the electronic device 101 into the folding state or the unfolding state by being connected to the second support member 280 through the hinge structure 260. By rotation of a hinge gear 263, the first support member 270 and the second support member 280 attached to the hinge plates 266 and 267 of the hinge structure 260 may operate. The hinge plates 266 and 267 may include the first hinge plate 266 coupled to the first support member 270 and the second hinge plate 267 coupled to the second support member 280. By the rotation of the hinge gear 263, the electronic device 101 may be switched into the folding state or the unfolding state.
The hinge structure 260 may include the hinge module 262, the first hinge plate 266, and the second hinge plate 267. The hinge module 262 may include the hinge gear 263 that makes the first hinge plate 266 and the second hinge plate 267 pivotable. The hinge gear 263 may rotate the first hinge plate 266 and the second hinge plate 267 while engaging with each other and rotating. The hinge module 262 may be a plurality of hinge modules. Each of the plurality of hinge modules may be disposed at both ends formed by the first hinge plate 266 and the second hinge plate 267.
The first hinge plate 266 may be coupled to the first support member 270 of the first housing 210, and the second hinge plate 267 may be coupled to the second support member 280 of the second housing 220. The first housing 210 and the second housing 220 may rotate to correspond to the rotation of the first hinge plate 266 and the second hinge plate 267.
The first housing 210 may include the first support member 270, and the second support member 280. The first support member 270 may be partially covered by the first lateral surface 213, and the second support member 280 may be partially covered by the second lateral surface 223. The first support member 270 may be integrally formed with the first lateral surface 213, and the second support member 280 may be integrally formed with the second lateral surface 223. According to an embodiment, the first support member 270 may be formed separately from the first lateral surface 213, and the second support member 280 may be formed separately from the second lateral surface 223. The first lateral surface 213 and the second lateral surface 223 may be formed by a metal material, a non-metal material, or a combination thereof, and may be used as an antenna.
The first support member 270 may be coupled to the flexible display 230 on a surface, and may be coupled to the rear plate 290 on another surface. The second support member 280 may be coupled to the flexible display 230 on a surface, and may be coupled to the display panel 235 on another surface.
The printed circuit board 250 and the battery 255 may be disposed between a surface formed by the first support member 270 and the second support member 280 and a surface formed by the display panel 235 and the rear plate 290. The printed circuit board 250 may be separated in order to be disposed on each of the first support member 270 of the first housing 210 and the second support member 280 of the second housing 220. A shape of a first printed circuit board 251 disposed in the first support member 270 and a shape of a second printed circuit board 252 disposed in the second support member 280 may be different from each other according to a space of an inside of the electronic device. Components for implementing various functions of the electronic device 101 may be mounted on the first printed circuit board 251 and the second printed circuit board 252. According to an embodiment, the components for implementing an overall function of the electronic device 101 may be mounted on the first printed circuit board 251, and on the second printed circuit board 252, electronic components for implementing a portion of functions of the first printed circuit board 251 may be disposed or components for driving the display panel 235 disposed on the fourth surface 222 may be disposed. The first printed circuit board 251 and the second printed circuit board 252 may be electrically connected by a flexible printed circuit board 240.
For example, the battery 255, which is a device for supplying power to at least one component of the electronic device 101, may include a non-rechargeable primary battery, or a rechargeable secondary battery, or a fuel cell. At least a portion of the battery 255 may be disposed on substantially the same plane as the printed circuit board 250. The surface of the printed circuit board 250 and the battery 255 formed as substantially the same plane may be disposed on a surface (e.g., a surface facing the second surface 212 and the fourth surface 222 or a surface facing the display panel 235 and the rear plate 290) of the first support member 270 and the second support member 280. For example, the flexible display 230 may be disposed on the first surface 211 and the third surface 221, and the printed circuit board 250 and the battery 255 may be disposed on the second surface 212 and the fourth surface 222 facing the surface on which the flexible display 230 is disposed.
In an embodiment, the antenna 285 may be disposed between the rear plate 290 and the battery 255. The antenna 285 may include, for example, a near field communication (NFC) antenna, a wireless charging antenna, and/or a magnetic secure transmission (MST) antenna. For example, the antenna 285 may perform short-range communication with an external device, or wirelessly transmit and receive the power required for charging.

For example, the first FPCB 310 and/or the second FPCB 320 may be an electromagnetic induction panel. The first FPCB 310 and/or the second FPCB 320 may receive the input signal through an electromagnetic interaction with the electronic pen. The first FPCB 310 and/or the second FPCB 320 may form an electromagnetic field based on a current applied to an internal conductive pattern. The electronic pen may form an electromagnetic field different from the electromagnetic field based on the current induced to a coil inside the electronic pen from the electromagnetic field. The first FPCB 310 and/or the second FPCB 320 may recognize the electromagnetic field formed from the electronic pen. The electronic device 101 may receive an input inputted into the display area 231, 232, and 233 based on recognizing the electromagnetic field formed from the electronic pen through the first FPCB 310 and/or the second FPCB 320. The input may be obtained based on the contact of the electronic pen in the display area 231, 232, and 233 or being positioned in a preset distance from the display area 231, 232, and 233.

According to an embodiment, the window 492 may be disposed on a surface of the display panel 401 facing an outside of an electronic device 101. The window 492 may protect the display panel 401 and transmit light emitted from the display panel 401 to the outside. The window 492 may provide visual information based on transmission of the light. The display 230 may further include adhesive layers 403, 404, and 405 disposed between the first layer 491, the window 492, the second layer 493, and the display panel 401. According to an embodiment, the first layer 491, the window 492, and the second layer 493 may at least partially include a transparent portion. For example, the first layer 491, the window 492, and the second layer 493 may include the transparent portion to transmit light emitted from the display panel 401 to the outside. The first layer 491, the window 492, and/or the second layer 493 may include a polymer material or a glass material. For example, by being formed of the glass material, the window 492 may secure an overall rigidity of the layers disposed on a surface of the display panel 401 facing the outside of the electronic device 101. The window 492 may include an ultra-thin glass (UTG) formed of a thin film glass material. For another example, the window 492 may include the polymer material such as polyimide (PI).
The first layer 491 and/or the second layer 493 may include the thin film formed of the polyimide (PI) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). According to an embodiment, the first layer 491 may be a layer for protecting the window 492. The first layer 491 may be referred to as a protective film. The first layer 491 may include the polymer material such as the PET. The adhesive layer 403 disposed between the first layer 491 and the window 492 may have lower viscosity or a thinner thickness than other adhesive layers 404 and 405. When it is necessary to replace or remove the first layer 491, in order to remove the first layer 491, the adhesive layer 403 disposed between the first layer 491 and the window 492 may be configured to have lower adhesive force than other adhesive layers 404 and 405.
The second layer 493 may be configured to protect the display panel 401. The second layer 493 may include a protective layer or a polarizing layer made of the polymer material such as the PET. In case that a polarizing plate is not included in the display panel 401, the second layer 493 may reinforce the rigidity of the display panel 401.
In an embodiment, the display 230 may further include a coating layer disposed on the first layer 491. The coating layer may have a material having the higher rigidity than the rigidity of the first layer 491 and the second layer 493, and may have scratch-resistance characteristics. The coating layer was described as being disposed on the first layer 491, but may be disposed at various positions. According to an embodiment, the coating layer may include an anti-reflection (AR) coating, a low reflection (LR) coating, a shatter proof (SP) coating, an anti-fingerprint (AF) coating, and the like.
According to an embodiment, the adhesive layers 403, 404, and 405 may be the transparent adhesive layers capable of transmitting light. For example, the adhesive layers 403, 404, and 405 may include a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) or an optical clear adhesive (OCA).
According to an embodiment, the display 230 may further include the protective layer 480 disposed on another surface of the display panel 401. According to an embodiment, the protective layer 480 may be disposed on another surface of the display panel 401. For example, the window 492 may be disposed on a surface of the display panel 401, and the protective layer 480 may be disposed on another surface facing the surface of the display panel 401. The protective layer 480 may be a film for protecting the display panel 401. The protective layer 480 may be formed of the polymer material such as the PET. For example, the first rigid area 331 may support the first display area 231, and the second rigid area 332 may support the second display area 232. The flexible area 333 may support the third display area 233. The flexible area 333 may include slits 334 parallel to a folding axis f for deformation of the third display area 233. According to an embodiment, the support plate 330 may be attached to the protective layer 480 through adhesive members 481 and 482.
According to an embodiment, the support plate 330 may be in contact with the first FPCB 310 and the second FPCB 320. The first FPCB 310 may be attached to the first rigid area 331 of the support plate 330, and the second FPCB 320 may be attached to the second rigid area 332 of the support plate 330. In the third display area 233, the first FPCB 310 may be disposed under a portion of the flexible area 333, and the second FPCB 320 may be disposed under a remaining portion of the flexible area 333. The electronic device 101 may include an elastic layer 473 between the first FPCB 310 and the portion of the flexible area 333 of the support plate 330 and between the second FPCB 320 and the remaining portion of the flexible area 333 of the support plate 330. According to an embodiment, the electronic device 101 may further include functional layers 410 and 420 under the first FPCB 310 and the second FPCB 320. The functional layers 410 and 420 may include a magnetic material or a metal layer for shielding. For example, in the second area 320a, the second FPCB 320 may include the other surface 520c facing the inside of the electronic device and a recessed surface 520d recessed from the other surface 520c. The second FPCB 320 may include a stepped portion 504 between the other surface 520c and the recessed surface 520d.
According to an embodiment, the first FPCB 310 may include a first non-conductive layer 531, a second non-conductive layer 532, and a third non-conductive layer 533. The first non-conductive layer 531 may be in contact with a surface of the support plate 330. The second non-conductive layer 532 may include a first conductive pattern 511 and a second conductive pattern 512. The second non-conductive layer 532 may include at least one of epoxy or glass fiber. The second non-conductive layer 532 may be referred to as a base in terms that the conductive patterns 511 and 512 are printed on the surface. The second non-conductive layer 532 may include the first conductive pattern 511 disposed in a surface facing the first non-conductive layer 531, and the second conductive pattern 512 disposed in another surface distinct from the surface. The second non-conductive layer 532 may be in contact with the first non-conductive layer 531. The second non-conductive layer 532 may be attached to the first non-conductive layer 531 through a first adhesive layer 521.
According to an embodiment, the second conductive pattern 512 may be disposed on a surface of the second non-conductive layer 532 facing the third non-conductive layer 533. The third non-conductive layer 533 may be in contact with the other surface of the second non-conductive layer 532. The third non-conductive layer 533 may be in contact with the second non-conductive layer 532 through a second adhesive layer 522.
According to an embodiment, the second FPCB 320 may include the first non-conductive layer 531, the second non-conductive layer 532, and the third non-conductive layer 533, as a similar structure to that of the first FPCB 310.
According to an embodiment, the first FPCB 310 or the second FPCB 320 may include the first conductive pattern 511 among the first conductive pattern 511 and the second conductive pattern 512 in the first area 310a or the second area 320a. The first FPCB 310 or the second FPCB 320 may include the first non-conductive layer 531 among the first non-conductive layer 531 and the third non-conductive layer 533 in the first area 310a or the second area 320a.
The third non-conductive layer 533 may be disposed on a remaining area distinct from the first area 310a or the second area 320a. For example, the third non-conductive layer 533 may face the other surface 510c of the first FPCB 310 or the other surface 520c of the second FPCB 320. The third non-conductive layer 533 may be cut and removed from the first area 310a or the second area 320a. The second conductive pattern 512 may be disposed in the remaining area distinct from the first area 310a or the second area 320a. For example, the second conductive pattern 512 may be disposed on the other surface 510c of the first FPCB 310 or the other surface 520c of the second FPCB 320. The second conductive pattern 512 may be disposed on the surface of the second non-conductive layer 532 facing the third non-conductive layer 533. The second conductive pattern 512 may be cut and removed from the first area 310a. The second adhesive layer 522 may include an inclined surface 522a extending from a boundary of the third non-conductive layer 533 toward a folding axis 237. The functional layer 410 may include a magnetic layer 411 and a shielding layer 421. The magnetic layer 411 may be disposed along the surface of the third non-conductive layer 533 and the second adhesive layer 522. The shielding layer 412 may be disposed along the magnetic layer 411. The shielding layer 412 may include an inclined surface 410a corresponding to the inclined surface 522a of the second adhesive layer 522. The first non-conductive layer 531, the second non-conductive layer 532, the third non-conductive layer 533, the first conductive pattern 511, and the second conductive pattern 512 described above are described based on the first FPCB 310, but the second FPCB 320 may also have the same or similar configuration.
According to the above-described embodiment, the first FPCB 310 and the second FPCB 320 may include a structure that separates the support plate 330 from the first FPCB 310 and the second FPCB 320 in order to reduce force applied per unit extent of the flexible display 230 in case that the flexible display 230 is deformed. The first FPCB 310 and the second FPCB 320 may form the additional recessed surface 510d and the stepped portion 503 by removing the functional layer 410. The first FPCB 310 and the second FPCB 320 may secure a gap in a direction (e.g., a direction facing the hinge structure) facing the inside of the electronic device 101 by removing a portion of the surface facing the inside of the electronic device 101. When the flexible display 230 sags, damage may be reduced by preventing contact with external structures through the gap.
According to the above-described embodiment, the first FPCB 310 and the second FPCB 320 may form the additional recessed surface 510d and the stepped portion 503 by removing the second conductive pattern 512 and the third non-conductive layer 533. The first FPCB 310 and the second FPCB 320 may secure the gap in the direction (e.g., the direction facing the hinge structure) facing the inside of the electronic device 101 by removing the portion of the surface facing the inside of the electronic device 101. When the flexible display 230 sags, damage may be reduced by preventing contact with the external structures through the gap.
