Certain embodiments relate to an electronic device having a structure such that an active area on a display thereof, in which visual information is to be display, can be changed.
An electronic device can have an expandable display. For example, when the display is expanded, an active area on the display, in which visual information is to be displayed, may be expanded from a partial area of the display to the entire area of the display. The electronic device can have an active display area of one size when the display is not expanded. When the display is expanded, an additional display area is added, thus resulting in a larger display area.
An electronic device may change the configuration of the screen to be displayed (visual information) as the size of the active area of the display is expanded or reduced.
The screen can be configured to be displayed within an active area of the display. When the size of the active area is changed, the content and objects of the screen are changed to accommodate the changed size. However, this screen change may unexpectedly cause a displeasing user experience.

With regard to the description of the drawings, similar reference numerals may be used to refer to similar or related elements. It is to be understood that a singular form of a noun corresponding to an item may include one or more of the things, unless the relevant context clearly indicates otherwise. As used herein, each of such phrases as “A or B,” “at least one of A and B,” “at least one of A or B,” “A, B, or C,” “at least one of A, B, and C,” and “at least one of A, B, or C,” may include any one of, or all possible combinations of the items enumerated together in a corresponding one of the phrases. As used herein, such terms as “1st” and “2nd,” or “first” and “second” may be used to simply distinguish a corresponding component from another, and does not limit the components in other aspect (e.g., importance or order). It is to be understood that if an element (e.g., a first element) is referred to, with or without the term “operatively” or “communicatively”, as “coupled with,” “coupled to,” “connected with,” or “connected to” another element (e.g., a second element), it means that the element may be coupled with the other element directly (e.g., wiredly), wirelessly, or via a third element.
As used in connection with certain embodiments of the disclosure, the term “module” may include a unit implemented in hardware, software, or firmware, and may interchangeably be used with other terms, for example, “logic,” “logic block,” “part,” or “circuitry”. A module may be a single integral component, or a minimum unit or part thereof, adapted to perform one or more functions. For example, according to an embodiment, the module may be implemented in a form of an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC).
Certain embodiments as set forth herein may be implemented as software (e.g., the program 140) including one or more instructions that are stored in a storage medium (e.g., internal memory 136 or external memory 138) that is readable by a machine (e.g., the electronic device 101). For example, a processor (e.g., the processor 120) of the machine (e.g., the electronic device 101) may invoke at least one of the one or more instructions stored in the storage medium, and execute it, with or without using one or more other components under the control of the processor. This allows the machine to be operated to perform at least one function according to the at least one instruction invoked. The one or more instructions may include a code generated by a complier or a code executable by an interpreter. The machine-readable storage medium may be provided in the form of a non-transitory storage medium. Wherein, the term “non-transitory” simply means that the storage medium is a tangible device, and does not include a signal (e.g., an electromagnetic wave), but this term does not differentiate between where data is semi-permanently stored in the storage medium and where the data is temporarily stored in the storage medium.
According to an embodiment, a method according to certain embodiments of the disclosure may be included and provided in a computer program product. The computer program product may be traded as a product between a seller and a buyer. The computer program product may be distributed in the form of a machine-readable storage medium (e.g., compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM)), or be distributed (e.g., downloaded or uploaded) online via an application store (e.g., PlayStore™), or between two user devices (e.g., smart phones) directly. If distributed online, at least part of the computer program product may be temporarily generated or at least temporarily stored in the machine-readable storage medium, such as memory of the manufacturer's server, a server of the application store, or a relay server.
According to certain embodiments, each component (e.g., a module or a program) of the above-described components may include a single entity or multiple entities, and some of the multiple entities may be separately disposed in different components. According to certain embodiments, one or more of the above-described components may be omitted, or one or more other components may be added. Alternatively or additionally, a plurality of components (e.g., modules or programs) may be integrated into a single component. In such a case, according to certain embodiments, the integrated component may still perform one or more functions of each of the plurality of components in the same or similar manner as they are performed by a corresponding one of the plurality of components before the integration. According to certain embodiments, operations performed by the module, the program, or another component may be carried out sequentially, in parallel, repeatedly, or heuristically, or one or more of the operations may be executed in a different order or omitted, or one or more other operations may be added.
The electronic device 101 may display a screen on an active area of the display module 160. when the size of the active area is changed, contents of the screen may be reconfigured accordingly. The reconfiguration can be confusing to the user when performed unexpectedly.
Various housing structures may be applied to an electronic device 101. For example, the electronic device 101 may include a foldable housing which is divided into two housings with respect to a folding axis. A first display area of a display (e.g., a flexible display) may be disposed in a first housing, and a second display area of the display may be disposed in a second housing. The foldable housing may be implemented in an in-folding manner in which the first display area and the second display area face each other when a portable electronic device is in a folded state. Alternatively, the foldable housing may be implemented in an out-folding manner in which a first part and a second part face in the opposite direction when the portable electronic device is in the folded state. For another example, the electronic device 101 may include a slidable (or rollable) housing that allows at least a portion of the flexible display to be wound around or unwound from a roller unit (or a rotating assembly) disposed in an inner space of the electronic device 101. Hereinafter, a surface on which the display is disposed (e.g., a surface on which a display area is visually exposed) is defined as a front surface of the electronic device. In addition, the opposite surface of the front surface is defined as a rear surface of the electronic device. In addition, a surface surrounding the space between the front surface and the rear surface is defined as a lateral surface of the electronic device. The term “state” may refer to a structural form, contour, or shape of the electronic device (or the display).
The second housing 220 may be coupled to the first housing 210 to be slidable. The roller unit may be disposed in an inner space of the second housing 220. The display 230 may include a first display area 231 disposed adjacent to the first housing 210, and a second display area 232 disposed in the inner space while surrounding the roller unit. When the second housing 220 slides toward the first housing 210, the second display area 232 may move to the inside of the second housing 220 and be wound around the roller unit. When the second housing 220 slides in a direction away from the first housing 210 (e.g., a −y-axis direction as shown in
According to an embodiment, a state of the electronic device 200 may be defined based on a rotation angle of the roller unit (e.g., an angle at which the roller unit rotates in a direction (e.g., clockwise) in which the display 230 is unwound from the roller unit). For example, when the rotation angle of the roller unit exceeds a first threshold value, the state of the electronic device 200 may be defined as a first state (or, normal state or slide-in state) in which only the first display area 231 of the display 230 is exposed (or the second display area 232 is disposed in the inner space). When the rotation angle of the roller unit exceeds a second threshold value which is larger than the first threshold value, the state of the electronic device 200 may be defined as a second state (or, extended state or slide-out state) in which an entire area (e.g., the first display area 231 and the second display area 232) of the display 230 is exposed. The state in which the second display area 232 is partially exposed from the roller unit (or partially wound around the roller unit) may be defined as a third state (or intermediate state) in this document.
According to another embodiment, the state of the electronic device 200 may be defined based on a curvature (degree of bending) of a designated part in the display 230. For example, when a curvature of the second display area 232 corresponds to a value (or within a range) indicating concavity (or convexity), the state of the electronic device 200 may be defined as the first state. When the curvature of the second display area 232 corresponds to a value (or within a range) indicating flatness, the state of the electronic device 200 may be defined as the second state.
Based on the state of the electronic device 200, an active area in which visual information (e.g., an application execution screen) is to be displayed on the display 230 may be determined. For example, when the electronic device 200 is in the first state, the active area may be determined as the first display area 231, and thus the visual information may be displayed in the first display area 231. When the electronic device 200 is in the second state, the active area may be determined as the entire area (e.g., the first display area 231 and the second display area 232) of the display 230, and thus the visual information may be displayed in the entire area.
The display 410 may include a first display area 411 and a second display area 412. As previously described with reference to
The state detection sensor 420 (e.g., the sensor module 176 of
The memory 430 may store visual information to be displayed in the active area. For example, the visual information may include a background element and a user interface (UI) element (or a user experience (UX) element and a foreground element). The UI element is a graphic element which allows the electronic device 400 to interact with a user, and may include, for example, a video, image, text, thumbnail, emoticon, icon, keypad, button, or menu. The processor 499 may execute a function operatively connected to the UI element, in response to a user's touch input on the UI element. The background element is a graphic element which is not related to the interaction between the electronic device 400 and a user and is not connected to a specific function, and may include, for example, a background image or text.
The visual information may be classified into first visual information to be displayed when the electronic device 400 is in the first state and second visual information to be displayed when the electronic device 400 is in the second state. The first visual information may be different from the second visual information in an amount, attribute, layout, or configuration of information to be displayed to a user. For example, the second visual information may have a content amount (e.g., text amount, number of images, or number of pages) greater than that of the first visual information. The attribute may include size, color, or brightness. For example, when the electronic device is changed from the first state to the second state, the size of a background element and/or a foreground element may be enlarged, and when the electronic device is switched vice versa, the size of the corresponding element may be reduced. As the state is changed, a layout of an UI element may be changed. For example, as the electronic device is changed from the first state to the second state, for example, a position of the UI element may be changed from the first display area to the second display area. The second visual information may have a UI element different from the UI element configured in the first visual information. For example, when the electronic device is changed from the first state to the second state, a new UI element not included in the first visual information may be included in the second visual information to be displayed in the active area. For another example, when the electronic device is changed from the first state to the second state, a second UI element may be displayed in the active area instead of a first UI element.
The memory 430 may store configuration information used to configure visual information to be displayed in the active area. For example, the configuration information may include first configuration information for configuring visual information when the electronic device 400 is in the first state, and second configuration information for configuring visual information when the electronic device is in the second state. For example, when the electronic device 400 is in the first state, the processor 499 may configure visual information to be displayed in the active area as the first visual information by using the first configuration information. When the electronic device 400 is in the second state, the processor 499 may configure the visual information as the second visual information by using the second configuration information.
The memory 430 may store instructions which cause the processor 499 to perform an operation of notifying a user that visual information is also changed when the state of the electronic device 400 is changed.
According to an embodiment, the instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform an operation of determining the first display area as the active area when the electronic device 400 is in the first state and, accordingly, displaying the first visual information and a first preview in the active area, or an operation of determining the entire area of the display 410 as the active area when the electronic device 400 is in the second state and, accordingly, displaying the second visual information and a second preview in the active area. When the electronic device 400 is changed from the first state to the second state, the first preview may be a graphic element which allows a user to recognize that the second visual information is displayed on the display 410 instead of the first visual information. When the electronic device 400 is changed from the second state to the first state, the second preview may be a graphic element which allows a user to recognize that the first visual information is displayed on the display 410 instead of the second visual information. For example, a preview may be a thumbnail image which is a reduction of the corresponding visual information. For another example, the preview may include an icon in which an element (e.g., amount, attribute, layout, or configuration of information) indicating the difference between the two pieces of visual information is shaped. For another example, the preview may include text indicating the difference between the two pieces of visual information.
According to an embodiment, the instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform the operations of determining whether visual information, as an execution screen of an application to be displayed on the display 410, exists for each state of the electronic device 400, based on a file (e.g., a manifest file) used to execute the application, displaying, on the display 410, a preview corresponding to a state different from the visual information corresponding to a current state of the electronic device 400 when it is determined that the visual information exists for each state, and displaying the visual information on the display 410 without the preview when it is determined that the visual information does not exist for each state.
According to an embodiment, the instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform an operation of ending the display of the preview when a specified time has elapsed from the time when the display of the preview is started.
According to an embodiment, the portable electronic device 400 may further include a haptic module 179. The instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform an operation of notifying a user in advance that visual information may be changed according to a state change of the electronic device 400 by using the haptic module 179 as a tactile means other than a visual reminder using the display 410.
According to an embodiment, the portable electronic device 400 may further include a sound output module 155. The instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform an operation of notifying a user in advance that visual information may be changed according to a state change of the electronic device 400 by using the sound output module 155 as an auditory means.
According to one embodiment, the instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform the reminder by using a combination of two or more of visual, auditory, and tactile means.
According to an embodiment, the instructions may cause the processor 499 to: change the intensity, number of times, or rhythm of vibration of the tactile means according to the type of reminder. For example, Table 1 as a table related to a tactile reminder is stored in the memory 430, and the processor 499 may adjust the intensity and number of times of vibration of the tactile means with reference to Table 1.
According to an embodiment, the instructions may cause the processor 499 to: change sound volume, the number of times the sound is output, or a sound type of the auditory means according to the type of reminder. For example, Table 2 as a table related to an auditory reminder is stored in the memory 430, and the processor 499 may adjust the intensity, the number of times of output, and the type of sound with reference to Table 2.
The portable electronic device 400 may further include a state change module 440. The state change module 440 may include a motor which rotates the roller unit. The state change module 440 may rotate the roller unit according to the control of the processor 499 to change a state of the electronic device 400 from the first state to the second state or vice versa. The instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform the operations of displaying, on the display 410, a handler for a state change of the electronic device 400 as a type of UI element, in response to a user input, receiving a touch input on the handler from the display 410, driving the state change module 440, based on the touch input, so as to change the state of the electronic device 400 from the first state to the second state or vice versa, and ending the display of the handler after the state change (or when the user input that has triggered the state change is released).
According to an embodiment, the instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform the operations of receiving a touch input from the display 410, recognizing that the received touch input is a user input (e.g., a long press or a force touch) designated for recalling a handler, and displaying the handler on the display 410 in response to the recognition.
According to an embodiment, the instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform the operations of recognizing a user input for recalling a handler from data received from the sensor module 176 (e.g., a grip sensor) or the input module 150 (e.g., a physical button placed on a lateral surface of the electronic device 400), and displaying the handler on the display 410 in response to the recognition.
According to an embodiment, the instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform an operation of configuring a handler as the top layer among graphic elements. For example, when display positions of an execution screen and the handler overlap, the handler may be positioned on the execution screen. While an UI element in the execution screen is positioned under the handler, the processor 499 may be configured so as not to respond to a touch input on the UI element.
According to an embodiment, the instructions may cause the processor 499 to: perform an operation of adjusting the transparency of a handler such that a user can identify an UI element positioned under the handler.
The processor 499 (e.g., the processor 120 of
The processor 499 may recognize a state of the electronic device 400 by using data received from the state detection sensor 420, and determine an active area in which visual information is to be displayed, based on the recognized state of the electronic device 400. For example, the processor 499 may determine the first display area 411 as the active area, based on recognition that the electronic device 400 is in the first state. The processor 499 may determine the entire area (e.g., the first display area 411 and second display area 412) of the display 410 as the active area, based on recognition that the electronic device 400 is in the second state. When it is recognized that the electronic device 400 is in the third state, the processor 499 may determine an exposed part in the second display area 412, based on a rotation angle of the roller unit, and determine the exposed part together with the first display area 411 as the active area.
The processor 499 may be configured to perform operations defined by the instructions stored in the memory 430. The operations of the processor 499 are described in detail below. Further, additional operations of the processor 499 are described below.
