Abstract

In dictionary retrieval processing by the electronic dictionary, if a headword matching a retrieval object word is not stored in a built-in dictionary data, the retrieval object word is registered in the form of a network-dictionary retrieval object listing. If a network dictionary retrieval is performed through connection to the dictionary server, a dictionary storing the registered retrieval word is retrieved in the dictionary server, is transmitted to the electronic dictionary, and is displayed. When the displayed dictionary in the network dictionary retrieval is selected, dictionary data is retrieved from the target of the selected dictionary, the dictionary contents corresponding to the retrieval word retrieved in the dictionary server is transmitted to the user electronic dictionary and is displayed. When update of a dictionary is instructed, data of the dictionary is transmitted and downloaded into the dictionary server, and built-in dictionary data is thereby updated and stored.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0004] The present invention relates to an electronic dictionary terminal, electronic dictionary server, and recording medium that update dictionary contents in the electronic dictionary terminal.

[0005] 2. Description of the Related Art

[0006] Conventionally, various book-type dictionaries have generally been used, including English-Japanese dictionaries, Japanese-English dictionaries, and Japanese dictionaries, for example. In recent years, however, electronic dictionaries are widely used because of, for example, their portability, and word retrievability.

[0007] Electronic dictionaries can be categorized into various types, most of which have specifications unique to one another depending on, for example, the contents and the volume of built-in dictionaries, the size of an apparatus housing, and the size of display screen. These dictionaries are sold as models independent of each other.

[0008] To purchase an electronic dictionary, a user confirms specifications of individual models of such electronic dictionaries at stores, through catalogs, and/or in other ways to find a model suitable to the user's demand.

[0009] As such, the contents of such conventional electronic dictionaries are fixed in units of the model. For example, suppose a user purchased a student-dedicated model containing, for example, an “archaic word dictionary” in school days of the user; and having grown to an adult, the user needs to purchase a high-level dictionary, such as an “English-English dictionary.” In this case, the user has to purchase a new higher-order model. This is a problem of making it extremely wasteful.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0010] The present invention is directed to an electronic dictionary terminal, electronic dictionary server, recording medium storing an electronic-dictionary-terminal processing program, and recording medium storing an electronic-dictionary-server processing program that enable dictionary retrievability to be enhanced without requiring a different model to be purchased.

[0011] According to an embodiment of the present invention, an electronic dictionary terminal connected via a communication network to a dictionary server comprising a first storage device which stores headwords and description contents of the headwords, the electronic dictionary terminal comprises:

[0012] a second storage device which stores headwords and description contents of the headwords;

[0013] an input unit which inputs a retrieval object word;

[0014] a determining unit which determines whether a headword corresponding to the retrieval object word is stored in the second storage device;

[0015] a display device which displays the description contents of the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word and stored in the second storage device when the determining unit determines that the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word is stored in the second storage device;

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

A portable device connected via a communication network to a dictionary server comprising a net dictionary storage unit which stores headwords and description contents of the headwords as dictionary data in association with each other, respectively, the portable device comprising: a dictionary storage unit which stores headwords and description contents of the headwords as dictionary data in association with each other, respectively; an input unit which inputs a retrieval object word; a net dictionary retrieval requesting unit which determines whether a headword corresponding to the retrieval object word input by the input unit is stored in the dictionary storage unit or not, the net dictionary retrieval requesting unit causing the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word and the description contents of the headword, which are stored in association with each other in the dictionary storage unit, to be displayed, when determining that the headword is stored in the dictionary storage unit, the net dictionary retrieval requesting unit transmitting the retrieval object word to the dictionary server and making a retrieval request to the dictionary server to retrieve a headword corresponding to the retrieval object word, when determining that the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word is not stored in the dictionary storage device; and a net dictionary retrieval information receiving unit which receives retrieval information regarding the headword in dictionary data comprising the retrieved headword corresponding to the retrieval object word from the dictionary server, after the retrieval request is made to the dictionary server by the net dictionary retrieval information receiving unit; a net dictionary retrieval information display controlling unit which performs control to cause the retrieval information received by the net dictionary retrieval information receiving unit to be displayed; a reception instruction unit which gives an instruction for instructing the portable device to receive new dictionary data from the dictionary server in response to a user's operation, after the retrieval information is caused by the net dictionary retrieval information display controlling unit to be displayed; and a dictionary data receiving unit which receives from the dictionary server the dictionary data comprising the retrieved headword corresponding to the retrieval object word in response to the instruction from the reception instruction unit.

The portable device according to claim 1, wherein: the dictionary server stores items of dictionary data each comprising the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word; the net dictionary retrieval information receiving unit includes a plurality of net dictionary retrieval information receiving units which respectively receive items of retrieval information regarding the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word in the items of dictionary data; the net dictionary retrieval information display controlling unit performs control to cause the items of retrieval information received by the net dictionary retrieval information receiving units to be displayed; the reception instruction unit includes a specified dictionary reception instruction unit which specifies any one of the items of the dictionary data and makes an instruction for instructing the portable device to receive the specified dictionary data, after the items of retrieval information are caused by the net dictionary retrieval information display controlling unit to be displayed; and the dictionary data receiving unit includes a specified dictionary data receiving unit which receives dictionary data, which is specified, and contains the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word, in response to the instruction from the specified dictionary reception instruction unit.

A portable device connected via a communication network to a dictionary server comprising a net dictionary storage unit which stores headwords and description contents of the headwords as dictionary data in association with each other, respectively, the portable device comprising: a dictionary storage unit which stores headwords and description contents of the headwords as dictionary data in association with each other, respectively; an input unit which inputs a retrieval object word; a net dictionary retrieval requesting unit which determines whether a headword corresponding to the retrieval object word input by the input unit is stored in the dictionary storage unit or not, the net dictionary retrieval requesting unit causing the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word and the description contents of the headword, which are stored in association with each other in the dictionary storage unit, to be displayed, when determining that the headword is stored in the dictionary storage unit, the net dictionary retrieval requesting unit transmitting the retrieval object word to the dictionary server and making a retrieval request to the dictionary server to retrieve a headword corresponding to the retrieval object word, when determining that the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word is not stored in the dictionary storage device; and a plurality of net dictionary retrieval information receiving units which respectively receive, from the dictionary server, items of retrieval information regarding the headword in items of dictionary data comprising the retrieved headword corresponding to the retrieval object word, after the retrieval request is made to the dictionary server by the net dictionary retrieval information receiving unit; and a plurality of net dictionary retrieval information display controlling units which perform control to cause the items of retrieval information received by the net dictionary retrieval information receiving units to be displayed.

5. The portable device according to claim 1, the retrieval information regarding the headword indicates the number of characters used in the description contents of the headword.

The portable device according to claim 1, further comprising: a candidate headword display controlling unit which performs control to cause headwords similar to the retrieval object word input by the input unit to be read and displayed, when it is determined that the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word is not stored in the dictionary storage unit; a candidate headword specifying unit which specifies a candidate headword included in the candidate headwords caused to be displayed by the candidate headword display controlling unit; and a headword retrieval display controlling unit which performs control to cause description contents of the candidate headword specified by the candidate headword specifying unit to be retrieved from the dictionary data stored in the dictionary storage unit, and to be then displayed, when the candidate headword is specified by the candidate headword specifying unit.

7. The portable device according to claim 1, further comprising a dictionary data updating storage unit which updates and stores the dictionary data received by the dictionary data receiving unit and the dictionary data stored in the dictionary storage unit.

A dictionary server connected to a portable device via a communication network, the dictionary server comprising: a storage device which stores headwords and description contents of the headwords in association with each other, respectively; a net dictionary retrieving unit which retrieves, from the storage device, a headword corresponding to a retrieval object word received from the portable device via the communication network; a retrieved-headword-contents transmitting unit which reads out description contents corresponding to the retrieved headword and transmits the read description contents to the portable device; and a net dictionary data transmitting unit which transmits, to the portable device, dictionary data comprising a headword corresponding to the retrieval object word in response to an instruction from the portable device, after the read description contents are transmitted to the portable device by the retrieved-headword-contents transmitting unit.

9. The dictionary server according to claim 8, further comprising a dictionary data accounting unit which charges the portable device for an expense which varies in accordance with the dictionary data transmitted by the net dictionary data transmitting unit.

10. The dictionary server according to claim 8, further comprising a net retrieval accounting unit which charges the portable device for an expense which varies in accordance with the description contents transmitted by the retrieved-headword-contents transmitting unit.

The dictionary server according to claim 8, which further comprises a dictionary price storage unit which stores prices of a plurality of kinds of dictionary data stored in the dictionary storage unit, and wherein the dictionary data accounting unit reduces the expense of the transmitted dictionary data based on the price of dictionary data of the portable device which is stored in the dictionary price storage device, and charges the portable device for the reduced expense, when an instruction for updating the dictionary data is given from the portable device.

The dictionary server according to claim 9, wherein the dictionary data accounting unit reduces the expense of the transmitted dictionary data based on a past charged amount for which the portable device is charged by the net retrieval accounting unit, and then charges the portable device for the reduced expense.

A recording medium where a terminal processing program is recorded, the terminal processing program for use in controlling a computer of a portable device connected via a communication network to a dictionary server comprising a net dictionary storage unit which stores headwords and description contents of the headwords as dictionary data in association with each other, respectively, the terminal processing program being readable by a computer, and enabling the computer to function as the following units: a dictionary storage unit which stores headwords and description contents of the headwords as dictionary data in association with each other, respectively; an input unit which inputs a retrieval object word; a net dictionary retrieval requesting unit which determines whether a headword corresponding to the retrieval object word input by the input unit is stored in the dictionary storage unit or not, the net dictionary retrieval requesting unit causing the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word and the description contents of the headword, which are stored in association with each other in the dictionary storage unit, to be displayed, when determining that the headword is stored in the dictionary storage unit, the net dictionary retrieval requesting unit transmitting the retrieval object word to the dictionary server and making a retrieval request to the dictionary server to retrieve a headword corresponding to the retrieval object word, when determining that the headword corresponding to the retrieval object word is not stored in the dictionary storage device; and a net dictionary retrieval information receiving unit which receives retrieval information regarding the headword in dictionary data comprising the retrieved headword corresponding to the retrieval object word from the dictionary server, after the retrieval request is made to the dictionary server by the net dictionary retrieval information receiving unit; a net dictionary retrieval information display controlling unit which performs control to cause the retrieval information received by the net dictionary retrieval information receiving unit to be displayed; a reception instruction unit which gives an instruction for instructing the portable device to receive new dictionary data from the dictionary server in response to a user's operation, after the retrieval information is caused by the net dictionary retrieval information display controlling unit to be displayed; and a dictionary data receiving unit which receives from the dictionary server the dictionary data comprising the retrieved headword corresponding to the retrieval object word in response to the instruction from the reception instruction unit.

A recording medium where a server processing program for use in controlling a computer of a dictionary server connected to a portable device via a communication network, the server processing program being readable by a computer, and enabling the computer to function as the following units: a storage device which stores headwords and description contents of the headwords in association with each other, respectively; a net dictionary retrieving unit which retrieves, from the storage device, a headword corresponding to a retrieval object word received from the portable device via the communication network; a retrieved-headword-contents transmitting unit which reads out description contents corresponding to the retrieved headword and transmits the read description contents to the portable device; and a net dictionary data transmitting unit which transmits, to the portable device, dictionary data comprising a headword corresponding to the retrieval object word in response to an instruction from the portable device, after the read description contents are transmitted to the portable device by the retrieved-headword-contents transmitting unit.
