Claims
- 1. An educational toy to stimulate the development of a child's mind comprising:an object having six sides, four or more sides of the object having a picture thereon, the object adapted for lateral movement and rotational manipulation by the child on a substantially horizontal surface to allow the child to laterally move the object to arbitrary child-defined locations on the substantially horizontal surface and turn the object to select different sides of the object to face upwardly; one or more sensors capable of sensing the object at the arbitrary child-defined locations on the substantially horizontal surface to facilitate determination of which of the six sides faces upwardly; a speaker to output audio outputs; and a plurality of first audio outputs designed to stimulate the development of the child's mind, wherein in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly, the speaker outputs one of the first audio outputs depending on the side of the object sensed to face upwardly by the one or more sensors.
- 2. An educational toy as in claim 1, further comprising a plurality of second audio outputs, wherein the speaker outputs one of the second audio outputs to prompt the child to turn the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly.
- 3. An educational toy as in claim 2, wherein the first audio output output by the speaker in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly in response to one of the second audio outputs corresponds to positive feedback.
- 4. An educational toy as in claim 2, wherein the first audio output output by the speaker in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly in response to one of the second audio outputs corresponds to negative feedback.
- 5. An educational toy as in claim 1, wherein the first audio output output by the speaker in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly corresponds to the picture on the side of the object facing upwardly.
- 6. An educational toy as in claim 1, further comprising a portable memory reader associated with the toy capable of reading data from a portable memory inserted into the reader by the child or a person supervising the child, the data used to generate an audio output via the speakers.
- 7. An educational toy for teaching letters of an alphabet comprising:an object having six sides, four or more sides of the object having a letter thereon, the object adapted for lateral movement and rotational manipulation by the child on a substantially horizontal surface to allow the child to laterally move the object to arbitrary child-defined locations on the substantially horizontal surface and turn the object to select different sides of the object to face upwardly; one or more sensors capable of sensing the object at the arbitrary child-defined locations on the substantially horizontal surface to facilitate determination of which of the six sides faces upwardly; a speaker to output audio outputs; and a plurality of first audio outputs designed to stimulate the development of the child's mind, wherein in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly, the speaker outputs one of the first audio outputs depending on the side of the object sensed to face upwardly by the one or more sensors.
- 8. An educational toy as in claim 7, further comprising a plurality of second audio outputs, wherein the speaker outputs one of the second audio outputs to prompt the child to turn the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly.
- 9. An educational toy as in claim 8, wherein the first audio output output by the speaker in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly in response to one of the second audio outputs corresponds to positive feedback.
- 10. An educational toy as in claim 8, wherein the first audio output output by the speaker in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly in response to one of the second audio outputs corresponds to negative feedback.
- 11. An educational toy as in claim 7, wherein the first audio output output by the speaker in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly corresponds to the letter on the side of the object facing upwardly.
- 12. An educational toy as in claim 7, further comprising a portable memory reader associated with the toy capable of reading data from a portable memory inserted into the reader by the child or a person supervising the child, the data used to generate an audio output via the speakers.
- 13. An educational toy to stimulate the development of a child's mind comprising:an object having six sides, four or more sides of the object having educational matter thereon, the object adapted for lateral movement and rotational manipulation by the child on a substantially horizontal surface to allow the child to laterally move the object to arbitrary child-defined locations on the substantially horizontal surface and turn the object to select different sides of the object to face upwardly; one or more sensors capable of sensing the object at the arbitrary child-defined locations on the substantially horizontal surface to facilitate determination of which of the six sides faces upwardly; a speaker to output audio outputs; and a plurality of first audio outputs designed to stimulate the development of the child's mind, wherein in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly, the speaker outputs one of the first audio outputs depending on the side of the object sensed to face upwardly by the one or more sensors.
- 14. An educational toy as in claim 13, further comprising a plurality of second audio outputs, wherein the speaker outputs one of the second audio outputs to prompt the child to turn the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly.
- 15. An educational toy as in claim 14, wherein the first audio output output by the speaker in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly in response to one of the second audio outputs corresponds to positive feedback.
- 16. An educational toy as in claim 14, wherein the first audio output output by the speaker in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly in response to one of the second audio outputs corresponds to negative feedback.
- 17. An educational toy as in claim 13, wherein the first audio output output by the speaker in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly corresponds to the educational matter on the side of the object facing upwardly.
- 18. An educational toy as in claim 13, further comprising a portable memory reader associated with the toy capable of reading data from a portable memory inserted into the reader by the child or a person supervising the child, the data used to generate an audio output via the speakers.
- 19. An educational toy for stimulating the development of a child's mind comprising:an object having six sides, the object adapted for lateral movement and rotational manipulation by a child on a substantially horizontal surface to allow the child to laterally move the object to arbitrary child-defined locations on the substantially horizontal surface and turn the object to select different sides of the object to face upwardly; one or more sensors capable of sensing the object at the arbitrary child-defined locations on the substantially horizontal surface to facilitate determination of which of the plurality of sides faces upwardly; a speaker for producing the plurality of audio outputs designed to stimulate the development of the child's mind; and a portable memory reader associated with the toy capable of reading data from a portable memory inserted into the reader by the child or a person supervising the child, the data used to generate a plurality of first audio outputs to be output by the speaker.
- 20. An educational toy as in claim 19, wherein in response to the child turning the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly, the speaker outputs one of the first audio outputs depending on the side of the object sensed to face upwardly by the one or more sensors.
- 21. An educational toy as in claim 19, wherein the data is also used to generate a plurality of second audio outputs, wherein the speaker outputs one of the second audio outputs to prompt the child to turn the object to select one of sides of the object to face upwardly.
- 22. A portable memory to add educational software to an electronic educational toy by a child or a person supervising the child, the educational software designed to stimulate the development of the child's mind, the portable memory comprising:a portable memory housing designed to be compatible with and inserted into a portable memory receiving device associated with the electronic toy by the user thereof a memory medium contained in the portable memory housing, the memory medium storing: data for producing a plurality of audio outputs from a speaker for an object having six sides, four or more sides of the object having educational matter thereon designed to stimulate the development of the child's mind, the object adapted for lateral movement and rotational manipulation by a child on a substantially horizontal surface to allow the child to laterally move the object to arbitrary child-defined locations on the substantially horizontal surface and turn the object to select different sides of the object to face upwardly.
