Claims
- 1. An endoscope apparatus comprising:
- a handle assembly comprising a housing and at least first and second manually-actuatable switch means;
- a tube having a distal end and a proximal end, with said proximal end fixed to said handle assembly and extending away from said housing;
- an objective lens unit mounted within and fixed to said tube at the distal end thereof;
- a solid state imaging device mounted within and movable along said tube;
- a zoom lens mounted within and movable along said tube, said zoom lens being disposed between said objective lens unit and said imaging device;
- first bi-directional electromechanical means for moving said zoom lens along said tube toward or away from said objective lens unit, said first electromechanical means comprising (a) a first reversible electrical motor having an output shaft, and (b) first motion-transmitting means coupling said output shaft of said first motor to said zoom lens;
- means connecting said first switch means in selectively operable relation with said first reversible electrical motor, whereby actuating said first switch means energizes said first motor and thereby causes movement of said zoom lens along said tube according to the mode of energization of said first motor;
- second bi-directional electromechanical means for moving said imaging device along said tube toward or away from said objective lens unit and said zoom lens, said second electromechanical means comprising (a) a second reversible electrical motor having an output shaft, and (b) second motion-transmitting means coupling the output shaft of said second motor to said imaging device;
- means connecting said second switch means in selectively operable relation with said second reversible electrical motor, whereby actuating said second switch means energizes said second motor and thereby causes movement of said imaging device along said tube according to the mode of energization of said second motor; and
- control means connected to said first and second motors, said control means comprising a computer that is programmed to execute a reset routine that comprises (a) initiating operation of said first and second motors and operating said first and second motors so as to cause said zoom lens and said imaging device to move in a predetermined direction to predetermined limit positions, (b) terminating operation of said first and second motors; (c) initiating operation of said first motor and operating said first motor so as to move said zoom lens from its predetermined limit position to a predetermined startup position; (d) terminating operation of said first motor; (e) initiating operation of said second motor and operating said second motor so as to move said imaging device from its predetermined limit position to a predetermined startup position; and (f) terminating operation of said second motor when said imaging device is in its said predetermined startup position.
- 2. An endoscope according to claim 1 wherein said first and second motors are carried by said handle.
- 3. An endoscope according to claim 1 wherein said imaging device produces an output image signal representative of the image transmitted to said imaging device by said objective lens unit and said zoom lens, and further including display means for presenting a video image of the image passed to said imaging means by said objective lens unit and said zoom lens unit.
- 4. An endoscope comprising:
- a handle assembly comprising a handle and first, second, third, and fourth manually-actuatable switch means carried by said handle, each of said switches having an actuating member on said handle;
- a tube having a distal end and a proximal end with said proximal end anchored to said handle assembly;
- an objective lens unit mounted within and fixed to the distal end of said tube;
- a solid state imaging device mounted within and movable along said tube toward and away from said objective lens unit;
- a zoom lens mounted within and movable along said tube; said zoom lens being disposed between said objective lens unit and said imaging device;
- first bi-directional electromechanical means for moving said zoom lens along said tube toward or away from said objective lens unit, said first electromechanical means comprising (a) a first reversible electrical motor having an output shaft and (b) first motion-conversion means coupling said output shaft of said first motor to said zoom lens so that rotation of said output shaft will cause movement of said zoom lens lengthwise of said tube toward or away from said objective lens unit according to the direction of rotation of said output shaft;
- means coupling said first and second switch means in operable relation with said first reversible electrical motor, whereby moving the actuating member of said first switch means energizes said first motor so as to cause movement of said zoom lens toward said objective lens unit and moving the actuating member of said second switch means energizes said first motor so as to cause movement of said zoom lens away from said objective lens unit;
- second bi-directional electromechanical means for moving said imaging device along said tube toward or away from said objective lens unit and said zoom lens, said second electromechanical means comprising (a) a second reversible electrical motor having an output shaft and (b) second motion-conversion means coupling the output shaft of said second electrical motor to said imaging device so that rotation of the output shaft of said second motor will cause movement of said imaging device toward or away from said objective lens unit and said zoom lens according to the direction of rotation of said output shaft;
- means coupling said third and fourth switch means in operable relation with said second reversible electrical motor, whereby moving the actuating member of said third switch means energizes said second motor so as to cause movement of said imaging device toward said objective lens unit and said zoom lens and moving the actuating member of said fourth switch means energizes said second motor so as to cause movement of said imaging device away from said objective lens unit and said zoom lens;
- first and second sensing means for sensing the extent and direction of movement of said zoom lens and said imaging device lengthwise of said tube and for producing first and second output signals respectively indicative of the extent and direction of movement of said zoom lens and said imaging device respectively lengthwise of said tube; and
- control means responsive to said first and second output signals for controlling the relative positions of said zoom lens and said imaging device so that at each position of said zoom lens said imaging device is positioned at the focal plane of said zoom lens, whereby the image seen by said objective lens and projected by said zoom lens is in focus at the image-receiving surface of said imaging device.
- 5. An endoscope according to claim 4 wherein said imaging device produces an output image signal representative of the image transmitted to said imaging device by said objective lens unit and said zoom lens, and further including display means for presenting a video image of the image passed to said imaging means by said objective lens unit and said zoom lens unit.
- 6. An endoscope comprising:
- a handle assembly comprising a handle and first, second, third, and fourth manually-operable switch means carried by said handle, each of said switches having an actuating member;
- a tube having a distal end and a proximal end with said proximal end anchored to said handle assembly;
- an objective lens unit mounted within and fixed to the distal end of said tube;
- a solid state imaging device mounted within and movable along said tube toward and away from said objective lens unit;
- a zoom lens mounted within and movable along said tube; said zoom lens being disposed between said objective lens unit and said imaging device;
- first bi-directional electromechanical means for moving said zoom lens along said tube toward or away from said objective lens unit, said first electromechanical means comprising (a) a first reversible electrical motor having an output shaft and (b) first motion-conversion means coupling said output shaft of said first motor to said zoom lens so that rotation of said output shaft will cause movement of said zoom lens toward or away from said objective lens unit according to the direction of rotation of said output shaft;
- means coupling said first and second switch means in controlling relation with said first reversible electrical motor, whereby moving the actuating member of said first switch means energizes said first motor so as to cause movement of said zoom lens toward said objective lens unit and moving the actuating member of said second switch means energizes said first motor so as to cause movement of said zoom lens away from said objective lens unit;
- second bi-directional electromechanical means for moving said imaging device along said tube toward or away from said objective lens unit and said zoom lens, said second electromechanical means comprising (a) a second reversible electrical motor having an output shaft and (b) second motion-conversion means coupling the output shaft of said second electrical motor to said imaging device so that rotation of the output shaft of said second motor will cause movement of said imaging device toward or away from said objective lens unit and said zoom lens according to the direction of rotation of said output shaft;
- means coupling said third and fourth switch means in controlling relation with said second reversible electrical motor, whereby moving the actuating member of said third switch means energizes said second motor so as to cause movement of said imaging device toward said objective lens unit and said zoom lens and moving the actuating member of said fourth switch means energizes said second motor so as to cause movement of said imaging device away from said objective lens unit and said zoom lens;
- first pulse generating means responsive to operation of said first motor for generating first signal pulses representative of the direction and extent of movement of said imaging device by operation of said first motor;
- second pulse generating means responsive to operation of said second motor for generating second signal pulses representative of the direction and extent of movement of said zoom lens by operation of said second motor;
- control means responsive to said first and second signal pulses for controlling the relative positions of said zoom lens and said imaging device so that at each position of said zoom lens said imaging device is positioned at the focal plane of said zoom lens, whereby the image seen by said objective lens and projected by said zoom lens is in focus at the image-receiving surface of said imaging device, said control means comprising an electronic look-up table containing data identifying the relative positions of said zoom lens and said imaging device that are required in order to maintain the image of any object seen by said objective lens unit in focus on the image receiving surface of said imaging device at various settings of said zoom lens for a given object distance, and electronic means responsive to said first and second signal pulses for accessing the data in said lookup table and for generating motor control signals in accordance with the accessed data, and means for applying said motor control signals to said first and second motors.
- 7. An endoscope according to claim 6 wherein said electronic means comprises an object distance counter responsive to said first signal pulses, a focus position counter responsive to said second signal pulses, a zoom position counter, an input circuit for said zoom position counter responsive to operation of said first switch means, means for comparing the signal outputs of said focus position counter and said zoom position counter and producing a data signal output in response to the comparison of said signal outputs, and means responsive to said data signal output for accessing the data in said lookup table and for generating said motor control signals in accordance with the accessed data.
- 8. An endoscope according to claim 7 wherein said imaging device produces an output image signal representative of the image transmitted to said imaging device by said objective lens unit and said zoom lens, and further including display means for presenting a video image of the image passed to said imaging means by said objective lens unit and said zoom lens unit.
- 9. An endoscope according to claim 8 wherein said control means includes display control means responsive to said output image signal of said imaging device for causing said display means to generate a video image representative of the position of at least said zoom lens or said imaging device within said tube.
- 10. An endoscope according to claim 8 wherein said control means includes display control means responsive to said output image signal of said imaging device for causing said display means to generate a video image representative of the positions of both said zoom lens and said imaging device within said tube.
- 11. An endoscope according to claim 10 wherein said zoom lens is movable between a first minimum position and a second maximum position within said tube, and said display control means is adapted to cause said display means to generate a first image representative of said minimum position of said zoom lens and a second image representative of said maximum position of said zoom lens.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein said display control means is adapted to cause said display means to generate an additional image representative of the instantaneous position of said zoom lens.
- 13. An endoscope according to claim 10 wherein said imaging device is movable between a first minimum position and a second maximum position within said tube, and said display control means is adapted to cause said display means to generate a first image representative of said minimum position of said imaging device and a second image representative of said maximum position of said imaging device.
- 14. Apparatus according to claim 13 wherein said display control means is adapted to cause said display means to generate an additional image representative of the instantaneous position of said imaging device.
- 15. An endoscope according to claim 6 wherein said imaging device produces an output image signal representative of the image transmitted to said imaging device by said objective lens unit and said zoom lens, and further including display means for presenting a video image of the image passed to said imaging means by said objective lens unit and said zoom lens unit.
- 16. An endoscope according to claim 15 wherein said control means includes display control means responsive to said output image signal of said imaging device for causing said display means to generate a video image representative of the position of at least said zoom lens or said imaging device within said tube.
- 17. An endoscope according to claim 16 wherein said zoom lens is movable between a first minimum position and a second maximum position within said tube, and said display control means is adapted to cause said display means to generate a first image representative of said minimum position of said zoom lens and a second image representative of said maximum position of said zoom lens.
- 18. Apparatus according to claim 17 wherein said display control means is adapted to cause said display means to generate an additional image representative of the instantaneous position of said zoom lens.
- 19. An endoscope according to claim 16 wherein said imaging device is movable between a first minimum position and a second maximum position within said tube, and said display control means is adapted to cause said display means to generate a first image representative of said minimum position of said imaging device and a second image representative of said maximum position of said imaging device.
- 20. Apparatus according to claim 19 wherein said display control means is adapted to cause said display means to generate an additional image representative of the instantaneous position of said imaging device.
- 21. An endoscope according to claim 15 wherein said control means includes display control means responsive to said output image signal of said imaging device for causing said display means to generate a video image representative of the positions of both said zoom lens and said imaging device within said tube.
