Claims
- 1. An electronic language translator comprising:
- memory means having digital data stored therein including digital speech data from which synthesized speech as words in more than one human language may be derived:
- operator input means for receiving an operator input indicative of a request in a first human language for a particular word or phrase in a second human language, said operator input means comprises a keyboard having a plurality of individual keys, including numbered keys representative of numbers "0" through "9", which are manually actuatable in correspondence to a predetermined code for selectively indicating a request in said first human language for a particular word or phrase in said second human language, said predetermined code derivable from said digital speech data stored in said memory means comprises respective numbers corresponding to particular words or phrases;
- control means responsive to the operator input received by said operator input means for selectively accessing digital speech data from said memory means corresponding to the indicated request for a particular word or phrase in said second human language;
- speech synthesizer means operably associated with said memory means and said control means for receiving selected digital speech data from said memory means in response to the accessing thereof by said control means to generate analog audio signals representative of human speech in said second human language; and
- audio means coupled to said speech synthesizer means for converting said analog audio signals generated thereby into audible human speech for pronouncing said particular word or phrase in said second human language;
- wherein the selective actuation of at least one numbered key of said keyboard by the operator as an operator input indicating a request for a particular word or phrase in said second human language.
- 2. An electronic language translator comprising:
- memory means having digital data stored therein including digital speech data from which synthesized speech as words in more than one human language may be derived, said memory means has coded firmware stored therein including a roster of words or phrases in said second human language each identified by a particular code number;
- operator input means for receiving an operator input indicative of a request in a first human language for a particular word or phrase in a second human language;
- control means responsive to the operator input received by said operator input means for selectively accessing digital speech data from said memory means corresponding to the indicated request for a particular word or phrase in said second human language;
- speech synthesizer means operably associated with said memory means and said control means for receiving selected digital speech data from said memory means in response to the accessing thereof by said control means to generate analog audio signals representative of human speech in said second human language; and
- audio means coupled to said speech synthesizer means for converting said analog audio signals generated thereby into audible human speech for pronouncing said particular word or phrase in said second human language;
- wherein said memory means being responsive to an operator input from said operator input means for receiving signals therefrom indicative of a particular code number for selecting the one of said plurality of words or phrases corresponding to the code number received by said memory means from said operator input means such that said audio means is effective to provide audible human speech for pronouncing said particular word or phrase in said scond human language corresponding to the particular word or phrase identified by the code number received as an operator input by said operator input means.
- 3. An electronic language translator comprising:
- memory means having digital data stored therein including digital speech data from which synthesized speech as words in more than one human language may be derived, wherein said memory means has digital speech data stored therein from which respective lists of words in a plurality of categories may be derived in more than one human language, each category or words including a plurality of words having a common denominator relating all of the words grouped in the same category in some manner intended to facilitate comprehension of such words in more than one human language;
- operator input means for receiving an operator input indicative of a request in a first human language for a particular word or phrase in a second human language;
- control means responsive to the operator input received by said operator input means for selectively acessing digital speech data from said memory means corresponding to the indicated request for a particular word or phrase in said second human language;
- speech synthesizer means operably associated with said memory means and said control means for receiving selected digital speech data from said memory means in response to the accessing thereof by said control means to generate analog audio signals representative of human speech in said second human language;
- audio means coupled to said speech synthesizer means for converting said analog audio signals generated thereby into audible human speech for pronouncing said particular word or phrase in said second human language; and
- display means operably associated with said control means and responsive to a selective operator input received by said operator input means for alternately displaying each word of a selected list of words included in one categroy in first and second human languages; and
- wherein said speech synthesizer means being responsive to said control means for generating analog audio signals after each sequence of alternate displays of a word in said selected list of words included in said one categroy in said first and second human languages representative of human speech corresponding to the word in said second human language.
- 4. An electronic language translator comprising:
- memory means having digital data stored therein including digital speech data from which synthesized speech as words in more than one human language may be derived;
- operator input means for receiving an operator input indicative of a request in a first human language for a particular word or phrase in a second human language, said operator input means comprises a plurality of individual switches for receiving an operator input indicative of a request in said first human language for a particular word or phrase in said second human language, said plurality of switches including a linking switch for connecting a particular word or phrase requested by a previous operator input to a new particular word or phrase requested by a subsequent operator input upon actuation by the operator to define a compound request in said first human language for linked words and/or phrases in said second human language;
- control means responsive to the operator input received by said operator input means for selectively accessing digital speech data from said memory means corresponding to the indicated request for a particular word or phrase in said second human language;
- speech synthesizer means operably associated with said memory means and said control means for receiving selected digital speech data from said memory means in response to the accessing thereof by said control means to generate analog audio signals representative of human speech in said second human language; and
- audio means coupled to said speech synthesizer means for converting said analog audio signals generated thereby into audible human speech for pronouncing said particular word or phrase in said second human language.
- 5. An electronic language translator as set forth in any of claims 1, 2 or 3, further including display means coupled to said control means for displaying said particular word or phrase corresponding to the request from the operator as received by said operator input means, the particular word or phrase at least being displayed in said second human language.
- 6. An electronic language translator as set forth in claim 5, wherein said control means comprises a microprocessor.
