- 2. A mechanically operated lock assembly for association with an electronically controlled lock operating unit, said lock assembly comprising, in combination, a housing adapted to receive said lock assembly and to be fixed with respect to an element to be secured against movement by said assembly, a bolt assembly received in said housing for reciprocable movement between extended and withdrawn positions of use for selective engagement and disengagement with an associated portion of a lockable mechanism, means normally urging said bolt to an extended position, bolt movement locking means carried by a portion of said bolt and having a portion movable between a locked position of engagement with a part of said housing and an unlocked position permitting reciprocating movement of said bolt, at least one lock release unit having a cam portion adapted to engage said bolt movement locking means, said lock release unit being mounted for movement between a released position wherein said cam portion engages said bolt movement locking means and a locked position wherein said cam portion is disengaged from said movement locking means, means biasing said lock release unit toward the released position thereof, movable lock release retainer means cooperating with said lock release unit to retain said release unit in the locked position thereof in one position of said retainer means and to permit free movement of said release unit to the unlocked position thereof in another position of said retainer means, and means adapted to form an operative connection between said release means and said electronically controlled operating unit.
- 3. A lock assembly as defined in claim 2 wherein said bolt assembly comprises a bolt body portion and a bolt nose portion, said bolt nose and said bolt body being secured together by a pivotable connection, and movable between extended and withdrawn positions, means biasing said bolt nose to said withdrawn position, said withdrawn position of said bolt nose permitting said bolt nose to act as a cam for moving said bolt to its withdrawn position when said secured element is moved relative to said associated portion of said lockable mechanism.
- 4. A lock assembly as defined in claim 2 wherein said bolt movement locking means is normally biased towards said locked position of engagement with said part of said housing.
- 5. A lock assembly as defined in claim 2 wherein at least one lock release unit is normally biased toward the released position thereof.
- 6. A lock assembly as defined in claim 2 which further includes a second lock release unit which includes a cam portion adapted to engage said bolt movement locking means and which is also mounted for movement between a released position wherein said cam portion engages said bolt movement locking means and a locked position wherein said cam portion is disengaged from said bolt movement locking means, said second lock release unit including means thereon which are engageable with a portion of said bolt assembly when said second release unit is in the released position thereof, said engageable means being adapted, upon movement of said bolt assembly toward said withdrawn position thereof, to move said second lock release to the released position thereof.
- 7. A lock assembly as defined in claim 3 wherein said at least one lock release unit and said second lock release unit are constructed and arranged so that said engageable means on the second lock release unit cannot be positioned for said engagement thereof with said of said portion of said bolt unless said at least one lock release unit is in the locked position thereof.
- 8. A lock assembly as defined in claim 7 wherein said first and second lock release means each includes a slot, and wherein a ferrule is provided which is movable between positions of engagement in one or the other of said slots, said ferrule being movable in one direction by said electronically controlled operating unit and being urged in the other direction by biasing means associated therewith.
- 9. An electronically controlled lock assembly, said assembly including a housing adapted to be affixed to a relatively movable secured member, a bolt carrier forming a part of said housing, and a reciprocable bolt assembly received therein, said bolt assembly including a bolt body and a bolt nose portion pivotally affixed to said body and biased into an extended position by resilient means forming a part of said bolt assembly, a bolt position lock assembly received within a part of said bolt assembly, said position lock assembly including a locking post portion and being mounted for movement between locked and unlocked positions with respect to said bolt carrier, means biasing said bolt position lock assembly into the locked position thereof, said bolt carrier including at least one slot for receiving said locking post portion, first and second bolt lock release units associated with said bolt carrier, and each including cam surfaces forcing respective parts thereof, said bolt lock release units each being movable between an extended position wherein said cam surface thereof engages said bolt position wherein said position lock is permitted to move to a locked position, means on said first lock release unit biasing said unit to an unlocked position, and means on said second lock release for engaging a portion of said bolt during reciprocating movement thereof, and release retaining means movable between a first position wherein said first lock release is held in said withdrawn position and a second position wherein said lock release is in said extended position, said lock release bieng arranged so as to permit said first lock release to move to the extended position to permit said bolt movement lock to be released, and electrically actuated means operatively associated with said release retaining means to control the movement thereof.
- 10. A lock assembly as defined in claim 9 wherein said position lock assembly also serves to engage said bolt nose portion when said position lock is in said lock position, said position lock assembly being further movable to a fully withdrawn position which permits movement of said bolt nose so that a surface thereof is substantially inclined with respect to the operating plane of said bolt assembly.
