Claims
- 1. An electronic brake controller for actuating electric wheel brakes of a towed vehicle, the towed vehicle being associated with a towing vehicle having a set of wheel brakes, the electronic brake controller comprising:
- a sensor for producing an automatic brake control signal which is representative of the desired automatic braking of the towed vehicle;
- a controller housing;
- a remote housing separable from said controller housing, said remote housing adapted to be held in one hand of a vehicle operator;
- a manual brake control signal generator carried by said remote housing for producing a manual brake control signal representative of the desired manual braking of the towed vehicle, said control signal generator operable by the one hand of the vehicle operator while holding said remote housing; and
- a control device mounted within said controller housing, said control device coupled to receive both said automatic and manual brake signals and responsive to one of said automatic and manual brake control signals for generating an output signal for actuating the electric wheel brakes of the towed vehicle.
- 2. An electronic brake controller for actuating electric wheel brakes of a towed vehicle, the towed vehicle being associated with a towing vehicle having a set of wheel brakes, the electronic brake controller comprising:
- a controller housing;
- a control device responsive to a brake control signal for generating an output signal for actuating the electric wheel brakes of the towed vehicle, said control device disposed within said controller housing;
- a remote housing separable from said controller housing, said remote housing adapted to be held in one hand of a vehicle operator; and
- a manual brake control signal generator carried by said remote housing, said manual brake control signal generator coupled to said control device and operable by the one hand of the vehicle operator while holding said remote housing to produce a manual brake control signal representative of the desired braking of the towed vehicle, said control device being responsive to said manual brake control to generate said output signal.
- 3. An electronic brake controller according to claim 2 wherein said control device further includes a sensor for producing an automatic brake control signal upon actuation of the towed vehicle brakes, said control device being responsive to said automatic brake control signal to generate said output signal, said control device being further responsive to receiving said manual brake control signal while simultaneously receiving said automatic brake control signal to generate an output signal in response to said manual brake control signal.
- 4. An electronic brake controller according to claim 3 wherein said manual brake signal generator is removablely coupled to said control device, said control device responsive to said automatic brake control signal to generate said output signal when said manual brake signal generator is removed.
- 5. An electronic brake controller according to claim 4 further including an enabling device which generates a trigger signal upon activation of the towing vehicle brakes, said control device being responsive to said trigger signal and said automatic brake control signal to generate an output signal.
- 6. An electronic brake controller according to claim 5 wherein said remote housing carries a manual actuator button which is coupled to said manual brake signal generator, said manual brake signal generator being responsive to displacement of said manual actuator button by the vehicle operator to generate said manual brake control signal, said manual brake control signal having a magnitude which is proportional to the displacement of said manual actuator button.
- 7. An electronic brake controller for actuating electric wheel brakes of a towed vehicle, the towed vehicle being associated with a towing vehicle having a set of wheel brakes, the electronic brake controller comprising:
- a controller housing;
- a control device responsive to a brake control signal for generating an output signal for actuating the electric wheel brakes of the towed vehicle, said control device disposed within said controller housing;
- a sensor included in said control device, said sensor operative to produce an automatic brake control signal upon actuation of the towed vehicle brakes;
- a remote housing separate from said controller housing;
- an operator actuated first manual brake control signal generator carried by said remote housing, said first manual brake control signal generator coupled to said control device and operative by a vehicle operator to produce a first manual brake control signal representative of the desired braking of the towed vehicle; and a second manual brake signal generator carried by said controller housing, said second manual brake signal generator being coupled to said control device and operative by the vehicle operator to generate a second manual brake control signal representative of the desired braking of the towed vehicle, said control device being responsive to receiving one of said first and second manual brake control signals while simultaneously receiving said automatic brake control signal to generate an output signal in response to said one of said first and second manual brake control signals.
- 8. An electronic brake controller according to claim 7 wherein said first manual brake signal generator is removablely coupled to said control device, said control device responsive to one of said automatic brake control signal and said second manual brake control signal to generate said output signal when said first manual brake signal generator is removed.
- 9. An electronic brake controller according to claim 8 further including an enabling device which generates a trigger signal upon activation of the towing vehicle brakes, said control device being responsive to said trigger signal and said automatic brake control signal to generate an output signal.
- 10. An electronic brake controller according to claim 9 wherein said remote housing carries a first manual actuator button which is coupled to said first manual brake signal generator, said first manual brake signal generator being responsive to displacement of said first manual actuator button by the vehicle operator to generate said first manual brake control signal, said first manual brake control signal having a magnitude which is proportional to the displacement of said first manual actuator button.
- 11. An electronic brake controller according to claim 10 wherein said controller housing carries a second manual actuator button which is coupled to said second manual brake signal generator, said second manual brake signal generator being responsive to displacement of said second manual actuator button by the vehicle operator to generate said second manual brake control signal, said second manual brake control signal having a magnitude which is proportional to the displacement of said second manual actuator button.
- 12. An electronic brake controller for actuating electric wheel brakes of a towed vehicle, the towed vehicle being associated with a towing vehicle having a set of wheel brakes, the electronic brake controller comprising:
- a controller housing;
- a control device responsive to a brake control signal for generating an output signal for actuating the electric wheel brakes of the towed vehicle, said control device disposed within said controller housing;
- a remote housing separate from said controller housing;
- an operator actuated first manual brake control signal generator carried by said remote housing, said first manual brake control signal generator coupled to said control device and operative by vehicle operator to produce a first manual brake control signal representative of the desired braking of the towed vehicle;
- a second manual brake signal generator carried by said controller housing, said second manual brake signal generator being coupled to said control device and operative by the vehicle operator to generate a second manual brake control signal representative of the desired braking of the towed vehicle, said control device being responsive to one of said first and second manual brake control signals to generate said output signal.
- 13. An electronic brake controller according to claim 12 wherein said control device further includes a sensor for producing an automatic brake control signal upon actuation of the towed vehicle brakes, said control device being responsive to said automatic brake control signal to generate said output signal, said control device being further responsive to receiving one of said first and second manual brake control signals while simultaneously receiving said automatic brake control signal to generate an output signal in response to said one of said first and second manual brake control signals.
- 14. An electronic brake controller according to claim 15 wherein said first brake signal generator is removablely coupled to said control device, said control device responsive to one of said automatic brake control signal and said second manual brake control signal to generate said output signal when said first manual brake signal generator is removed.
- 15. An electronic brake controller according to claim 14 wherein said remote housing carries a first manual actuator button which is coupled to said first manual brake signal generator, said first manual brake signal generator being responsive to displacement of said first manual actuator button by the vehicle operator to generate said first manual brake control signal, said first manual brake control signal having a magnitude which is proportional to the displacement of said first manual actuator button.
- 16. An electronic brake controller according to claim 14 wherein said controller housing carries a second manual actuator button which is coupled to said second manual brake signal generator, said second manual brake signal generator being responsive to displacement of said second manual actuator button by the vehicle operator to generate said second manual brake control signal, said second manual brake control signal having a magnitude which is proportional to the displacement of said second manual actuator button.
